One of the things keto does is lead too more butyrate. If you find keto hard you could make it easier with all sorts of smart things. Take mct oil in morning and diner and then your aloud some more carbs. Measure with ketodevice. Take effort too cook delicious, probably make lots and freeze it. Take the fibers associated with good microbiome and so you also get butyrate : pectin, patato starch , rice bran, PHGG, beta glucans. The fibers are win win because you also feel more full. Dont take keto friendly highly processed stuff and maybe stay away from the sweeteners or only allulose/stevia. If its still very difficult, start for 2 months on low carb and ease your way into it, in the meanwhile the fibers will give you more butyrate and the mct oil will also give some benefits. I gave you my most succesfull tips, in just a few sentences.

I struggled with "mental health" issues for pretty much my entire life. 6 months ago i went carnivore, and it changed my entire existence. The root of the issue, in my opinion, is this separation of "health" and "mental health" in society. Like there is this magical thing called mental health that can be treated on its own through medication and talking over and over about ones problems. When the body is unhealthy, every thought, every belief, every action is filtered through this sick body. Eating what my body was designed to eat stripped away the sickness, and what im left with is a properly functioning body and mind (the 2 are not separate)
@FrogmortonHotchkissАй бұрын
Sure, but sometimes it IS about dysfunctions in thought and not the body at all. That can still happen without creating an artificial body-mind separation. Just like how a rash can have a mental cause, but a broken leg doesn't have any mental cause. Similarly, not all mental-health issues are metabolic or neurological in origin. It can be hard to find out what best applies in an individual case.

(your advice on what to avoid is a good start)
@bloomhavenstudiosАй бұрын
@@Missramy100 Happy to help. (This will be a long comment. :-) ) I agree that keto advice and recipes on the internet is overwhelming and confusing. Here's what worked for me. Start by spending a couple weeks (or as long as you need) gradually reducing the amount of carbs you eat, and (unless you have non-keto family members) get all the carbs out of the house. Use this time to test some keto recipes. Look for 2-3 keto recipes for each meal (breakfast/lunch/supper). Pick recipes that you think you'll enjoy. (I'll give meal ideas in a separate comment.) Stock your kitchen with the ingredients for those recipes. Then, rotate those recipes. Keep it simple. If you want more variety, add one new recipe every week or two. As you get used to eating this way, it will become easier and you will become more flexible in your cooking. If you struggle to get enough fat, try making fat bombs. Again, pick two or three recipes. Choose savory ones, because to succeed on keto it is important to lose your taste for sweets. Stay away from keto desserts. Don't snack. As your body adapts to burning fat, it will start to burn your body fat. If weight loss is your goal, you can stop the fat bombs. You'll know you don't need them when you don't feel hungry. If you don't want to lose weight, you may need to pay closer attention to getting enough fat. Eventually you may naturally start intermittent fasting because you just won't feel hungry. It is easy to get all the calories and nutrients you need in one or two meals a day, and then you won't even think about food much. It's very freeing. Track your macros. It's a pain, but it will help you know where you need to tweak things. Find a good app. I used Cronometer.

@missramy100 Part 2 - Keto meal suggestions: Breakfast: scrambled eggs with bacon, avocado with tuna, chia pudding (1/4 cup chia seeds soaked in 1 can of coconut milk. Add nuts, cacao nibs, or other flavouring if you like.) Lunch: Salad with protein (tuna, chicken). Sprinkle with a mix of seeds (sesame, pumpkin, sunflower, almonds). I like it with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and blue cheese dressing). Lettuce roll-ups - This is a good replacement for sandwiches. I love BLT rollups. These lunch suggestions are portable if you need to eat lunch at work. If you eat out, get a salad with protein, or grilled meat and ask for extra veggies instead of rice/pasta/potato. Supper: Vegetable, meat, sauce. Pork chops or ground beef cooked in mushroom cream sauce, eat with cooked shredded cabbage or cauliflower rice. Broccoli and chicken with cheese sauce. Shrimp and asparagus with coconut-based curry sauce. Make your own combinations with the veggies and meats that you like (but stick to low-starch veggies), You can find other ideas online. This approach to meals makes it easier if you also have to cook for non-keto family members because you can add a carb for them, and you're not cooking something completely different for yourself. Think of vegetables as your carb. I've put spaghetti sauce on cabbage and my curry over cauliflower rice. Avocado makes a good side for any meal. Add a fat bomb if you need to boost the fat content. Sprinkle nuts and seeds on your meals if you like that. If you have to pause keto for a vacation or special event, enjoy without guilt, but at the same time keep your choices as low-carb as is reasonable and especially avoid desserts if you can. That will make it easier to resume keto once you're back to your normal routine. Once you experience the mental clarity and increased energy that come with keto, you'll prefer to avoid the foods that cloud your mind and sap your energy.

