In this stellar episode of AJIO Presents The Ranveer Show, we host Dr. Vikram Sampath. He is a popular Indian historian, noted for authoring biographies of Gauhar Jaan and V. D. Savarkar.
Bangalore-based historian Dr. Vikram Sampath is the author of 8 acclaimed books of history including biographies of Gauhar Jaan & Veer Savarkar & Bravehearts of Bharat on unsung heroes of India. He was elected as a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Historical Society of the UK, a winner of the Sahitya Akademi's first Yuva Puraskar in English literature & the ARSC Award for Excellence in Historical Research in New York. He has a Ph.D. in history & music from the University of Queensland, is a trained Carnatic vocalist & has established India's 1st digital sound archive for vintage gramophone recordings called the Archive of Indian Music.
This video is a breakdown of the Indian Freedom Struggle. The Indian independence movement was a series of historic events with the ultimate aim of ending British rule in India. It lasted from 1857 to 1947. Few leaders followed a more violent approach, than the others. This became especially popular after the Rowlatt Act, which permitted indefinite detention. The Act sparked protests across India, especially in the Punjab province, where they were violently suppressed in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The Indian independence movement was in constant ideological evolution.
He is one of the most knowledgeable guests on the show. Hope you enjoy this episode.

History textbooks in Maharashtra had a very amazing format. It could start from anywhere in the timeline with bits and pieces from any of the below: Indus Valley, Northern Invasions and Delhi Sultanate, Mughals, Marathas, Medieval Europe, European Renaissance, French Revolution, American Revolutions, World Wars, Russian Revolution - but somewhere in between it used to come down to the British in India and end ceremoniously on 15th August 1947. The only two Portuguese nationals whose names ever featured were Vasco Da Gama and Alphonso Albuquerque. 19th December 1961 has not even a passing mention. French colonies never featured. As for Gandhi, we actually learned how Gandhi struggled to starch his collar as a lawyer or his appendix operation when imprisoned in Yerawada. That was the depth one part was in focus and others even failed to feature.

It was India's bad luck that we had Gandhi leading the freedom movement. Where in the world people have got their freedom without bloodshed? It was never going to happen in India. The main reason behind British leaving was the revolt in Indian armed forces and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's INA.

The fact that Gandhi Ji was at the forefront of the fight & his values & words prevailed most with the Indians, the British & the world proves his leadership skill of bringing peace together. This leading that you mention doesn’t happen by chance but by choice & so Gandhi Ji was the first among equals. Only a good person can be at the helm & not someone who revolts or fights or screams. Let’s be honest, every Indian wanted an independent India & the others had an equal opportunity but couldn’t create a consensus either within or with the opposition. Gandhi Ji had a seat at the table only because he chose ahimsa & non violence. Now even the British would’ve shunned him had he told them that I’m going to kill generals & revolts in your army. Now what was the smartest thing to do - Gandhi Ji’s methods & his path , he was phenomenal & that can never be understood by Dr.Sampath

You only. know events but you don't know the context & the big picture & where Gandhi Ji was coming from, why he did what he did, so doesn't Dr.Sampath, who is clearly sitting in judgement & a poor one at that. Regardless Gandhi Ji was the most respected Indian - not just within India but also by the British & the world. No other freedom fighter had a seat at the table except Gandhi Ji - now that is telling something & it's sad that Dr.Sampath & his friends aren't reading anything into it & are taking that respect for granted.

British had much superior military and India not only lacked organised military but also nationalistic spirit. Gandhi wanted to awaken the nationalism among Indians by taking numerous padayatra. He went beyond caste, religion to foster unity to throw the British out. There are always good and bad about every human, Gandhi was unnecessary drawn into this, he didn't ask for position nor any other benefits post independence. His one agenda was to make the Indians to stay united. British ruled for nearly 200 years which means we failed innumerable times to send them out. Gandhi just used a strategy that worked. Don't get carried away by such shallow debates. Jai Hind!

The jobs as an army soldier or as clerks or (if affluent, then) as lawyers were enough run a family. Being a brahmin, important part of orthodoxy included procreation - which eventually meant running a household. So- once the world war was done; and independence was near- he quit army; and for as long as I remembered, I have seen him go back to traditional brahmin ways of living- performing his nitya karma-s 3 times a day.

