This song is filled with incredible imagery and meaning. In the beginning she describes her relationship with a man. One whom she trusted and felt secure in. A man who made promises about the future, promising that he’ll always be there. Banisters are sturdy devices used to provide support and stability so you don’t lose your balance. By saying he’d always coming back to paint them it’s saying he’ll always be there, supporting her so she doesn’t fall. In the second verse it’s implied he left. Now she’s bruised (blue) and heartbroken. She sings of her girlfriends who are there to try attempt to help her heal even though that hole he left is still there, aching. When bruises begin to heal they go from being blue to a greenish grey color. I think It’s signifying that the mark he left is still there, but it’s slowly beginning to heal. The color of the bannisters has changed explaining that her friends have replaced the color and have taken his place supporting her even though it won’t be the same as it was when he was there. The heartache lingers and stings, but she has her friends there to get her through it and provide a new kind of support and stability in her life while she heals.

The blue, green, and grey is definitely talking about a bruise. It’s like she’s still hurt, but slowly healing with her friends and family. Also, in the music video for “ride” she talks about winter being a dark time in her life and summer being a brighter time. May weather could symbolize getting out of the darkness but still not being fully in the light. She seems stuck in the middle in this song. But right after May is June, so maybe brighter days are on the horizon :)

The references to Oklahoma are probably allusions to her ex boyfriend - the TV cop who, unbeknownst to Lana, was engaged at the time (the same guy from Part 1 of "A&W" where Lana's a sidepiece at 33). Lana recently said she hoped no one would listen to Blue Banisters (the album) but released it just in case people wanted "information". It's a deep, understated gem with so many layers to unpeel. "Dealer", "Wildflower Wildfire", and "Sweet Carolina" are also especially great. Thanks so much for another great reaction!🥰❤

Tex and Mex are her dogs in case you were wondering. I love that she mentions them because dogs are amazing companion animals. Lana has talked about them as great companion dogs who always cheer her up in the past on an ig live once around 2021 “Chuckys making birthday cake, chickens running, barefoot, there’s a baby on the way and now my blue banisters are green and grey” that to me is where I feel that she’s seeing that there is life all around her beyond the sadness. Green and grey symbolizing the healing of a bruise cycle. She’s so amazing I love her sm

Also- the kids running around, the baby on the way- is sweet imagery of spring time, but also a heartbreaking reminder that he didn’t fulfill that promise to give her children. She’s Happy and blessed with her sisters children yet sad because their lives are moving on in ways she hoped and dreamed for herself.

Also, if you think about the utility of a banister, is the support that you have when you're going up and down some stairs. And I truly think it is a metaphor when she's singing about them, the man that she talks about lied and gave her no support, saying that he will come back to help her paint her banisters blue, and fix the weathervane, and take her pain away, Lana was hoping for him to be the support that she needed (wich he wasn't) but her sisters are there painting the banisters green and gray, so, they are giving her the support that she needs

I love in the 2nd verse “There’s a man that’s in my past There’s a man that’s still right here He’s real enough to touch and In my darkest nights he’s shining” At 1st listen it’s like wait… he’s still there? He’s lighting up your dark nights? But no, shes saying the presence of him weighing on her thoughts is still so real. He’s “shining” on those dark nights as in he’s so noticeable, he’s the cause. I just love how she uses those common metaphorical phrases that we here in other songs to typically describe love but flips them on their head. It’s misleading in a fun way. She challenges the listeners to rlly go through a few times & think deeply & question things. It’s fun hehe 💙

I was shocked to learn that Blue Banisters is the most underrated or even disliked album by a huge part of Lana's fanbase. I just came here to share my passion for this album. I absolutely adore it not only because it relates so much to my personal life experience, but also since it's a universally relatable, emotional work of art. Her lyrics are at her most personal and most powerful. I feared that a poet would run out of rhymes one day, but not Lana. I have listened to her for over 10 years and she still manages to surprise me. I thought that you cannot top NFR, but she exceeded herself. Lana + piano is a match made in heaven. She entered the realm of high art. Lana is my modern John Lennon. In her stripped-back productions, her vocals and lyrics sound so powerful. Deep, meaningful. So raw and vulnerable, you can feel every nuance of the pain, and the light. The melodies are beautiful and haunting. Her piano ballads are a controversial topic among the fans, some find them weaker than the lavish productions on Born to Die or Ultraviolence, but I think the opposite. She is the strongest in her quieter ballads, I knew that when we first got a taste of her future development with Change and the live performance of How to Disappear. This reminded me so much of her days as Lizzy Grant. For me, songs like Pawn Shop Blues and Yayo remained unmatched for a long time, until Blue Banisters. Don't get me wrong, I love all eras of Lana Del Rey including her fun, catchy songs, but she takes it to a whole other level with albums like NFR and Blue Banisters. Lana faced so much negativity in 2020/21, got cancelled basically, yet she truely did turn blue into something beautiful. I feel like songs like Arcadia, BB, Black Bathing Suit, Beautiful are an answer to all the criticism she received. I am still amazed at her capacity to create art. I believe that Blue Banisters is a timeless classic, and I will continue to love and praise this album hopefully til the day I die.