Super emotional when I saw the thumbnail to this video after following your channel since 2020! We learned about metabolic interventions a few years ago while caring for my mother who was hospitalized and diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. Implementing a ketogenic diet among other lifestyle changes regarding sleep, etc. she lost 100 lbs, reversed her type 2 diabetes and was able to reduce her medication to the smallest amount of Lithium that wasn't even considered therapeutic. We also learned during this process that if you don't put boundaries on the toxic relationships in your life, it didn't matter how perfect her diet and routines were, she experienced another psychotic episode after months of stress caused by the narcissistic/emotional abuse from family members. We began watching your video hoping to learn how to manage these relationships better and heal, so thank you for your content and for spreading awareness about Dr. Christopher Palmer's research, Lauren's experience and of your friend. After almost 2 years of my mother being with her family, she is now back under our care and seeing for a second time the immediate positive effects of a low carb diet. We don't track proportions, we just eat low carb veggies mainly in salads or soup, we don't skimp on healthy fats when cooking, and have fat for breaking our intermittent fasts in a cacao drink we make. This time around we aren't measuring ketones as mucho, just eating low carb and we're still experiences all of the benefits as last time. I think you need to track more/ ensure you're getting enough fat when you aren't over-weight with lots of fat stored, since your body can't pull from there. Anywho, thank you for spreading hope!!

All organic ingredients mostly from Costco! We’ll also have a few walnuts, pumpkin seeds, olive oil and nutritional yeast on the side. All the best on your journey!

Universes colliding! I'm so happy to see you reporting on this :) I started following a ketogenic way of eating several months ago (a rather radical one: carnivore) and can attest this has _absolutely_ improved my mental health, as well as physical health. Since your channel is about the mental side of it though, I'll just focus there: Carnivore has lifted the oppression of depression and anxiety/paranoia from me, has made me both more alert and more calm, I feel more capable of navigating possible confrontation (rather than catastrophizing and shrinking from the possibility). When I wake up in the morning now, I actually wake up. Versus feel tired and heavy and glum and like I don't want to get out of bed. When someone asks me how I am now, I can honestly say "good," instead of spiralling internally with how to say something that is technically true but not depressing and anti-social. Bonus: I also lost a lot of fat and many inches around my waist while retaining muscle; my skin amazingly improved; _my eyesight improved_ according to my optometrist; my temperature regulation improved; my menstrual cramps went away. And because I'm eating zero plants and such low carbohydrates (again, I'm not just keto but carnivore: so my only carbs come from the tiny amounts in eggs and cheese), my gut microbiome has adapted and I have _zero_ cravings for any plants, so it isn't even tempting to eat something that would kick me out of ketosis. I can _easily_ sit across the table from someone eating a freshly baked slice of bread with a glass of wine, and I'm not remotely tempted; the smell is just like perfume to me now, and doesn't trigger the desire to eat what I smell. As to your question about fibre etc, I get it! :) But there are answer out there as to why humans (who eat enough fat) don't actually need fibre, and I can personally attest that my digestion keeps moving just fine on carnivore, with not even an herb of plant on my meat. The low-carb/zero-carb community has amazing educational resources with so many doctors from so many specialties now, and they're great for giving answers to the common concerns that all of us have when first hearing about nutritional ideas that are so the opposite of what we were taught all our lives. The 'Low Carb Down Under' KZbin channel, which hosts video recordings of low carb conference speakers, most of whom are doctors and experts in their fields, is a good way to scan for topics/professionals in this sphere, then many of them have their own websites and KZbin channels where you can learn more than just whatever 30-minute presentation they were asked to put on at those conferences.