V. O. Chidambaram PILLAI had a long correspondence with Gandhi, not yet Mahatma, from 1915 to 1920. In 1915, when Gandhi visited Chennai (Madras then), both had met. Some people in South Africa of Indian origin had collected money to help Chidambaram and transmitted the amount through Gandhi. However, Chidambaram did not receive the money. He had some lengthy correspondence with Gandhi on the subject. In one instance Gandhi wrote a postcard to Chidambaram in Tamil with his own hand. Chidambaram was delighted on seeing the postcard and, for a moment, forgot about the money dispute.[11] However, on 4 February 1916, Chidamabaram wrote to a friend, "Rs. 347-12-0 has come from Sriman Gandhi."[11] In 1920, Chidambaram quit the Indian National Congress, citing ideological differences with Mahatma Gandhi.

He cannot be compared with MG who was a kind of "politico" freedom fighter, with a larger reach, full of self-importance, even undharmically supporting Khalat movement. This is not to devalue MG contribution, on his own and as a part so many freedom fighters. Honestly, with or without Gandhi, India would have achieved independence, and yet Gandhi deserves our respect for his contribution. Time and destiny favoured Gandhi.

Thanks for the analysis and it is good to see young historians reanalyzing recent history and bringing in new perspective but my only concern is that we are looking at these people somewhat out of context. Unfortunately they are not here to speak for themselves and answer the questions we are asking in hind sight. South Asians had lost their rulers and the systems and mechanisms that governed the country to colonialism and those who led the freedom movement were pitched against a powerful empire with the challenge of building their own power bases anew. As a Sri Lankan I think they did what they could and thanks to their leadership we in Sri Lanka benefitted.

One should be careful enough while choosing words to describe monumental personalities like Gandhi. Hero or a secret villain is really very derogatory remark. And one section of political class for its vested interest is targeting Gandhi. A juxtaposition of the way of life gandhi spent and leaders of this so-called political class will give us clarity. A man who spent his life wearing a 2 piece khadi attire for the whole of his life and on the other side the ones wearing an attire of lakhs of rupees each day. Every body of that period played their role for independence. The problem comes with a selective approach of redefining the roles based on one's current days affinity. And don't forget that they are representing the leaders who wrote the British pages of letter hinting how the British cab curb Quit India movement. History registers everything whether we like it or not. End of any criticism should have a constructive benefit to the society at large. These critics underestimate the memory and understanding of viewers.

Agenda is something that holds bragging without facts and truth. For the past 70 years many Indian generations were the victims of falsified educational agenda projected with vested interests and malicious intentions. Today actually in this digital age we are realizing the blunders of education by the past ruling Governments.

During World War II Congress and Communists supported British and Russia against Germany. Communists denounced Netaji naming him Dog of Tojo. Didn't these created some impact on brown soldiers of British army?

These days no one actually likes Gandhi. Muslims never respected him that's why 90% voted for pakistan. Hindus also hate him now for siding with muslims and making hindus scapegoat. Dalits hate him because of disgreements with ambedkar. He used to do passive aggressive anshan. And now liberals are also disliking Gandhi. I am atheist too, Gandhi do not deserve this much hate but he didn't deserve this much praise to begin with. I never liked this rastrapita BS. Non violence is most low iq move I have seen in history as if non violence work 😂

Mahatma was controversial in many ways, and he should not be called the father of the nation. Doctor Ambedkar should be called the father of the nation. I was once a fan of Gandhi, but after doing more research, I realised that he was not a mahatma. He was racist, and prejudiced against black Africans , he was not against the caste system, and didn’t allow Dalits to represent themselves. He was prejudiced against Sikhs, who made maximum sacrifices for this country. He didn’t like the fact that they didn’t always use nonviolent means to fight for independence. He called Guru Gobind Singh a misguided patriot for using the sword against emperor Aurangzeb.

No i don't agree with Ambedkar either. All he has done is dividing people in someother way neither he abolished caste system. He gave 10 yrs of reservations but it's 75 yrs but caste feelings and reservations both exists. So no point of him being a father of nation.

@@ananthan8951 which India are you talking about ? India existed as a nation under Ashoka, then under the British . India had a feudal system before they came . We always put the blame on the British, but the tragedy of partition was created by Indian politicians who were and are still keen to create communal tension, just for the sake of power . Sat Sri Akal, Salam shalom Shanti.

German-born theoretical physicist Albert Einstein once said: "I believe that Gandhi's views were the most enlightened of all the political men of our time." One of the greatest physicists of all time Einstein and Gandhi admired and respected each other. They also wrote letters to each other. Einstein praised Mahatma Gandhi's principles of non-violence in his letters and audio recordings addressed to the Indian freedom fighter. The letters were dated back to 1931, even before World War II began. Excerpts from one of the letters, translated from German, read: "You have shown through your works, that it is possible to succeed without violence even with those who have not discarded the method of violence."
