I am a Goan Catholic, my grandfather was from Cuncolim, originally his parents or grandparents were Hindus who converted. But Goa Catholics continue to believe their roots. In the 90s, I remember grandfather always spoke of Bhutas (in Goa they called them Rakondars or protectors) who protect boundaries of lands and their people, their possessions, he would speak to them often especially walking alone late nights and tell me how Rakondar would walk with him to home, how these spirits would protect him from evil spirit attacks and temptations on his way back home and he wouldn't fear. I believe my grandfather as I have witnessed real evil spirits possession of my uncle and his exorcism by elders with the help of Rakondar with my own eyes. I am glad finally we are respecting and knowing our roots... than just bollywood garbage.

I don't think he meant it that way, don't be too sensitive, you will end up dismissing his point all together. He meant to compare that there are still parts of Karnataka that are completely rural and not lost to westernisation.
We truly appreciate your effort to spread awareness about local cultures and traditions. A few corrections: 1. We prefer the term 'Daiva' over 'Bhuta'. 2. These are 'Protective Spirits' and are also called 'Satyolu' (Satyas or Truths) who are said to preserve balance between Nature and Man. Hence Daivaaradhane is highly focused on the relationship between Nature and Man (One of the key themes of Kantara) 3. Kola does NOT equal to dance. In the Daivaradhane tradition, Kola is an annual event. There are 16 parts/systems within a Kola, ONE of which is the dance (Nalike). 4. Serpents are worshipped very prominently alongside Daivas in the same region and the reference is often made by the Medium during the speaking (Nudi) part of a Kola. 5. The Medium is said to be possessed for not more than a few seconds at a time during the Kola ("Mukkaal-muji ghalige" and this can happen multiple times the same night), and is said to be a channel for the divine energy throughout. While the talk and experiences are really interesting, sometimes, people who don't know the practice will find it hard to believe and dismiss it as blind belief. The real essence of a practice gets left out and just these superficial-sounding instances get highlighted. To talk about the values associated with such highly detailed and nuanced traditions, please bring in people who have seen and know about these traditions.
@shishirs2007 Жыл бұрын
Bhoota refers to "Bhooth kaal"...worship of old ancestors..Before gods of Puranas, vedas were introduced in the south , People worshipped the ancestors.. Kola is still practiced once in a year, A bhoota of a Hamlet is believed to be watching over the people, gives a solution to a dispute, most of all he gives a feeling to the people that if they do anything wrong, they will be punished for sure ..which prevents crimes .

I have seen daiva possessions in Bengal. There have been instances where the possessed person solved domestic problems and healing the diseased.

He is not quiet right about theyyam , Kola etc. These are very much interlinked with god. Not spirits or anything. There is Lakshmi, Vishnu, Bali, Sugriv, etc. Almost 40+ theyyams are there. It's literally that form of the God communicating.
