The band members picked how they're old selves got to die, and they are personal fears of each. Chris (with the big nose) is terrified of birds so he picked being killed by birds, same with Craig being scared of being attacked by dogs. Sid makes his living with his hands and fingers on the dj gear so losing those would be the end of who he is to himself. There's a lot behind pretty much any slipknot song and video that's so worth looking into

The song's music video was directed by Slipknot drummer Shawn Crahan and features the destruction of band members in various ways. Chris Fehn, for instance, is pecked to death by ravens, a fate he requested for himself as the percussionist suffers from a fear of birds. Sid Wilson, meanwhile, eats his arm and fingers in the clip, destroying the things most important for the DJ's role in the band.

I have something to add: Slipknot traditionally swaps masks with new ones for every album. In this case, the people who are "self-harming" in the video are their "old" themselves with the old masks, while the ones actually playing the song are the "present" themselves with a new style for the new album. Btw fire reaction, love from Italy!

Excellent interpretation! Because they end their mourning for Paul Gray after such a long time and start again. To do this, they have to leave the old behind. Symbolising the past and their former identities, they destroy the old masks.

Great interpreation, you can also see that their old and new selfs are wearing different overalls. i might not remember this correct, but the way they die in the clip has also something to do with their own fears. one of them is afraid of dogs and another of birds.

From Lisalovesfeathers: Hi Friend, it truly saddens me that anyone still has to be concerned about how they look to others when you feel depressed and I am sorry that you feel the need to smile your way through when it is the last thing you probably feel like doing. Divorce is hard, its bloody hard and you are entitled to all the emotions and feelings that go with it, of course everyone wants you to be ok but the reality is that it hurts and I hope that you know that being here at heartsupport there is no pretence, no judgement, you will be heard and supported. From Micro: I can wholeheartedly relate to what you shared about music and smiling depression. Somehow, even when you know that it's okay to reach out and safe to share how you feel, there can still be many barriers within that prevent you to do it. All of these thoughts made of self-guilt and blame that drive you to hide behind a mask, to keep up appearances as possible, because it's awfully intimidating to feel seen - not as you want to be, but as you truly are. There's something about hiding your very own vulnerability that feels safer, even though it costs so much energy and feels so vey isolating at the same time. I'm sorry you've been struggling with this inner division lately between how you feel within and what others get to see. It is amazing that you are mentioning it here though, and somehow opening that door towards how you feel, towards YOU. You absolutely deserve to have the possibility to be yourself unapologetically, to say "I need support" without any sense of guilt or shame. At the end of the day, we're all human beings trying to figure out how to navigate through this crazy thing called life. It's okay to not to be okay, and it's okay to say it. Not everyone will hear it or understand your experiences accurately, but there are people out there - and out here - who understand the depth of your struggles and will never judge you for going through a rough time. You matter, friend.

The haunted house vibe is fitting, especially with grief being so insidious, lurking in the shadows of our minds. The mutilation is indicative of how deeply it cuts to the very fibre of our being, sometimes resulting in suicidal ideation or actions. I have experienced this first hand during an especially severe depressive episode brought on by psychological and emotional abuse from my parent. This song just helps me vent when I am going through my trauma responses. Corey Taylor has been through so much pain (some self-inflicted) and that is why Slipknot is so relevant to me
@HeartSupport
@HeartSupport 9 ай бұрын
From Micro: Thank you for sharing your personal take on this, especially in light of your own story and on how it has been for you to work on these traumatic experiences. Trauma healing is such a long, exhausting road to walk on. The amount of self-awareness and understanding that you convey in your comment here are really such a strong expression of how many steps you've been taking on this very path towards processing what happened to you. I know it may seem at first like "just" commenting on a music video and relating with personal experiences, but I wanted first to really acknowledge and emphasize the work you've been doing to get to the point of naming your traumas and talking about it like here. From someone who's been on a similar journey, I know how lonely that can be, and how life consuming it is especially on darkest days to face the reality of having known repeated abuse and utmost fear as a child. The way you depict grief especially resonates so very much with me, because that's the word that has been sticking the most to my own skin when it comes to processing early childhood trauma. The grief of all what could (or even should) have been, the grief of the illusion of a family that we were holding on to for the sake of survival, the grief of all the opportunities missed because of the anxiety/depression/trauma responses that followed for years and years... the grief of a life that could have been so very different, and the impression of having lost a massive amount of time to nothing but tears. It definitely feels like a waste, but a heavy, overly-present waste - not the kind that leaves you empty. It's interesting to see it now through this haunted house depicted in the video, especially when it feels like this image could be embodied litterally/physically with the home I grew up in. Over time, the haunted house becomes this lingering shadow that you know so very well and keeps hurting you, sometimes silently, sometimes more loudly, but surely takes on your energy and hope little by little. It's a dark, uneasing place as much as traumatic memories and emotional flashbacks are. It's this damaging place that seems to stick no matter what, one full of shame and hatred... but also one that feels comforting at times. Because it's a place where at least you get to choose your pain, not to suffer one that is inflicted by others, and even less by people who *should* have been trustworthy. It's the reversal of control from being taken away your safety and dignity, to becoming the very own agent of your suffering and regain, at least, some sense of ownership. For me the haunting house is definitely this place I am pushed back into, forcefully some days, but also a place that I feel deeply connected with at other times, as if I can almost feel safe in. It's a strange paradox when what's unhealthy is what feels familiar, therefore "safe" in a kind of inadequate way. Although it's life-saving to know now where the line is, and when to draw it, so you don't end up eaten alive by this urge towards self-destruction either. It's present, but it leaves room to *feel* things from the heart, and to *know* with the mind what is fair or not - and self-inflicted pain, on top of what has already been endured, is not something that one would ever deserve to know. You survived through it all, and you are here today using your voice like a new power. I know it usually feels like being strong isn't something wanted when it comes to trauma healing, but rest assured that the strength you've developped and shared through your journey are YOURS. The fruit of your willingness, of your heart, of this unique voice that you now get to share, not within the haunted house, but in a house that you own and have been building from your own sweat, tears, and the recognition of your worth. You are standing still, and that may be the most beautiful way to chase the ghosts away. Hold fast, friend.

