Police were at fault, but mostly for not having some sort of contingency plan to deal with this kind of event. They were obviously outnumbered but their desperate strategy to try to scare people from rioting, backfired badly. The lack of emergency evacuation plan was disastrous. Obviously more interested in keeping non ticket holders out than in the safety of the legit spectators. Illness, terrorism or fire might have required a swift exit for a few or many.

For some reason I've always remembered this event, even though I was only 10 years old when it happened. I didn't remember, however, that the exits were all sealed shut when thousands of people in a panic tried to get out. There were a few building fires in past times when fire exits either had to be pulled inwards, or had been blocked or locked by the management. Nasty stuff. One time a handyman happened to be passing with his tools, and removed the whole door to releive the crush behind it. But that kind of luck is hardly common..

The fault lies with those who let their emotions run wild. Not just run wild but to do so over a game.
@seanbriscoe6804
@seanbriscoe6804 Жыл бұрын
Exactly....it shows where ones heart is. A person or persons will value a game over a life. What the police did to the man in the field was wrong but to let ones emotions dictate punishment and blame is wrong. Then the rioters went in the streets and did more damage. Whether this,the Watts riots or los angeles riots it's wrong period. It's understandable to be angry but when you put your emotions above common sense and logic and doing what's right its always a disaster. How many lives were lost because of people's emotions. If the referee was wrong then he was wrong and deal with it in a proper manner. But when one gets angry because of a referee's decision and you act on it violently your wrong. It's usually emotions that get one in trouble or worse... Dead!

Man is a peculiar beast, his psychology is of an emotional make-up and it manifests itself in polar opposites, both good and bad. In this instance, two dozen men are kicking a ball around a lawn and results in a massive loss of life, whatever the reason or excuse it is totally illogical. There are those that instigate the ensuing violence within the crowd and then there are those who do the same as representatives of the local authorities. Sadly, many innocent people are caught up in the melee and the same thing is still happening in other arenas today. Until we evolve to a higher level we will remain like this.

No offence, I totally agree with that needs to evolve. But seriously I don’t understand the rest of what you are saying. Yeah I know Man is a duel beast with a massive dichotomy between good/bad etc etc, but it was a useless/corrupt referee coupled with a police force that handled a public situation in the most stupid way considering the heightened atmosphere after the dis-allowed goal. The authorities crammed them all into the stadium to make as much money as possible from them, and didn’t care that there might be unrest if actions were perceived as corrupt. It seems to me to be one of those situations where corrupt people keep doing what they want, not caring about how it looks because they are making money and have the police to bully anyone who disagrees. It gets me that the referee was one of the first people off the pitch when things escalated, what a man. I hope he was haunted by this for the rest of his life, and I hope the same for the police officers that beat up that man partly leading to this mess. There’s no big good/evil theme here, just a load of pissed off football fans reacting to being screwed over. If you want to talk about psychology, maybe you should talk about herd mentality and what happens when you stick a load of people in a stadium together and then antagonise them by screwing them over, That’s an interesting psychological conundrum. I don’t mean to be rude to you it just seems like a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. Just plain old garden variety corruption that blew up in the corrupters face again, and my heart goes out to the victims of this tragedy, victims of arrogance, stupidity and avarice.

Sadly we never learn from the past. Another tragedy happened a few days ago with more than 125 people including children killed (some sources say it is more than 200). Incompetence of league operator who insisted the match to be played at night (though police through match officials have suggested to move the match earlier at noon). Incompetence of match official who sold 42.000 tickets though the stadium capacity only 38.000. And police who threw tear gas to the people in the stand, 2 police who helped people to evacuate passed away caused by hypoxia.

I don't see how the words "Football match" and "death" should ever be in the same sentence. It's a game! It's entertainment. It is not an excuse for people to become violent. There should never be violence at any event. Let alone a simple game. This kind of behaviour is solely on the shoulders of those who participated. The outcome is their fault entirely. I don't think I've ever heard of this terrible tragedy before, so thanks for making this video. I'm not saying that the ref robbed Peru of their goal as I've never seen the footage of the incident, but for what I know, if I'd have been a Peruvian at that match then I wouldn't have been happy at the fact that a Uruguayan ref was in charge of their big match V Argentina ! It's unsurprising to me that a Uruguayan ref would disallow the goal. To give a rough idea in todays terms, it's a bit like if Man United were playing Everton last game of the season. United need a win to win the league, and Everton just need to draw to win the league. After 89 minutes it's 0-0 and United score......Now the ref is the kind of Liverpool fan that supports Merseyside really, and hates United. So he disallows the goal, and blows for full time straight afterwards. Sorry but that's about as good as I can use that analogy 👍
@FoxSullivan
@FoxSullivan 11 ай бұрын
I can understand your reasoning but, at the time, there were no harsh feelings between the countries involved, to justify this. The harsh feelings were in between Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina as a group, due to the saltpeter war that happened at the end of the 19th century, and between Bolivia and Uruguay, that had a war during the Cold War. There's no reason for a Uruguayan to be biased against Peru. That being said, soccer is a huge thing in South America, to the point that even today, there are riots whenever 2 specific teams play in national leagues. In fact, a friend of mine got murdered for being a passerby when a riot happened; even though he wasn't part of it.

these soccer games....that's what us in the U.S. call it....anyway , can be brutal. These fans really take their football seriously. This is far from being the only riot that I have heard of involving fans being disgruntled at the decision's made by officials. Even though this riot wasn't neccesarily over a call....it was the motivating factor that caused the fan to argue with the referee....and his treatment by the police escalated the incident. But you almost never see this at Baseball or Football games in the States. I'm not sure why because we take our sports very seriously just like these fans. Anyway, it is ridiculous how the police went about treating that particular fan who was merely arguing over a call.

