@terry damn man that is rough. I never met the band, but as a 21yo when it happened, I’d never been so upset about a celebrity death. It’s happened a couple of times since when Robin Williams and then Big Vin passed unexpectedly. Dimebag was an incredibly special guy, and I think he touched more people than he ever realised. I was 18 when my dad died. He was an alchoholic and career felon but i always felt i could fix him. He died fresh out of prison and 20 mins from my house in a car accident. I jammed this song as loud as i could many times to help me through. 38 years later i still cry listening to it, being stripped of the chance to help him. Looking back, there was no helping him, but i would have rather had the chance... Thank you for this one!

The intro is so beautiful, people always make the mistake of reacting to the official video and chop off an amazing part of the song. Another Pantera song that would be interesting for you to analyze is Hollow, a really sad song that reflects on the grief of losing someone without them even being actually dead.

I'm from Columbus Ohio, and frequented the Alrosa VIlla club for many years. Sadly I was there when DImebag was killed along with several other innocents in December of 2004. It's taken 20 years for some of the PTSD to surface of this event. I locked it away. I've lived a hard life and seen other violence of this sort that bothered me more because I lost loved ones to it. RIP Dimebag and all the others that died, and the ones who have to live with the memory of this tragedy.

His mother abandoned him when he was 2. He had a brain aneurysm at age 21. Left him a vegetable for 20 years before he passed

The day Dimebag died, I went into my room numb from what I had watched on tv and put on Vulgar Display. I had the cd booklet out and was reading along with the lyrics and made it to Hollow and I absolutely lost it. With the pain of his death only hours old, hearing the lyrics completely destroyed me and took on a whole new meaning. It took many years for me to hear that song and not cry on the spot. I now listen loudly and with vigor knowing that Dime's legacy and musical talents will not die so long as someone listens to his music. Long Live Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul.

They werent a just a staple they saved heavy metal at the time. If you followed and was around then you would understand the scene and the impact this band had at that time for the heavy metal scene and fans. I got to see them live a couple of times. I watch any Pantera related video that comes across my feed. They NEVER get old. Been to Dimes grave a couple years after he died, and again after Vinnie died, the latter with my best friend who passed a few months later. That was the last time we were able to really hangout, was going there and Pantera was at the top of both of our all-time favorite list, for various particular reasons. Thanks for the vid!

What made it even more tragic is that it was done in front his brother, Vinnie, the drummer. Nickelback wrote a song about it called "Side of a Bullet", where they used an unreleased (at the time) solo of Dimebag Darrell in the song. Very cool tribute to DD & Pantera.

I've listened to Pantera but this was my first time hearing this song. I was okay, until the guitar solo. Something about that reminded me of my youth and I couldn't deal with grief because I lost both parents at 13. That guitar solo was the anology of all the ways I acted out in protest of my reality. I been a die hard pantera fan for over 20 years, and my mom was a huge fan of pantera as well. Lately it has been hard listening to this song in particular cause it was my mom's favorite song and she passed away 7 years ago.

I was living in Grove City and was very disappointed that I didn't have a way to get to the show. You can imagine the shock of seeing the next day's Columbus Dispatch. Later, a fundraiser was held down the street for Nathan Bray, which I was able to attend. When I moved to Texas in 2012, I visited Dime's gravesite. It still seems very surreal that I could have been at the club that night. You never hear from any of the traumatized fans who were.

Somehow, there is a right time for everything, and sometimes our heart decides that now is just not it, or that the conditions are not reunited to feel safe enough to let the tears flow. I understand how frustrating and disheartening it can be though. When you face loss in particular, you would expect from yourself to somehow manifest your pain, express it, make it visible. Plus, there's the pressure of others who also expect some manifestation of pain, something tangible as otherwise they might make assumptions on how your feel or your relationship with the person you lost. It's hard when you can see yourself wanting to react a certain way, but your emotions and how you experience them is just different. You feel the pain deeply, but on the outside it's as if nothing was happening at all, making the whole experience so lonely, so isolating. I hope you know that, even if you held your feelings inside when your father passed away, it was not an expression of any kind of absence of love. Sometimes our heart *is* full of love, and because of it the pain we feel is at the measure of it... but then it's just too hard to process. Our brain has such strong ways to protect ourselves from what hurts. Numbness/shutting down emotionally can be one of those ways. It does not indicate who you are or what your heart is truly made of. Love takes so many shapes. It takes time to learn to trust others with ourselves. For some of us, it's the work of a lifetime. I've personally been on that road of learning to be vulnerable with others that I would learn to trust and see as being safe for me. But gosh, it takes so much energy to get there. Hard to navigate uncertainty, fears, discomfort when there's the possibility of others judgment to be part of the picture. When we feel vulnerable, we don't want to be hurt even more. It makes sense to keep it all in somehow and to build a whole life experience around this need to hide. It's absolutely valid. :heart: -Marie-Anne

Instant "Stank Face" every time that opening riff hits. Story of the song was something like a friend of the band's girlfriend took her life after struggling with depression. After she passed, the friend also took his life because he couldn't live without her. Screams and guitar at the end are like angry, mournful wailing.

When my brother died. I saw so much heartbreak around me I did what I always do. Bottle my emotions and try and be the healer. I felt an obligation to tend to the hearts of everyone else and forgot about mine. Purposefully, of course. I was avoiding my own trauma because the day I found out, my whole world came collapsing before my eyes. I was definitely the closest to him, we played toys together as children. I should've felt more then for sure. I was in no place to be the "strong" one. Nobody was, even the person I looked up to the most my Grandpa was in tears. The only time in my life where I saw my dad and grandfather completely broken. Funny thing is, my brother RIP introduced me to Pantera and so much music that I still love today.
