I interpreted the lyrics "Putting someone first only works when you're in their top 5" as saying she put the person first but for them she wasn't even in their top 5 of priorities in life (which is a pretty lenghly list when talking about priorities in the first place, so I think she was exaggerating on purpose). Like saying to us "Look, if you're not even in their top 5 of priorities... it ain't gonna work no matter how much you treat them as your number 1 priority"

If you watch the music video it shows Taylor also giving a double meaning to the the graded on a curve line with how she removes her cloak. The second meaning being that she was putting in all this extra effort into the relationship, but ultimately was just being graded on her body. The way her word combinations so often create these double meanings always fascinate me.

I also see this song as having a double meaning with her albums being sold from under her. She referred to her songs as jewels in the my tears ricochet when she says "you wear the same jewels that I gave you as you buried me" . The line "I did all the extra credit then got graded on a curve" makes me think she's referring to her past albums. Like she did all this work on her past albums but it didn't matter. Then she says "I can reclaim the land" (I.e. Reclaiming her albums by rerecording them). Just thought it was another interpretation.

This song has parallels to her other songs. I'd like to believe this is 'Tolerate It' is she had regained her confidence "I made you my temple, my mural, my sky." Also 'mirrorball' And I love how this reaction is different from your other ones. Usually the other songs were more sad and depressing (which I love) but this one's happy and uplifting.

I also noticed the lyrical parallel of: All Too Well 10 min: "the idea you had of me, who was she? A never needy, every lovely jewel, whose shine reflects on YOU" Bejeweled: "Best believe I'm still bejeweled, when I walk in the room, I can still make the WHOLE PLACE shimmer" She got her light back and no one can take it away from her.

I hear this song as her break up letter to Joe, because they were in a slow death relationship and she was reclaiming herself even before they were publicly over. Personally, I think they split before the tour started and kept it quiet for a while… but the signs are all there. She was tired of hiding away her sparkle ✨

I think the "top five" references Myspace!! She used to connect to her fans that way. Could be wrong, but that is a fun interpretation of it! I love your reactions to Taylor's songs! I always saw references in this song to her relationship with Calvin Harris, she got him Kenye brand sneakers for his birthday, She wrote the song he recorded with Rihanna, apparently he didn't want the song linked to her name so she used it a pseudonym, in publicity interviews he was asked if he thought about creating something with Taylor, his then girlfriend, and he said that he had no intention of working with her on any music, that's when she took over the authorship and that the vocals in the chorus were the her voice, I figured that's where the top 5 comes from and the rest. A while later they broke up and he released a song about "her being the only thing standing in her way" basically blaming her for his shitty behavior.
