They're still getting calls about it because 4 hours after that decision dropped Biden announced he was going a different route to get forgiveness through using a regulatory process in the Higher Education Act of 1965. It's a longer process and it likely won't be as broad as the first attempt, but it also eliminates one of the key arguments that brought it to the Supreme Court in the first place.

Student loans are a tough one for me. I paid my student loans off but if I hadn't taken out student loans I'd probably still be in school (10 years later). Because the jobs available to me paid minimum wage. To save up enough cash to pay for just one semester would have taken years. And I went through the whole gambit, I tried working during school and I ended up failing a class and almost failing another because I didn't have time to study. I tried applying for grants. I got one small one but most grants aren't for white males. I suppose I could have picked up a job drywalling or doing something that pays better than minimum wage. But still, it took far less time for me to pay off student loans than it would have for me to save up. Because the jobs post-college paid significantly better then the pre-college jobs.

Weird vibes so many people are attaching morality to loan forgiveness. My $200k was forgiven due to my medical service. I’ve worked hard, I paid up until the pause and I justly met all criteria and followed the directions given. So now I’m a horrible, wicked person? Whatever…

I understand the expense and "predatory" nature of student loans... Still, if I was interviewing a person who lived for "free" the first eighteen years of life, then , even though they had the money to pay off their loan they waited to see if other people could pay it for them, they're not ready to work for me.... Zero sense of fairness or responsibility.... Sorry about the run on sentence, I have a degree, that I paid for but it wasn't in literature... 😂 😂 ..

Blanket forgiveness ain’t happening. Even if you want to be optimistic it ain’t happening until at least like March 2025. If you exist in one of the special categories (public service forgiveness, income repayment, etc) that it doesn’t sound like he does, maybe it’s different, but you’d already know that. What’s the interest rate? Is it less than a high yield savings account? If so, you can let it sit around and just pay the minimum, but I doubt it’s more than a fraction of a percent and minimal yield either way.

Question: My wife has about $40k in student loan debt. If we make monthly payments she gets it all back from the state each year due to an incentive to keep graduates in state. We can pay off the balance in full but that would use up all of our savings and leave no emergency fund. If we go that route we waive that annual incentive. We have no other debts besides our mortgage. Pay off in total or make the payments?

Sorry I know this long: I'm probably in the minority but I'd say pay the monthly and put the money that doesn't include your emergency fund and put that in a savings account and add the returns to it until it's at least equal to pay off the loan. In my mind the same way if it's not wrong to try to maximize your tax return each year it's fine to take advantage of this program so long as she is eligible. So it's important to make sure you'll want to stay eligible for this program until you're able to pay it off with the savings, so consider the terms like if you have to stay in that state I'd ask do you want to?
