Storm Monroe THANK YOU! But, sadly, people have babies all-the-time before getting married or not at all. “Baby’s Daddy” or “Baby’s Mamma” is NOT a proud title to carry. Edit: what those titles mean is you had a hookup without protection and she refused to abort it thinking she was ‘financially set’ and doesn’t have to work.

Samin Alam did you not listen? With marriage you have the safety of legality of 50% ownership. The unmarried PARTNER may have legal liabilities just waiting to happen. In just one simple example, your girlfriend dies... and then YOU owe inheritance tax in her half, and that is IF no one else inherits her 50%. Yea, good luck with that....

Blue Newt can you not read ? I didn’t disagree with any of that . I am saying the failure rate in marriage is so high in this country it’s not really much of a safety valve anymore . Sure it’s likely cultural and generational but I live in reality. Your point only applies if the marriage works out , given that half don’t i wouldn’t hold it to a pedestal . Also I never said get into a property with a GF /BF. Each buy one , occupy one and rent out the other . In case something goes bad the other party has a fall back plan .

Short Answer: No Long Answer: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Happened to my brother. Was even engaged and the two of them sold their houses and bought an enormously expensive house together. One day, she said to my brother "Well, this just isn't going to work" and walked away. Listen to Dave. Rent or only one of you buy it but don't put both of you down on the mortgage until you are married.

NOTHING you can do to prevent the other party from destroying your property within the home. At least a divorce court can force a separation of assets.

Glad Dave didn't do that & attempted to explain what kind of fires can happen in your life when you do that so Law would understand. I get where Law is coming from because it's hard to think logically when your feeling are involved & your head is in the clouds. I once was about to date someone who said they where interested in me. They seemed fun to be around so I said yes. Then a while later I found out from a co-worker there was another person they where allready with. At 1st I didn't know what to think so I confronted them about it. They said they wished I had never found out about the other person they where with. I was truthful & told them that I didn't know what to think about that. I was really shocked as it was them who approached me about dating. I ended up talking to a trustworthy friend about it because I was feeling a lot of confusing emotions & I knew it was preventing me from thinking rationally. My friend said that it sounded like they where trying to use me as someone on the side & that they where bad for me. It was hard to take in at 1st but as I gave myself time to get my feeling out of the way, the more I realized how right they where. This person was a cheating two timer & because I felt in love I was unable to recognize the clear warning signs. I'm glad I got out before I got even more emotionally involved. This is why it's so important to talk to trustworthy people about big choices. Dave likly saved or at least warned Law from having a lot problems later down the road just as my friend saved me from a lot of pain from being in a bad relationship.

Yep, don’t do it. First hand experience, I bought a house with my ex thinking all was good and then 2 weeks after moving in she decides “we’re on different paths” and it’s all over. Had been together for 3 years, lived together for a year and traveled together as well. Was not a good experience and was easily avoidable, but I was an idiot. Turned into a huge costly legal mess to her and myself. Dave’s 110% right on this one.

Luckily I learned my lesson as a kid. Never enter big financial deals with someone you're not married to. I put my then gf on my phone plan, she took off and racked up a few hundred bucks in charges that I then had to pay for. When I had service suspended, she had her new guy pretend to be me on the phone to turn it back on and racked up a couple hundred more. Lesson learned.

He's not on the mortgage thank god but he did invest a large chunk of money into it so he's not going to sign it over to her without half the equity. She won't ever sell (lives there with her bf she cheated on my husband with) so I guess our kids will inherit half the property after we all die *shrug*. They were engaged at the time and planning a wedding. You never know. He never expected to be in that situation. And yet it happens all the time!! Blows my mind that my husbands friends all seem to the do the same thing, buy a house with their GFs because none of them are ready to get married yet. I want to smack them all.

It's more than half! You will spend half paying for lawyers yours and hers they will drag the thing out to because that will get them more money she wont care your paying them then if your luckey you will get half of what's left but not really because you will have to pay alimony or as it should be called allthemoney

Dave is looking at the “legal” remedies regarding the house in “divorce” vs “breaking up” with a girlfriend/boyfriend. In divorce, assets are divided LEGALLY.. For example, a judge can FORCE both of you to sell or allow one party to buy the other out during the divorce... If your girlfriend/boyfriend breaks up with you they still OWN the house with you. If she/he stops paying the mortgage you are STUCK either paying the ENTIRE mortgage yourself or letting the bank take it in foreclosure (mess up your credit).... Or your ex could refuse to agree to sell it AND refuse to buy you out.... OR your ex could move other people into the house.... and there is no legal remedy for you...

@@jamiekenleyuk marriage has nothing to do with religion in the eyes of the government. we're talking about the legal binding aspect. the government recognizes atheist marriages. what contract are you proposing?? Would a contract get you rights to social security retirement benefits? survivors? In this specific instance, how would the man possibly protect himself by buying a house with a GF? There's nothing legal that can force a future ex gf to sell the house. No one can take a home from anyone - not even in bankruptcy can you lose your home. ONLY in the instance of marriage/divorce can an asset be ordered to be split.

Oh boy.🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️ My father recently bought a home,(cali and valued at 500k) with a girlfriend who he barely knew a year. My dad is retired and has a decent retirement at 67. His younger gf of 54 makes really good money and they apparently both signed on the deed. My dad put 40k down, but has her paying tje mortgage. Her income is much more than his retirement. Tell me guys, who's more at risk in this situation if she decides to breakup with my dad and what's his best case scenario if it ever comes down to that??? OK two ways to sort this. The wedding will burn savings the 2 of them have saved for this house. Have a super cheap wedding aim for £7000-10000 with everything included. Small guest list, cheap venue, who cares. The wedding gifts should close to breakeven. Those men that are scared of their assets in marriage, just get a prenup before the marriage or don't get married unless you find someone who will sign it with you. Anyways then both parties have enough savings to get married and buy a house.

Unfortunately people have affairs and get divorced as well. I’ve known people to get married and then divorce within a year. Now you own a house with your ex wife and have to buy her out or sale the house. What difference does it make? One of them should by the house and live as roommates if they’re not ready

If they are not ready - then they keep courting until they are sure . Statistics show that if you live with someone before you married, your chances for divorce for are higher If " you" are having an affair then there's no communication in the marriage.

I got an uncle who got married and bought a house, got cheated on, lost half his stuff in the divorce including the house and now has to pay alimony. 5 years later, his cheating ex wife still lives in that house. So I suppose in a way, he’s still paying for the house he no longer lives in. I hardly ever see anyone in these videos talking about how common divorce is and how unfair the court systems are towards men. It makes perfect sense why some people would rather not get married these days. Dave almost makes it seem like once you get married, you’re suddenly in the clear. Believe me I wish that were the case.