I caution anyone who is considering doing Keto to be very careful. I did this for two years, eating a Paleo version of Keto-EXTREMELY healthy food. It did help with my treatment-resistant depression, but I wound up with debilitating anxiety and adrenal problems. I also developed insomnia, orthorexia, hormonal problems, depressed thyroid function, muscle pain, muscle wasting, and my legs were covered in mysterious bruises (that I later found out was internal bleeding). And despite the low carbohydrate nature, my blood sugar wasn’t great, especially in the morning. (It’s much better now that I’m no longer doing low carb/keto.) It took me YEARS to mostly-recover from doing keto, but I’m still not back to where I was before. (What I wouldn’t give to be able to sleep like I used to 😢) And no, I didn’t do it “wrong.” I’ve had people suggest that, but they couldn’t find any fault when I showed them my food logs from that time. I was eating crazy healthy-on paper. It just wasn’t good for my body. And it’s not good for A LOT of people’s bodies. Once I got away from that mindset and community, I found a ton of people who had the same experience I did, and I learned a lot more about how the body works (things that keto proponents either don’t know or choose to ignore). It’s extremely stressful for the body to go through gluconeogenesis (how your body makes glucose when you don’t eat enough carbs), and it releases adrenaline every time it does this, which will leave you feeling great for about six months or so, while you’re riding that high; after a while the constant adrenaline release starts to wear on your body, especially your adrenals. It’s extraordinarily stressful, and I don’t recommend it to anyone. If you’ve absolutely tried everything else, and your life is being debilitated by schizophrenia or migraines or something, then sure, it’s worth a shot, as long as you’re being medically supervised. I’m not here to say it’s never the right choice or tell anyone else what’s right for them. I just want to warn people about what can happen, so they can make a slightly more informed choice (or at least keep an eye out for things that might go wrong). I always suggest trying a healthy diet first (and I mean healthy-healthy, real whole foods and very little processed anything). Eating healthy and exercising makes a DRASTIC difference in my mental health. Also, eating enough makes a big difference. Restricting and counting calories can also affect mitochondrial health, affecting energy output and neurological function. So can not getting enough of certain nutrients. Makes sure you’re getting (and absorbing) all the nutrients your body needs. Keep in mind that just because you eat something doesn’t mean your body can utilize it. (Certain medications can deplete certain vitamins and minerals or prevent them from being absorbed. Your gut health can affect what you’re absorbing too. And some sources of nutrients aren’t as easily assimilated as others.) On top of that, light therapy, sunlight, near infrared, far infrared and avoiding blue lights at night have all helped me. I also meditate and do vagal nerve stuff every day. (And avoid social media and KZbin. 😂 I know I’m on here right now, but I try to only come on here once a day.) Dopamine addiction is wild 😅 and it can make depression and anxiety much worse. Take care of yourselves, everybody ☮️ Compassion works wonders.

In many respects, I agree with your caution - most people moving to a keto diet are following "fad" information online. Therapeutic ketosis is different and really needs to be guided by a practitioner who knows the ins and outs and how to help a person monitor their journey appropriately. There are many roads to Rome - a ketogenic way of eating can look different in every person on this path. Monitoring glucose and ketones is key, but also monitoring many other lab markers!

That was extremely helpful. Not all diets are for everyone. For instance, if you dont have a functional gall bladder or dysmotility of the bile duct the fat diet will kill you instantly (not literally) and will create more issues than before. Let's refrain from suggesting keto diet as a blanket diet for mental health issues.

I had heard about keto fixing migraines. I tried it for several months and it didn’t have any effect at all on my debilitating migraines. If anything, maybe they got a little worse? Not sure if it was the keto that made it worse. But my body did feel better though. I lost a lot of weight. It was just so hard to maintain. No one else I know eats this way. My husband and kids don’t. So I was having to eat completely separately. So I’ve gotten off keto. No change in migraine frequency going off keto. This is just my experience. I do appreciate the info you have shared here.

I've been eating keto since 2015. There can be a ton of fiber and nutrients eating this way, just make sure you're eating vegetables. It's as simple as that. Veggies that grow above ground are lower in sugar and won't interfere with carbohydrate restriction.
@raraavis7782Ай бұрын
I've actually found, that I eat much more vegetables now. I mean, what else is there? Just meat and eggs is terribly boring and anything starchy or sweet is off the table. I eat plenty of vegetables or salad stuff with basically every meal now, because I can't just make a sandwich or eat some cereal.

