Roxanne Gordon If the car is properly maintained, didn’t have any stupid design/manufacturing defects, you’ve still got quite a lot of miles left on it: what’s the point of getting a new car if the old one is reliable and affordable to feed? Now, once the repairs start getting excessively expensive and it gets unreliable, then it’s time to trade it in or take to a junkyard, if you can’t quickly get a trade-in worth your time: if a car is truly spent (my first Saturn had about that many miles on it when I traded it in and got $100 for it, but it also had significant battle damage and used a quart of oil every 160 miles with rate increasing) then you’ve gotten sufficient value out of the price, if you don’t keep throwing good money after it’s too far gone. Meanwhile, you have to live with a house a lot more of the time, and 35 years a kitchen will often be falling apart, even if not outdated.

Wow. I didn't know 7/10 houses were living paycheck-to-paycheck. Like you said, people need to give up the facade/ego, and be secure in living how they should be with their money. It definitely takes a strong person to stop worrying about their self-image. I've learned this in various areas of life, but it always pays off to be "real". Thanks for the advice!
@monajayne77177 жыл бұрын
I'm living paycheck to paycheck and it's not because I'm concerned about my image. I have debt that I let my ex get me into (he was solely responsible for finances and wouldn't let me see what was getting paid when... I obviously should have left him long before I did). I'm paying daycare for two kids who aren't yet school aged. I'm a teacher. Oh, and my ex doesn't pay child support most of the time. Aside from my bills (gas, water, electric, rent, food, etc) I have a car payment and an audible membership. No internet. No Netflix. No cable. No tv. My kids only get a few gifts for the holidays. Yes, I know it will get better especially when the kids are in public school rather than daycare but right now unless I want to live in an unsafe neighborhood there is basically nothing I can do besides throw my tax return on debt every year.

We moved from Europe to Silicon Valley, never owned a car before because we had excellent public transportation system back home, but...California heh, had to buy a car. Let me tell you, we have the oldest car in the garage, a 2001 Toyota Camry, all bumped up, but it runs awesome and we bought it in CASH, for 3k! I would not change that for all the Teslas, Masseratis and whatnots that our neighbors are obsessing about and buying the latest models, it’s a debt for sure, even for the rich folks that live in the area. It’s crazy to us, the keeping up of social status with a stupid thing as the latest car...this man is right on the “money” here!

@lashandaeller48218 жыл бұрын
Or maybe he paid cash for it because he listens to Dave! Not every nice car has a payment! In a few years, we plan on paying cash for my dream Tahoe as well as paying our house off early. It is not the nicest house, but it will be our house and big enough to raise a family! We live in a very expensive city (Portland, OR) and people are just thankful to find a home! I never dreamed I could do such a thing! It is all because I stopped being scared of money and took control of it. I used to not even look at my credit card statements because I didn't want to see the balance. I would just pay the minimum and not look. I would not check my bank account for months at a time. I didn't know how much money I had and would charge stuff at the end of the month so I didn't have to look. I am ashamed to admit it, but it was true. This year, I had ENOUGH! My fiance and I make too good of money to be broke!!!!!! I will be paying off my last credit card in OCTOBER 2016! We paid off about $20K in 8 months!!! I cannot wait to start Baby Step 3 in November!! We are asking our family for help on Baby step 5 (college expenses), which they agreed to do. Our child's college is paid for and s/he is even born yet! It is thanks to Dave Ramsey that we have taken control of our money and are feel overjoyed that we will soon live like no one else!!

Most people spend about 5k on transportation. I have cheap rent, I pack my lunches, I make my own dinners when I drink cocktails, they are homemade. I buy in bulk. I only go out about once a month. I exercise but I don't go to the gym. I rarely buy breakfast. However, I want to be normal. :) I started later in my career and so I am just playing catch up to be normal. Hahaha, my husband and I both drive cars probably not worth more than 2,000 each and a house that's on the low end of the town we live in (most houses run 250,000- 1 million dollars) and we live in a house 100,000 less than the average house here... And my husband works at the same place as most the same people in this town work and he makes six figures... ⬅️ what trying to be debt free is like. I get looks when I pull up to my son's school from other moms in their 60,000 vans and SUVs. And here I am three kids in a small car worth no more than 2,000. I get people in the Walmart line making comments when I pull out my Dave Ramsey wallet and go though my envelopes to pay for house good separate from the food. Lastly my husband and I spent 350 dollars on our wedding including dress&rings and never been on a honeymoon or vacation. I bought 18,000 in debt into the marriage from student loans and my husband brought 40,000 with his credit cards and student loans that he had since 2000.

Dave, thanks for all of your advice. I'm in such a mess! My husband (whom I am separated from, not divorced from) decided he wasn't going to help me anymore with my expenses. I'm 74. Can't really get a job. Am looking into selling on eBay and Amazon. But my problem is that a cant pay my bills this month unless I go into my 4021k ( a little over 61000). Should I dip into the 401k or not pay my bills? I've purged all non essentials ( i.e. Cable, everything is bare bones). Please help!!! I could ask for help from my kids but do not want to. Had to lease a car,but did this before he gave me this bad news. I trust you implicitly, please help!!!

Martha Dobbs How did everything work out? You didn't share the pertinent information, housing cost, household expenses. You NEED to get rid of the lease ASAP and get yourself a cheap, cheap car. $2-3k. What other income do you have? Social security?

How do you get out of a car lease.
@herfirstmate7 жыл бұрын
Martha Dobbs Contact the leading company and see what you'd have to pay out to return the vehicle - the penalties. I've never had a lease so I don't know what that would look like, but sitting back passively and just paying the payments is not a good idea for you. Not in your situation.

I didn't mention that I'm 6 months into a 36 month lease. It is $200/month. Still think I should get out of it?
@herfirstmate7 жыл бұрын
Martha Dobbs Call them and see how much it would be. $200, is that creating a struggle for you? The car probably isn't your biggest problem. You might just have to buckle down and really try to get by. Have you found work? Did you have to open up your 401k over the last 90 days?
