The correct answer is we don't know if that really happened or the accounts we have (ramayana and manas etc) are accurate or not. You can believe if you want, you're also free to not believe. It is mythology unless backed by believable historical evidence. Most of Indian knowledge will fall to the ground if subjected to scientific validation. We are a superstitious nation and our superstition and religion has little to do with God.