It is SOO refreshing to see someone in the mental health field being open to change and going with new approaches because they believe it may be whats best for some people, rather than dismissing it because there's limited research or because it might help some people decrease or get off of their medications. Much respect, thank you for sharing this with your community!

I ate strictly keto for over ten years and I didn't want to admit to myself how bad I'd gotten - I felt weak, lost my period, became afraid of foods, feared going to social events, was cold... I've been on the keto diet for one full year, trying to heal my protracted withdrawal syndrome and to get help with underlying depression. And it's helped me a ton. It has not cured me by any stretch, but, it has helped my brain function and.... one unexpected change has happened: my psoriatic arthritis went into full remission. I don't know if it's because of the diet or what, but it happened at exactly the same time as when I switched to keto. I'm so grateful. I believe the people who say it's changed their mental health. It has changed mine. I haven't been cured from my withdrawal injury, but overall, I'm so much healthier. My blood levels are great (hdl/ldl, triglycerides, etc), I can run four miles in 40 minutes, and I exercise daily. It sounds so weird and counterintuitive, but I'm living with the benefits of this diet. I think we should keep studying it and finding out what's doing what. Thanks for sharing!

So happy to hear the importance of metabolic health being shared! I’ve known about this for over six years now. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and put it into remission in 3 months without medication and have maintained this for 6 years. My husband joined me for support and we’ve both seen so many benefits neither of us will ever go back to any other way of eating. We both lost a significant amount of weight, improved our energy and our mental clarity, my husband’s constant headaches disappeared and my bowels are finally functioning well. And no, you don’t need all that fibre they tell you you need. In fact, I find consuming some vegetables and high fibre foods constipate me. Dr. Georgia Edes’ book Change Your Diet Change Your Mind is a wonderful resource on how low carb eating affects the brain.
@369142857Ай бұрын
I did a modified form of keto where I kept my "net carbs" (total carbs minus fiber) under 50 grams per day so that I was still consuming most vegetables except root veggies. I even ate berries sometimes as a treat. I also ate as much fat as I wanted but did not force myself to eat any more than that to try and hit some target amount. My mental health improved along with my digestive issues.

My former stepdaughter was on the medical keto diet for intractable seizure disorder in 1994 or so. I had to measure the food quite precisely and I've often been skeptical about folks talking about their 'keto diet' (because what they eat seems a whole lot less strict than what she was allowed.) When she ate exactly as Johns Hopkins medical team specified, she was seizure free. When folks thought she was being denied 'the good things in life' and sneak her a cookie or some such thing, she could very well land in the hospital. It never occurred to me that maybe it could help me with severe OCD.

I will give you my personal truth-good and bad. I've been keto about six months-for depression and controlling hypertension. It makes me feel much healthier. Major physical improvements-skin, body fat, long running steady energy, low appetite/food noise. Great for calm and anxiety. Blood pressure is better. Not as hard to adjust to as I thought-helps if you can cook! Lots of subs for things not on diet-don't feel deprived. Jury is out a bit for me on depression. I do miss the sugar buzz sometimes. I'm not so much up as "predictably even and never down". Aerobic exercise, extra fat and electrolytes do help this do it may get better in future. But I can wait because its better than where I was!

So awesome that this is being discussed! Eating in a way that allows a person to experience and live in ketosis is such a powerful tool and is different for each person. It is not just about eating fat. Doing it properly goes so much deeper and is more about keeping glucose low and ketones in a therapeutic range and there are many ways to do this. Just a note on the comment about restricting foods / carbs and not getting enough fiber - we can indeed very easily get plenty of fiber on a ketogenic diet. The carb restriction is about simple and processed carbs. We eat a ton of veggies - loaded with olive oil, butter, MCT, ghee, or other fat appropriate for the person! We do limit fruits - or even eliminate them if they spike glucose. And we focus on eating REAL FOOD. Such a wonderful way to balance metabolism AND the microbiome!

