In the longpond version, Taylor ends this song with the most powerful line: “look at all of my tears, turning into your tears” - and then a huge, soul deep sigh. *gives me goosebumps* The depth of her sorrow, regret, disappointment, betrayal, and anger is absolutely palpable 😭
@SCS892 жыл бұрын
The line “you wear the same jewels…” is a metaphor for the life style he was able to have and then was able to buy off of Taylor’s work. “When you bury me” is when he signed over the rights to her work knowing she would never be able to get them back. *Also, I’m a new Swifty! What I love about the line: ‘you can aim for my heart go for blood, but you would still miss me in your bones’ is that the heart pumps the blood through the body, it moves the love around, but the bones are where blood is actually made, it’s the ‘home’ she can’t go back to. Bleeding is the liberation of blood from the system, but the bones, the skeleton, is where it all began.

Also the skeleton or 'bones' are the only thing that will remain even in death. You can bleed a person dry, but even in modern cremation the skeleton remains and is crushed in to ashes. So after thousands of years what is left of you is your bones. I just think this can line up with the funeral/death imagery this song has. 'All we are is skin and bone trained to get along' - Treacherous

When she says “ you were the same jewels, that I gave you as you bury me” , I think she refers to her music and albums that she created, which were used against her. She also uses a similar metaphor in “Bejeweled“ : “Didn't notice you walking all over my peace of mind In the shoes I gave you as a present”.

Very interesting to hear your take on “when I’d fight, you used to tell me I was brave”! I always took it as being manipulative, like when she’d speak up and fight back, they would condescendingly call her “brave”, and turn everything around to blame and gaslight her. And now she's being brave, by standing by the truth and how it hurt her.

"And I still talk to you, when I'm screaming at the sky And when you can't sleep at night, you'll hear my stolen lullabies" The bridge for this song hit me hard cause it made me think of my ex and how I only wanted him to treat me the way he told me he would. I still "scream at the sky" when I question why he sold me a fantasy he couldn't fulfill and whenever I reminisce about the days when he used to try his best to show me how much he loved me. He also has really bad insomnia that he sometimes resorts to sleeping pills. I never liked that and asked him to stop when we started dating. Thankfully, when we did date, his insomnia kinda weakened and all he needed to sleep was to be in a call with me. There were days when I'd hum lullabies until I couldn't hear anything from his end besides his relaxed breathing or snores. I somehow became his own sleeping pill. It was to the point that weeks after we broke up he still had days when he'd ask me if I could be in a call with him until he fell asleep. And since I still loved him, and I can't say that I don't even now, rejecting those requests wasn't an option.

i find this so interesting bcs i always saw this song as her 'death'. like her losing her music was the death of her, and scooter and borchetta were at the funeral like 'no come back to us plz we wanna work with u again'. then there's the bridge aswell, 'i can go anywhere i want just not home' like she can make as much new music as she wants but shell never get her original stuff back, 'aim for my heart go for blood but you would still miss me' like they can take her most precious things, her heart, but they'd still miss her and working (owning) her. and then ofc the 'stolen lullabies' being her music. 'u had to kill me but it killed u' by taking her music they took her whole life but in the process destroyed their reputation and career aswell. i rly hope all this makes sense lmao

This song tells the story of someone married to a covert narcissist for 30 years. You loved them unconditionally through every up & down, building a family and a life together. The shock & devastation of the end happens so violently and painfully that you just never have time to ask for grace! I didn’t have the grace either back then. Now that I know in my bones that I was actually “the better man” in that partnership all along, it’s like I am exactly where I need to be today!! Without him.

I really really love this song so much. Taylor is special and a lyrical genius I can’t emphasize that enough. She has this way with words, drawing parallels between so much situations that her songs can fit into. In addition to your interpretation which I also see, I also she it as a breaking of bonds/relationship between 2 Besties/ friends. You as in “my brother/sister from another mother” “my partner in crime “. The type of friend you’ll have a “friendship bracelet” for. As they say all too often a super hero’s greatest enemy/arch nemesis is his or her friend. Vowing to take on the “bad guys” together for those who don’t have the strength to fight. Never in your wildest dreams you imagine that the worst, the most difficult, the most horrendous one you’ve face yet is who was once your best friend. You used to draw blades together, now your drawing blades against each other. The line “Screaming at the Sky” I can see it as you just doing it figuratively or literally screaming “damn you, damn you WHY????” There are so much more I can say about the song, but I’ll just leave it here.

