Anxiety is no excuse. I’ve been living with “high levels of generalised anxiety disorder” since I was 16 (28 now) yes it can be crippling, yes it’s unfair, blah blah blah. It’s no excuse. You can get all the therapy and medication that you desire, but the only person that can change that, is you. People that have anxiety can become lazy and blame their life’s problems on it, but it’s only detrimental to you and nobody else. Once you realise that, doors begin to open.

Pretty much, she's doing the right thing seeing someone about the anxiety issues *(As this was prob triggered during the stresses of collage. This is a very common thing)* and she got great advice from you about needing to get on Dave's plan and CARE LESS about letting people down. Live your own life and when someone isn't happy with you, you smile and tell them that's all you can do. I was 60K in debt making 30K and now I'm debt free, making 80K. Took about 3-4 years.

It's amazing she had the courage to call but honestly in anxiety situations (and I have been there) the best thing you can do it's to go out of the house and try to do your life. It will be so hard at first but in few weeks or months it will feel natural. When you stay at home it's easier to think everything is bad and feel bad for yourself, when you go out and you are busy you have no time to be sad and anxious. Not only work will make her anxiety less severe than she will also have money to enjoy her life better and stop stressing about debt. She needs to get into the cycle, now she is just in a hole.

Yes. It's not that mental health issues aren't a serious problem. But society can't be patting people on the head and absolving them of any responsibility because of these issues. It's like people forget that the world doesn't owe us anything. I live in Boston. It's probably a global top 25 city, and would probably be the 5th most important economic hub in the USA, behind NYC, SF, LA, and Chicago. So, big magnet city for immigrants. I know there's going to be a lot of people sympathetic to this caller. I am as well. But let's be real here: imagine if a man called in saying that their household is bringing in barely above the poverty line in income with over 5x their income in various forms of debt, and he wasn't working due to anxiety issues. He would be ruthlessly shredded by many of the same people who demand sympathy for the caller. The reason I still will have sympathy for the caller is because I've literally seen it; some people get into bad situations and the obvious thing to do is not even something that crossed their mind. Remember the caller a few years ago from Houston who had all of the necessary education to be a teacher, except that she owed $1700 to her school before they'd release her transcript? So instead she worked as some aide making $19k a year and overwhelmed with student debt. "Go find a summer job" was something that never even crossed her mind.
