Hey, scrolled through the comments and no onehas said it so i will. In an interview Taylor said that the song is based on the relationship between Rory and Logan in gilmore girls, but in hindsight theres sooo many things in here that could be reflective of Taylor and Joe's relationship. But the way she describes the proposal is just like it plays out in Gilmore Girls.

Listening to this reminds me of the line “ I was a functioning alcoholic until no one noticed my new aesthetic” she was always out partying during the lovers era there’s even a meme and video of “drunk Taylor, and then after that is folklore and evermore which is a completely different aesthetic and sound than her previous albums. Completely different than what ppl are used to very poetic and somber.

I know everybody sees this song as a sad song, but I personally see it as a lesson, a lesson to not put pressure on the person that you want to ask to marry you, because otherwise they feel uncomfortable to say their true answer. For example, it’s like going to a football game and having the whole stadium what you propose and the other person would feel so uncomfortable that they have to say yes to either save your reputation or something. I think the lesson is basically if you’re going to engage with somebody, don’t tell everybody about it, don’t make it a massive public affair because it will make the other person feel like they can’t give an answer without being destructive.
@imjustgoofy09 Жыл бұрын
My interpretation: on the line "your hometown skeptics called it, champagne problems" as in they predicted the end of this relationship "they called it" and that speculation makes part of the whole thing that the narrator is calling champagne problems, assuming (with strong reasons) that everybody outside the relationship thinks that these are problems that are not hurtful and probably don't cause any pain, when in reality it's the other way around

Anyway, thanks for the content and for your vulnerability. I appreciate it and it makes me feel a little less lonely. Also, when she says, “Your hometown skeptics called it,” I first read it as “they called it,” as in they said it wasn’t going to last, perhaps because of the “champagne problems.” Maybe it’s because of the way she pauses before the chorus but that’s how I read it as well as the way you interpreted it.

I love this song but why don't people talk about the fact that the guy ignored all of the signs. She is being honest, she never loved him in the way he needed. Even if she says "til someone's on their knees and asks you," she also says she never took his hand while dancing, left him standing, and he ignored that. I'm thinking they were the kind of couple everyone expected and to a certain degree influenced them to be together. He took it seriously while she only went along until he proposed and that's when she just couldn't continue with it. She feels bad but she knows she did the right thing. And eventually he moved on and found someone who held his hand and stayed with him. More than the romantic relationship, to me it feels like she's mourning a friendship and a status quo. Does anyone agrees? Or did I misunderstood that part of the song.

Love the reaction. I think personally the evergreen line is more in the literal sense - they were convinced at one time that their friendships and their relationship would last forever, that it would always be as good as it once was just like an evergreen forest that stays a beautiful green all through the year. Now they both have to come to terms with the fact that they were wrong - things weren't evergreen, they were never going to last forever and now they have to deal with the loss of the friendships and relationship they thought would stay in the happy, beautiful state for the rest of their lives.

