I got a OG blackjack 26 that I saved my money up for when i was younger and i remember the first time i chsrged a battery i totally blew it up !! I put electric tape over the bottom and I had to have the hobby store owner set the charger manualy for me to the correct batteries i had. He gave me 2 new batteries no charge and off i was boating in my local lake. Anyways. Jump to today when i have a son and want to bring him into the RC world and get him outta the house !! @@TheRcSaylors yes I found the 2200? I was looking up smart batteries in 3s . Smart batteries are about 1/3 longer it seems to get close to the mah I have a v1200 coming ,:) as fast as I can get it lol . have you had any issues in smart batteries length in some of your perhaps older BFM models ? I’ve been studying and measuring some of my older planes the smart batteries length / tad thicker might be issue ? I also fly helicopters I’ll have to stay with my current batteries / charging system there . But yeah for Bind in fly models I can see where the smart Technology be cool to use liked you shared , no thinking about it . Any thought on the 10NX ? Back order if want it . No issues at all with size of batteries, so far! Lucky for us, airplanes are usually very forgiving with their battery compartments and provide ample space for larger batteries. No all are this way of course, but many are. Regarding the NX10, I'd go with the NX8 for best bang for your buck. If you can swing it, yeah get the 10! Updating via wifi is worth it alone in my opinion. Also, you can transfer all of your old information from your old radio to your new one ;-) If you don't mind, please consider ordering your stuff through our links. MY UPDATE: I bought this charger and used it for almost a month. Initially, I was super happy with it. It worked well and was quiet, only charging up the fans maybe once or twice during a charge (1 battery) for 30 seconds at a time. It worked well and seemed to be doing what I bought it for. Charge and charge well. BUT, once I started to do a couple of things, I hit a snag. Discharging - I could not get it over 0.6 amps discharge, even though it is advertised at 3amps discharging. Charging 2 batteries - It was taking forever! At least compared to what I was expecting. I looked through all the settings and tried to figure out if I was doing anything wrong. Verdict - 2 batteries, it was only charging at 50W per channel. This charger is advertised at 200W and shows on the box at 100w x 2. This is true. But ONLY with an external power supply. The Spektrum one runs at $110 USD, which after spending $150 for the charger is a very steep price! The same goes for the discharging issue. To figure all of this out, I had called Horizon and talked them through my issues, and what I said above was clearly explained to me. This is super unfortunate as it was advertised at 2 x 100w, which even at that price point is expensive compared to the competition. Nowhere is it explained that you would never a power supply to reach this. (Myself and the guys at my LHS tried to find something and could not. ) I love Spektrum and am not here to bad mouth them. Just to explain my situation and what I had to find out the hard way. This is a great charger if you are planning on running their batteries, if not. I would look at alternative options especially at this price point.

Could you explain you need a power supply?
@chuhn1
@chuhn1 4 жыл бұрын
I realize this is an old post, but since its stickied to the top, its worth correcting the record. Discharging - Is limited to 5W- so max amps is a function of voltage. Specs should read up to 3A max or better still state in W. Practically speaking, the auto discharge function of Smart batts eliminates the need to discharge on the charger. Watts verdict- Are you sure you are talking the S2100? There is no external power supply option- its AC. On mine, it is definitely delivering 200 W- or darn close. Charging 1 6S in port 1, its doing 7.9A*24.1v=190w. Adding a second 6S battery to port 2 divides the power depending on charge state. In this case, port 2 pulling 139w and port 1 down to 55W. Much smarter than two independent 100W chargers.

@Vanka473
@Vanka473 4 жыл бұрын
@@LayneSteighlee It needs an external power supply because it can't provide enough wattage through the built in power supply. People purchase power supplies (like Meanwell) and then wire those up to the charger.

Charging bag: You recommend using a charging bag. I have this same exact charger and batteries, however the balancing port and charging wire pigtails are so short. There is no way to get the batteries into a charging bag when these batteries are connected to the charger. Obviously airflow is important, so I don't think placing the entire charger and batteries in a charging bag together would be a very safe alternative. What do you do when charging this particular setup?

Is load balancing activated when the smaller wire is connected? At 3:57 you say if you want to balance your battery at 0 .1 amps charging rate it is not recommended. Is not the better rate of charging and balancing better at small amp rate, then something which is greater amps and a shorter time to bal/charge? Thumbs up.