A more helpful video would be HOW to stick to such a diet. I’ve known this for years and have yet to be able to stay on it, despite having pretty severe depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation and possibly bipolar. I KNOW it helps better than any medication I’ve tried. But there’s already so little to enjoy about life and I actually ENJOY food. So what happens when it feels like you’re taking away the last thing left that you find enjoyable? Nobody talks about that.
@JvdB_NLАй бұрын
The ideal would be to find something else to enjoy. Something to do with exercise, something social, or something creative. Maybe forget diet for now if it's too hard. You'll never be able to change your diet if its the only coping mechanism you have, you need different things to replace it first. And don't be too hard on yourself.. Change is hard. And you know, sometimes all you can do is try to get through the moment and that's enough.

I find getting settled into it and the transition phase to be way harder than actually sticking with it once youre going. The only advise i have for people starting out is to eat as much as you want as long s its not carbs. If you want a pound of bacon in the first few days then ea tthe pound of bacon. whatever tf keeps you from putting carbs in your mouth. Big fat breakfast. Mine was always bacon and eggs. The rest of the day is far easier to deal with from there. Dont just take away the carbs. focus on adding in the fat and getting more foods onto the list of yes items rather than fussing over what to do now that you have what feels like a lot of no items. you have to completely change your internal way of eating....so stuff your face with yes foods until your body isnt scrounging for sugar and itll be way easier.
@moniquebrok676321 күн бұрын
I did keto a couple of times and also vegan. What helped me is starting with one meal a day. So first I get my breakfast in check. I also add a lot of veggies (spinach, cucumber, courgette) to my shake, add a clean proteinshake, mct oil and some extra herbs (holy basil and reishi for me has been helpfull). That is my breakfast most days and I switch during the weekend because I have more time. When breakfast has become a habit for me, I start to look at lunch: what can I take to work with me, what do I like? So sometimes I make a salad with a fat based dressing (olive oil for instance) or add avocado, olives, nuts, seeds, ect and protein in there (non vegan can add a ton of chicken, turkey, ect) and alot of greens (you can find info online of what vegetables are keto friendly). You can also look into soups, or ‘lunch boxes’, with veggies and dips, nuts ect. If you’re feeling fancy, there are alot of options for making your own keto friendly bread, especially if you eat eggs. So what I do is making a transition per meal. Also, I didn’t really count net carbs in the beginning, just transitions form a carb based diet to a fat based diet is already a big step. After I got breakfast and lunch in check, I started counting carbs, and made a plan to keep my net carbs in check, taking into account my dinners. There are alot of subsistute foods, and you can make it really easy, but I personally would advice a clean keto diet (dirty keto is simple, with a lot of substitute foods and bad fats). It makes it more likely that you will feel better if you do it clean.

I have been keto for nearly 6 years. I didn't have a diagnosis but I looked into the research and I was pretty convinced that it would help me feel better and prevent many health issues down the line. When our body runs more on ketones, we have more sustained energy and mental clarity throughout the day, which is a huge win. There are variants of keto so if you are doing this for general health benefits, I'd recommend the wealth of information that Dr Berry and Dr Mindy have on KZbin and in books. Especially for women, there are ways to optimise keto while healing and maintaining healthy hormones. I won't ever go back to the western diet because I feel so much better and it's a no brainer for me. If I had a condition which inhibited me then it would be even more the case.

The body works differently when in ketosis. The high fat is then NO problem, but only if - you are actually in ketosis, as measured by a keto measuring device (finger pricking) - your omega 6 to 3 balance is good: a 4:1 ratio is recommended, so 4x the amount of fats like from cheese (omega 6s) as fish like salmon (omega 3). More omega 3 in this ratio is also good, just not less.

I have been keto/ketovore for 5 1/2 years. My OCD - which was debilitating - is largely gone.

I’m not a doctor, but my understanding was not that keto is low fiber. If anything, high fiber is encouraged as long as net carbs are relatively low. Loved this video and can’t wait to hear more about the subject as more studies come out. Thanks for your efforts to put helpful content out here for us!!

Keto has helped my depression and anxiety a lot. I seem to process things more logically now and am less prone to emotional instability. My mood is more even through the day. I sleep better. Life isn’t perfect - but is definitely much better! Thanks for making this video ❤