Yes you can see the literal story of those parts play out in the music video! It’s very cute & cottagecore hehe. I hope you watch it, Mere! Also, she did live in Oklahoma on a ranch w her ex. She’s lived in a few rural places in the US, including a trailer park in Jersey haha. It’s another HUGE reason I adore Lana. She glamorizes simplicity’s of small town life & every day lower/middle class things in such a beautiful way. It’s relatable to me & makes me feel like my life matters a lot more than listening to a song that talks about flying all over the world & having riches/fame. Even though I know she’s a millionaire it makes me feel like she looks at us “little people” as no more important than herself… I mean it could be pandering lol who knows, but it’s a nice sentiment (not to mention smart tactic) 🥰

I can't believe I'm only seeing this now omg This is one of my favorite Lana songs, the symbolism and complex songwriting mesmerizes me, she's a genius, you can only fully understand what's the ideia of the song as you go, she paints the picture slowly. This song makes me think of “Fishtail” as well, when she sings “you wanted me sadder”. It’s like if this man in this song promised everything she wanted to, but in return she’d have to be sad so she would always depend and wait on him. That’s why he would paint her bannisters blue, like painting her life sad as a condition for staying with her. At the same time, I think that when she sings about her sisters coming over and doing simple stuff like swimming, and writing, and doing birthday cake and walking barefeet, it’s as if she could find peace and recovery on the simple and daily things. I hope it makes any sense! I love your videos and hope you’re enjoying to do them!!!

Blue banisters could be literal but also metaphorical, banisters its her support, when its blue she was asking him to be right there when she was sad but he never did, thats why she skipped May, when her friends and sisters come its green represents that she is healing, and I associate the color gray with being calm and neutral somehow like in peace. I don’t know if anyone have pointed this out, but the weathervane thing is a parrallel to violet bent backwards over the grass ‘sportcruiser’ “Never run the ship into irons. That’s nautical terms for not sailing the boat directly into the wind. In order to do that though you have to know where the wind is coming from. And you might not have time to look to the mast or up farther to the weather vane so you have to feel where the wind is coming from- on your cheeks, and by the tips of the white waves- from which direction they’re rolling. To do this, he gave me an exercise. He told me to close my eyes and asked me to feel on my neck which way the wind was blowing. I already knew I was going to get it wrong. “The wind is coming from everywhere- I feel it all over.” I told him. “No,” he said. “The wind is coming from the left. The port side.” I sat waiting for him to tell me, “you don’t trust yourself.” But he didn’t, so I said it for him.”

A lot of people have also theorized and connected with the idea of the transition from blue to green and gray being a healing transformation, like a bruise, as you brought up

hey Mere, so glad you're covering lana's songs. i LOVE these videos-- they're so incredibly healing. would you mind reacting to pink champagne (an unreleased song), pretty when you cry, and HONEYMOON! thank you so much-- you absolutely have to experience pink champagne if anything, though. it's easily my new all time favorite of hers. ☺💕💕💙💙

This is the first time that i watch one of ur videos and i loved it immensely, you’re excellent at analyzing lyrics for real, i hope you will react to the entire blue banisters album and i cant wait to see your “fingertips” reaction and interpretation as well. I think fingertips is one of the most complex songs lyrically and it really tells her story

Such an underrated track. I took the reference to painting more literal and that I'm she just chose a different colour opposite to what the man said he would do. Love love love this song. It's very powerful and tells an amazing story.

Don’t forget that the man at the first of the song said he comes every may. And now he’s sisters are who are with her in may His banisters are not blue anymore (like the man say), now his sisters help her to paint to green (hope)

I always love to think of the blue/green/grey metaphors as bruises healing :) the women in her life help lift her up and heal her in the spring time, specifically in May. May has Mother's Day and we all know she has a really tough relationship with her mother :/