As far as this song goes, I think Taylor may struggle with an addiction to alcohol. Maybe not an every day kind of thing, but more so a binge kind of situation. I mean, there are many songs in which she mentions alcohol in an addictive manner. What do you all think about that?
@MS-bs8dd Жыл бұрын
I have no idea, wouldn’t venture to guess. I’ll only say having an alcohol addiction at some point and often in the early years but not always is so common. It’s a good saying: “I keep my side of the street clean.” Prioritize your own health / sobriety / wellness.
@sonicroll3000 Жыл бұрын
she did admit she had an alcohol problem recently so you're not wrong there.
@pele_the_phoenix Жыл бұрын
@@sonicroll3000 Oh…I actually didn’t see or hear anything about her saying that. I know she spoke up about an eating disorder she once struggled with, but I haven’t heard anything about her addressing an alcohol issue. Where/When did she disclose this? Do you have an article or video link?
@pele_the_phoenix Жыл бұрын
@sonicroll3000 She hasn’t addressed it personally, but being a big Swiftie, I’ve listened and analyzed pretty much most of her songs, and she mentions consuming alcohol, liquor, “drinks,” being drunk, and various alcoholic beverages an alarming amount of times. Before I get into it though, I have to preface this by saying I’m in no way diagnosing her. That’s not my job. But, I’ve had experience with family and friends, and it’s awfully familiar. Now, there are a couple in “1989,” but from “Reputation” through “Midnights” she makes it quite clear she likes to drink…or maybe she doesn’t “like” to drink so much as she uses drinking as a coping mechanism. And as her albums progress, it seems her penchant for not only drinking, but actually getting drunk seems to be the overall goal. I’d also add she uses references to alcohol, and drinking/being drunk in her lyrics when something unfortunate has happened to her, when she’s singing about depression, or when she needs a means to escape whatever emotions and negative thoughts she can’t or won’t process at the time feeling them or thinking about them. It seems to me that later, after she sits through an issue, uncomfortable emotion, and/or defeatist thought and becomes more settled, then she writes these lyrics in hindsight. So, from “Rep” through “Midnights” those particular words or a certain type of alcoholic beverage is referenced around 25 times give or take a couple. Also, if you haven’t already, check out the song “this is my trying,” from her “folklore album. It speaks to AND ties together all of the reasons I stated above as to why I feel she’d use alcohol as a means to check out of real life for a little while. Another example would be the “Anti-Hero” video. Plus, you can just Google it and all kinds of graphs and articles pull up. 😊

I was thinking about it the other day! So many drinks and drunk moments! I think Delicate was the first time we heard about it (you can make me a drink) and then Getaway Car (Old Fashioned) and then the entire Lover Album is full of alcohol references!

I also thought of the "your hometown skeptics called it champagne problems" as if the rejected person's hometown friends, or those who knew the couple, called it "champagne problems" because in their minds the rejection is just a typical problem in couples that'll be resolved; a bump in the road, an obstacle that in the future will be resolved and just stay as a not big of a deal in comparison to those worse problems they have. I've always interpreted this song as a woman who loved this man but who did not fit into his world, and his family and friends never completely accepted her and therefore blamed her for any issues they may have had. (IE, there's no possible reason for "a woman like her" to turn down "a man like him," so she must be even more fucked in the head than they had previously surmised.) He never had to reflect, introspect or really look at their relationship objectively, so he missed a lot of important details that led to this botched proposal.
@michelleschneider38124 ай бұрын
I have such a crazy different thought on this- hear me out. She wrote this with Joe, right. Could he have either experienced this before her with someone else (and thus why he is so commitment-shy) or could he have expressed to Taylor his deep seated fear of something like this happening to him? So, as part of some type of healing process, "they" wrote this song to speak out loud his fear of abandonment. And especially from her, as she had a public history of broken relationships. And, she might have also been scared that when the moment came that she might break his heart. After all, if he was in fact, depressed, that would be a huge consideration for her to take on as well. I don't know, to me it just sounds like such a plausible scenario that could have happened between her and Joe- even if it didn't - not hard to imagine it playing out exactly like this and that this would be his biggest fear coming true. Then he would have insisted on adding a few lyrics to de-personalize the song like making it seem like college students. Thus it is all made up- nothing to see here. I know I'm a year late to this video... but I would love to know if others thought this as well??

I never interpreted this song as the narrator having mental health issues. Rather she was in a relationship and when she was proposed to, she couldn’t imagine spending her life with that person. Only when he was proposing, she realized it’s not the right fit, he loved her more than she did, even though there was no actual definable reason to say no and nobody understood why she said no, she just wasn’t ready and she couldn’t see the relationship going this far with that particular person. Sometimes people in a relationship are in different places. One is ready, the other is not… one wants to get married, the other one wants to focus on their career and doesn’t want to move the relationship forward… and maybe the champagne problems refers to everyone else thinking that the feeling she was lacking when he proposed was a pseudo problem, a champagne problem, it wasn’t real, just a spoiled girl wanting it all… that was always my interpretation of the song anyway. She really hurt him, crushed him, but one day he will find a girl who will love him the same way, who can heal his wounds and make him forget her frivolous reasons for turning him down (or her champagne problems, if you will).

If it was the opposite, the guy leaving Taylor, the fans would have killed him.
