I love how you three reacted. this song can be for any occasion, it can be for a breakup, for revenge, or for a divorce. but this song is even more specific to her old records label (Big Machine Records) and Scott Borchetta. This expresses Taylor's heart to him, for he caused Taylor to re-record all of her albums (Taylor's Version).

This song is about the end of her relationship with Scott Borchetta, head of her first record label, who sold her masters out from under her to Scooter Braun, one of the industry executives she despises the most. Scott took her on when she was 15 and in some ways was like a father to her, so this cut incredibly deep. The lyric that sounded to you like “you wear the same shoes” is actually, “you wear the same jewels that I gave you as you bury me.” The jewels are her songs.

Relisten to it knowing she is singing about her Scott Borchetta her old label head. When she didn’t re-sign (“wishing. I stayed”), and he sold her masters to Scooter Braun (after begging and asking to buy them back), hurt her beyond belief. Then there was a huge PR war between Taylor, Scott & Scooter (“had to kill me”, “running around saving face”). References to “stolen lullabies” is referencing her masters. It is a brilliant piece of songwriting. I think you guys would love her entire folklore & evermore album.

Safe and sounds is the hunger games song! It’s from like 2012. This song wrecked me for months after I heard it. It’s not even about a person, it’s about her old music label, big machine records. It was a very messy and public breakup. “And I can go anywhere just not home” aka “I can go anywhere with my music bc everyone wants me but I can’t go back to the only label I’ve ever known”…. I hope Scooter Braun and Scott borchetta have eternal bad days for the rest of their lives. I love this reaction tho y’all are awesome!

I hate when people say they can't wait for another breakup so she can write about it! This song is about a lot of pain but not from a boyfriend. She was with her partner like 4 years at the time that this came out. 5 of her 10 albums have been put out while she was with him. The reality is, she is a fantastic lyricist with or without breakups. I would argue that when she was happily in a relationship was when her best music was put out.

I love what this song is actually about but also i feel this song on a visceral level for the abusive relationship i had with my mother who had BPD and going no contact with her. The chorus applies so well. The anger i feel about how i don't have it in me to leave "with grace" per se but then she's all cursing my name, wishing i stayed, and I'm the one left crying but maybe Ricocheting, like Taylor says at the end my tears turning into your tears. That is a twist on the lyric that only appears in this performance of it and i love that little lyric. Also of course "i can go anywhere i want, just not home" fits a little too well. "You turned into your worst fears" and "drunk on this pain", applies way too well to my mom too.

I believe this is about the death of her relationship with Scott Borchetta, founder of Big Machine Records. I believe Taylor, as a young teen, was his first client…. so his whole label was basically built on her music. This is a great song. I guess you can say that this is a breakup song. _Breakups_ can come in all forms, right? In this case, it is a breakup of a business partnership, a breakup of a professional relationship, a breakup of a friendship, etc. The potent lines that you (Evan) and Jake pointed out, I really love--"You wear the same jewels that I gave you, as you bury me"; essentially saying, "You are disparaging me in public, after everything I and my music have done for you. I helped make the label what it is, and you made a lot of money off of me, and you are willing to screw me over". And the line, "I can go anywhere that I want, just not home"; she can have/get anything she wants in the world, just not _her_ music. And her music is _her home_ , a place where she finds solace and comfort. It is a very beautiful piece of lyrical art.

This song can be interpreted many different ways, including a breakup. However we believe she actually wrote it about losing her first 6 albums. Scot Brochetta who gave her her first redord deal, sold the masters of her first 6 albums to a third party (and specifically to someone Taylor really dislikes). This is why she's re-recoding them, so she can own them.

2:40 in the words of Taylor Swift herself, “effortlessness is a myth” 😉 but really, what I’m using that quote to portray here is that I’m continually impressed with the clarity and overall improvement of her vocals. I’ve been a fan of hers since 2006, and not gonna lie…in the beginning, her vocals were sometimes questionable during live performances. I still loved her, but I knew she wasn’t getting famous because of her singing skills. The improvement is in no small part due to a tremendous amount of effort, I’m sure. P.S. the lyric is “you wear the same jewels 💎 that I gave you, as you bury me”…I literally always sing “shoes” instead of jewels as well. 😅 Dying laughing, I thought I was the only one haha.

I love My Tears Ricochet. Taylor is very emotional singing this sad, but beautiful song. She sounds amazing. The lyrics are very relatable about breaking up with someone, even though the song is actually about Scott Borchetta of Big Machine, selling Big Machine and her 6 masters "her stolen lullabies", to Scooter Braun, someone Taylor extremely disliked. So Scott actually did break her heart. Taylor is re-recording her 6 masters (4 are done). It was something she was able to do, as she wrote almost all her songs. That pianist in the leather jacket is Aaron Dessner, lead singer of the Bleachers, after leaving The National. Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff are the two producers on her Evermore Album. And this is why I LOVE Taylor Swift...her ability to connect with her audience, no matter who is listening...is unmatched. And THIS is why I love watching these reaction videos! Especially...and please don't take this the wrong way, but...reactions from "stereotypical" guys who have been taught, because of stupid societal notions, to repress their emotions. I wish all guys would listen to Taylor Swift. So many of her songs are so deep, without being overly-done, and so relatable that you can't help but to FEEL them. I think men need a way to get in touch with those emotions that they haven't been allowed to feel. I mean, when one of you (sorry, I didn't catch your names) said that you were glad the other stopped the video to make a penis joke because you were getting teary eyed, that just was a perfect example of how men have been made to feel that they can't express emotion. I REALLY appreciate you letting yourselves be vulnerable and emotional! Hope you'll share more of these reactions. And she has so many that are NOT so gut-wrenching, but just thought-provoking and even some that are just fun and still contain lyrics that are so clever that you have to appreciate her wit. Hope you'll take the journey and explore some more of her music. There is A LOT to hear!

I know I'm super late to the party, but I just wanted to tell you how validating it is to see somebody else pick up on the, "I can go anywhere I want, just not home," line. I have watched so many people react to this song, and you are the first reactors I've seen to call out that particular line. That is the lyric that always resonates with me. Six years ago, after years of a crushing marriage, my ex-husband finally snapped and hurt our daughter, and after he left for work, I took the day off work, packed up as much of the kids' and my stuff as I could while he was gone, and got the heck out of Dodge. And just like that, home wasn't home anymore and I couldn't go back. It's a very unsettled, depressing, and frightening feeling. I'm sad that she (and Jake apparently) knows that type of feeling too, whether it's as literal as my experience or not, but it's nice in a way to know that I'm not alone. That's one of the things I so appreciate about Taylor's music. She shares the vulnerable feelings we don't dare share because we don't know if they're "normal," but by sharing her feelings, she makes me feel not so crazy for feeling the same things, I guess.