Damn 😅now I’m balling now I understand why I love this song. I’ve been betrayed constantly my whole life for being so kind or to giving . My ex 11:17 best friend slept with my ex and did it so infront so openly almost as wanting to hurt me. She then had the nerve to make a face account and talk badly about me to my mom like saying I was sleeping around doing stuff my mom is very strict and abusive. She damn well knew my mom would beat the fuck out of me and still did that. My mom is no saint but she did this with the worst intent because she was jealous I was getting attention from boys and didn’t need her even though I begged for her attention when she got new friend who did her wrong. And yet she did this. So seeing it as a friend ship turn into a betrayal hits harder.

I know this is an older video, but this, by far, has been the most emotional for me. Your vulnerability and raw emotion on top of it. Gah. I, essentially, am currently going through a "divorce" and this song, amongst a ton of others, just guts me every time. I saw another video talking about your child, and your patience with him. My daughter is 3 and was diagnosed about a year ago, and in addition but through no fault of her own, to other issues in the marriage just adds an extra layer of pain and stress and another nail in the coffin, because it is all so hard, especially when it is just layers upon layers...it feels hard to climb your way out of to a healthier place again. Anyway, this video really hit me hard because it hits so close to home. Thank you for always being so honest, open and helping so many of us heal through these videos.

I believe the line about the jewels is about her songs, as he wears (owns) the jewels (songs) she gave him. Because Taylor has referred to her songs as "jewels" before (also, think of the song Bejeweled as well and its lyrics). I am not sure though, that's just what I think! Great videos Mere, thank you for your analyses, I find them fascinating!!

This one hits me hard. It feels like when my grandmother excommunicated me and my mother from the rest of the family. The reason? My mom finally got the guts to confront my grandmother about the abuse she suffered as a child. I was so proud of my mom and fully supported her and that earned me an excommunication too. My grandmother wanted to always be the saint in every story and would lie constantly to make her public image clean. I remember people at her wake telling me how lucky I was to have had a grandmother like her. I wanted to laugh in their faces and scream with rage the entire time. Sorry not sorry that she’s dead.

I feel like all the interpretations are totally valid , that’s why it’s so great. For me, it has brought up a lot of feelings from past breakups specifically a man who years later died in an off roaring accident : because the song talks so much about the death metaphors, but also about how things turn out so much differently than you expect, and how someone is reckless and careless, and makes decisions that affect both people. I remember when we dated I used to always yell at him to put his seatbelt on and he ended up dying in an accident because he didn’t have a seatbelt on… so it was like he turned into MY worst fear and I still do talk to him and scream st the sky and say why the hell did you act so recklessly ?

She says someone who is your best friend, then turns into your worst enemy, has the most ammunition to hurt you the most. I think the stones she talks about collecting on the way is just symbolism for bits of knowledge. You collect little pieces of information about this companion along the road of life sometimes they are used against you but sometimes those tiny bits are safe with the companion and turn into something beautiful. She has common themes that make me think marriage is her ultimate dream goal. All she wants is to be in love and loved equally in return. Who doesn’t?!? But her mentions of symbols of marriage, diamond ring for example, are symbolic to a end game goal. Then when she says you wear the same jewels that i gave you as you bury me i think she’s expressing this person is using the information she freely gave him out of trust to figuratively kill her.