"You should have burned, when you turned on everyone." Corey Taylor, the singer and principle lyricist for Slipknot is an absolute otherworldly lyricist. I worked at an infamous rock club in Detroit from 1998-2003 and got to spend a lot of time with Corey and he's an absolute smart as hell guy, he's witty and fast as hl with jokes, comebacks, etc. He also has the Guinness world record for the widest vocal range. A large percentage of hard rock and metal fans are adamant that Corey also has the undisputed best scream by far, out of all singers, past and present. His scream is also insanely difficult for even seasoned professional singers and even vocal coaches to mimic.The only other personal I know of who has an almost demonic scream and could hold his own on Broadway is Aaron Lewis. I saw him in North Carolina 2 months ago and he was showing me a bunch of new guitars he has and he sadly started smoking again! Because music usually uses metaphors, it helps me explain how how i feel, because using metaphors is easier than being practical, IMO. Because feelings are usually not cut and dry, sometimes they're more complex than that and music and art in general helps explain it. Especially, with artists like Slipknot, who are very creative and visual in how they write their lyrics.

I get the analysis, and I'm here for it, but talking over the lyrics means you miss a good portion of the meaning and things that fit in the analysis. Maybe verse by verse or a notepad to hit the salient points after.

I'm not your devil anymore. That means, to me, my antagonists can't blame me for everything that is wrong. I am sober and even when I wasn't I was honest to my people. Never to myself, but I still managed to take care of everyone and everything. Now there is no addiction shadowing my every step, so my devil is exercised which means I am no one's devil.

"metal music is the devil" .... I have listened to rock and metal my whole life and more often than not its a powerful message.. from Run to the hills By Iron Maiden, to Master of Puppets by Metallica, Slipknots the Devil in I.... so much power behind the lyrics weather the band wants your mind to wander or you have a definitive meaning.. I love the passion put into the music

This is exactly describing my aha moment during therapy, I was around 40 and I had no idea what was the cause for - lets call it - my weirdness sometimes. Once we dug it up and discovered it, I was able to recognize it and understand the mechanism and by doing so the issue was controllable, not to say gone forever. The mind is a complicated beast.

Corey said the concept for this song was killing off the band. Slipknot was very self destructive like most successful bands tend to get. SO this was symbolically killing off the old Slipknot so the new healthier one could live. The Devil in i was actually a saying from the United States First Serial killer H.H. Holmes.

@heartsupport, I think this actually has 2 meanings. The one you created yes, but ALSO: its like “how bad I can be?”. Why am I so bad you don’t even want to love me? Basically like the metal version of How bad can I be from the Lorax

Are you familiar with Jungian psychology? Shadow work? Beyond facing our shadow ("devil") we benefit from realising its actually a part of us, and some of its traits, are good. Anger? Some things SHOULD make you angry, its just what you do with that anger. Violence? If you or your loved ones are in danger and diolomacy and running has failled, hell yes should you be violent. Heres my personal one, Sadism (and masochism but thats less socially frowned upon). Thats a hard one right, enjoying pain, thats just bad right? And if its not tempered by empathy, ethics, and a wholehearted desire for good, yes it absoloutly is bad. But im in a job that sometimes requires altercation. I'm a bouncer. I'm a bouncer because I want to keep people safe, and I have saved people from awful shit, by either psychologically manipulating the perpetrator, or by not being affraid to jump in to physically intervene. A normal person is either going to get so angry they make mistakes, or be too soft on the perp, I'm serene and in my element and yes, having fun. They consented to playing with me as soon as they spike that 21 year old, or molest someone, or harm someone. I have made peace with my shadow self.

To me, it's about finally getting out of a toxic relationship/friendship. Realizing you're not the actual problem. Not their devil anymore. Just my take.

I love the channel, the life and energy that's so present here. However, you got this one wrong. It's about the end of a toxic relationship. It's a reference to being blamed for everything that has gone wrong in the other person's life, being that person's "devil." Saying, I'm not going to be your punching bag anymore! By the way, this is how I really feel... This is the real devil inside me and it's much much uglier than you can even imagine. Saying the things that you've held in because you wanted to keep the peace. Some things, once spoken, can't be taken back. And you won't hold onto it anymore. You want to blame me and hate me, fine but you have to hear the rage I've hidden for years. Keep up the Good work. You've given me lots to think about. There was one video that you literally had me in tears with the power and message. Keep going!

I’m sooooo very hoping you’re reading the lyrics to the song you’re really wanting to know what the group is wanting to get across to the humans that are hearing this type of music because people who don’t give this very well worded deep message that’s being arranged in a way it almost gets you to force yourself to use a lot of cognition to come to your own conclusion of what this amazing arrangement of sounds and the intrapersonal likelihood you take away from all music by Slipknot

Wait until she hears Alice in Chains. For me metal has always been about coping with all the shit in your head and all the bad shit you feel. Being real about the things hiding in all the nooks. And I think the music is a way to share what you have felt. Too often it's labeled something scary, though it's misunderstood. I think she should analyze the lyrics more.