I was thinking the same thing. NFL here on YT uploaded a video called "Most Bitter Rivalries of All Time" and those rivalries pale compared to the rivalries of soccer/football fans around the world. I've never heard of a baseball, basketball or US football riot anywhere at any level; for most fans the decision has been made on the field and the attitude is "wait 'til next time" although I'm sure there've been plenty of sports bars fist fights over the years.

@@indy_go_blue6048 you're absolutely right. All we really get are some loud chanting from the fans or some material items thrown out into the field. Of course there's always the occasional nut job who runs out on the playing field and is chased by the security and officials lol. But that's more comic relief than anything to the contrary. If anything I would say hockey is the most turbulent of sorts, but not fan based. It's the players themselves getting into first fights. I'm not even well versed on the parcel of different sports at the professional level in other countries. All I really know is soccer is huge in lots of other countries. But I can't comment on anything else. I'm saying, does European countries have baseball teams and basketball teams like in the U.S. that compete in similar fashion ? Like with the playoffs and then the world series, so to speak. Or like Super Bowl Sunday? My god....that's like practically a National Holiday here in the States. Anyway, if anyone is versed on this subject matter as to level of sports teams and types in Asia or European countries or South American countries, please leave me a little tid bit of information on the subject. Though in Balkan states basketball is also really popular with fans pretty similar to the soccer ones. Greece is one of those I can think of. Soccer also got similar playoffs as super bowl and different competitions. Don’t know much about basketball though.

It's this simple: "soccer" is for the working classes, at least it as 20 years ago, and it still is today. Young men, and now a lot of women, who love their club. A much larger percentage of those spectating sports in America are middle class families. Loving a soccer club is loving your town, loving your community, loving your history. Loving an NFL team is like loving Coca-Cola or Hershey's. They're just brands that have effective monopoly on their markets. No matter how poorly an NFL team performs, it will always be an NFL team. It will always get a cut of TV money. In soccer, if you switch off for four seasons as an owner you can go from $300 million dollar turn over to $2 million dollar turn over. When someone cheers for the Steelers, they're really just cheering for the bank balance of the Franchise majority shareholder. Cause next year the Steelers could move city, and there's not much the fans could do about it as far as I know.

In other words, just like the “Dancing on Ice” disaster and many other tragic events, nobody was actually held accountable and the only two people punished was the inquiry judge who was fined for not attending all the autopsy’s, and the police chief who ordered the tear gas/shooting. how ironic that the real culprits for causing so much death,injury and despair got away Scott free, and again ironically, the one person who I did not hear mentioned by the authorities as the instigator of the events……the referee, was there all along to be used as a scapegoat for disallowing the equaliser, and as you didn’t mention if the “goal” was reviewed by anyone to see if it was a “bad” decision or investigate whether the ref was bribed or coerced into “fixing” the result I can’t decide who is worse, the ref, the first pitch invader, the police (on multiple levels) the rioters in the stands and on the pitch, the stadium management for locking the exit gates, the police and rioters outside the stadium, the politicians, or the Peruvian people for just wanting to brush it all under the carpet.

Strange laughter. No VIR or whatever back then either. Guess we'll never know if it was a good or bad call. I share an anecdote from professional baseball. The runner arrived at the base before the ball, but the umpire called him 'out'. The runner complained and told the umpire, "I was safe". The umpire replied, "I know, but 75,000 people just saw me call you out - so you're out...I'm so sorry - goodbye" that's just how it was in those days. It added another factor of uncertainty to all sports.

When the fans that were staying seated in their seats in stands were being tear gassed though, it just human nature to want to run away from tear gas. Did the police commander who ordered tear gas to be thrown into the stands know that the exit way gates were closed?

This one is so incredibly frustrating. Police needlessly beating a man, sports fanatics acting like losing a game is the end of the damn world... IT'S JUST A GAME. I will never understand this kind of behavior, especially about a damn game. At least if there was rioting over human rights abuses, injustices or political corruption, it could be somehwat understandable. But a stupid damn game? People seriously need to adjust their priorities.

I take issue with the title - it doesn't sound like anybody died because of rioting in the stadium. People died because the police gassed the crowd thus triggering a stampede for the exit tunnels. That would have been bad enough if the shutters were open, but when the shutters were closed it is tantamount to murder, which is probably why the police came under attack afterwards. This does have to be seen in the context of the political culture of state repression and police violence that characterised Peru at the time. Interestingly enough the danger of having exit gates that open inwards was underlined in this incident and is one of the reasons why, at Hillsborough, stewards were not officially allowed to close the gates leading to the central pens once the central pens were full. In the FA Cup semi-finals in the years leading up to 1989 a practice had developed where one of the two gates leading to the central pens would be closed as a way of indicating to fans coming in that they shouldn't go that way, but the practice wasn't officially allowed because it was understood that, in the event of a stampede for the exit, the crowd would surge against the closed gate which would prevent anyone opening it. With a new and inexperienced match day commander in 1989 the rules were enforced strictly and the gates leading to the central pens remained open, which contributed to the overcrowding and the subsequent crush occurring in the central pens. You wouldn't think it would be too difficult to make exit gates that open outwards, would you?