To me, this song is about leaving a relationship with a narcisist. well, everyone does see what they have personally been through. But you know how narcisits always pretend like nothing hurts them (or maybe with some it actually doesn't) and when they do that god awful manipulation tactic of watching you dying from mental pain with like a completely straight face or even a smile nd a laugh (been there ugh)... but then you DO leave eventually and all of a sudden they ARE hurt? yeah. the tears recochetted. So that question about him being at the wake is like 'i though you swore you didnt give a damn, but yet when shit hit the fan and i actually left all of a sudden you do care??' and they end up actually being hurt by you going throuhg that nonchalant facade, because it killed them just the same. they end up missing you, and they are at the wake. the whole song for me is this 'victory' you hold because afterall you WERE right, they DID have feelings and they ARE hurt now that they lost you, even though the whole relationship they did this not caring thing.

I agree it is about divorce - at least that is what I get from it as I am in the middle of a divorce it all hits hard. I also think the stolen lullabies is about stealing the fairy tale life they could have had.

Sometimes I just want to give you a big ol' hug. Taylor Swift has always been a major part of my life (well, I'm old, so since she started making music). She's been there on my journey through broken hearts, addiction, dealing with CPTSD (military and otherwise). So I know you totally get it!

Watched it again and feel this even deeper. I'm a writer and i cannot even find the words as to why this hits so deep.

The "you wear the same jewels that I gave you as you bury me" line I understand it as more figuratively, like the person "wearing" all the pieces of advice you gave them when you were in the relationship, all the favors, etc. Ofc you don't do it and expect something back, but kinda, at least you expect them to not betray you and when they do, you may regret giving all those things to them, have mixed feelings about it cause you know they still are benefitting from it even unconsciously. Maybe you helped them quit smoking, or they learned to love something about themselves cause you gave them a compliment on something they had an insecurity even if you did not know it and it changed their perception, etc

I didn’t have it myself to go with grace “state of grace from the red album” Hero flying around “superman from speak now album” If I’m dead to you “ cos she’s dead from reputation album” Cursing my name “ comes form the lyric and I’m cursing your name from the album fearless” Wishing you stayed “ all you had to do was stay from 1989” Look how my tears ricochet “tear drops on my guitar” This song is about her “stolen lullabies” as she has a lyric representing each album that was taken from her

I'm relating to this song a lot lately. It reminds me of my ex who was a narcissist. She was an alcoholic and kept hurting me over and over emotionally in our relationship. In the end, she would not acknowledge how much she hurt me. I kept going back to the relationship over and over. Now I am recently going through hurt from a friend. We've been estranged lately because of her jealous girlfriend. It's complicated to be friends because of the girlfriend but she won't acknowledge that she led me on before she met her girlfriend. She put me in the friendship but wanted to keep me at a platonic capacity as we were when she met her girlfriend. But now I'm on the sidelines hurting because I know I have to walk away because she won't put any of the fault on herself, and it's too complicated. She's saying she's frustrated and upset but not addressing the situation. I feel like I'm losing my best friend. I think she loves me but won't acknowledge it because she didn't know what she wanted. I'm mourning over the relationship. It's tough to let go of someone you love.

As someone who lost their mom to suicide after she had a horrible life. This song to me is a letter to all of us after her suicide. This song hurts me so badly

I have a completely different take on this song. It’s about being heartbroken by someone for sure, but how it bounces back to that persons detriment. The stones are her songs. Some are hits/diamond rings, some are not. The battleships sinking beneath the waves…the songs he bought she rendered worthless with her re-records. To me, this is about someone getting their own back on a person that betrayed her. He made her cry but her tears ricocheted right back at him. It’s not sad at the end to me at all!

While I agree with the themes of divorce in this song, I think the central theme is betrayal and separation. Taylor says that when her fans listen to her music, she doesn't want them to picture her ex-boyfriends or happenings in her life, she wants them to apply the songs to their own. Divorce isn't something that everyone can relate to, but betrayal and separation is. A straight person might not be able to relate to the pain that is felt by queer listeners who have not found acceptance in their families. Similarly, a young fan might not be able to relate to the pain of going through a divorce. Regardless, all of these groups can identify with this song. Taylor might have been influenced by divorce, but I don't see it as simply a song about divorce. I think it's a song about betrayal and the anguished separation that comes with being hurt by someone who you love.

I totally agree! I just chose to take it through that lens bc that’s been my experience. I agree that it’s betrayal and separation.