The batteries have pretty short wires and I believe I should keep the charger outside the bag. Are there extension cables available to accomplish this (batteries have two connections to the charger)? Seems like a nice bit of innovation for the hobby, though with a couple of caveats: 1. I noticed it defaulted to charging Nate's 2200mAh LiPo at 3.3A (1.5C). I'd rather see the straight-from-the-factory default be set to 1C, as that promotes the best pack health (longevity). If the user wants to override to charge faster (within spec, of course), that's fine. Maybe it just trips a pet peeve of mine, but I don't think defaulting to an accelerated rate is in the best interest of the "don't bother me with the details" kind of customer. Save that option (and the consequences/risks) for the customer who cares enough about quick charging to choose it on purpose. 2. Remember that the self-discharge feature in the pack works by slowly dissipating energy as heat. Generally, LiPo-safe containers are designed to contain heat and fumes. If your pack is inside one of those, be aware of the potential for heat build-up during the self-discharge cycle. Even well below combustion levels, exposure to significant heat (say, from multiple packs self-discharging in the same container) won't help and may hurt your battery. Mostly, just use good judgment in how you store these packs. This is especially relevant since a key attribute of a self-discharge system is that it will engage automatically, regardless of whether you are around to monitor it. Personally, I see the self-discharge function as the most useful part of the system. Over the years, I've had a few LiPo packs that developed premature "hangar rash" from being left fully charged for too long. That said, the Spektrum line is relatively expensive compared to non-Horizon Hobby brands, so I'd have to be mismanaging and shelf puffing a lot of batteries before the cost-benefit would reach break-even. The auto-configure function is cute, but honestly the utility of it is pretty limited. Calling it a hassle to take a few seconds to punch in the charge settings is way into the deep end of first-world problems. The biggest advantage I can think of is that it reduces the chances of fat-fingering a setting. If you are prone to misfiring on the cell count or seriously botching the charge rate, then I guess that would be beneficial (assuming you aren't willing to devote a little more attention to the entry process). Ironically, my Hitec charger already includes a safety check on the cell count, so I'd have to double-fail to mess that up. It remains to be seen whether the pack history serves any useful purpose. Aside from arbitrary statistics, I'm not sure what it gives you. The condition of the battery can be reasonably well understood by its effective vs. published capacity, as well as any physical deformities (swelling, etc.). Since usage circumstances are anything but uniform, things like cycle counts don't mean much. As the saying goes, there are lies, damned lies, and then there's statistics. For those who predominantly operate within the Horizon Hobby world, I can see the attractiveness of this system. It fits with the Horizon Hobby philosophy of premium (in grade and price) products that are beginner-friendly and side-step the nerdy aspects. Outside of that group, it's a harder sell. Apologies, Nate. I'm sure you weren't asking for *that much* feedback! Hopefully something (anything?) in there provides good food for thought. :)

I too noticed the default high amp rate. Which is fine I guess if you're in a big hurry to get a battery charged, but not good if you plan to make the battery last a few years. It seems most chargers default to max amp ratings for the given battery, and you have to manually turn it down. I am not a big fan of Horizon Hobby. My first dealing with them was when I bought a $1400 drone and it came with a defective camera. Even though it was still under warranty (still just days old) they refused to replace the camera, and told me I would need to "buy" a $500 replacement camera. With spare batteries, flight case, hand held gimbal for the camera, and small tv remote size one-handed controller, I spent over $2000 on that drone and with a defective camera I got very little use from it, and it now just sits in it's case unused. A couple years later I bought a crawler truck from them. With less than an hour use the steering servo burst into flames! They not only replaced the servo, they upgraded it to one that cost about 3x as much as the original. That somewhat redeemed them a bit, but I still have a sour taste from my first experience with them with the defective drone camera. Now that they have taken over so many other R/C companies they've changed their business model where they list things on their website but you can't order them, they are listed as "in stores only", and I can never find a store that actually carries the product, and they don't allow anyone to sell the product online. So... Horizon Hobby is the "last" place I will go looking for any R/C stuff.
@chadpollman7970
@chadpollman7970 5 жыл бұрын
@Duck Landes That’s a bummer about your first experience. My own experiences with Horizon Hobby have been very good overall. I suppose even the best of ‘em have a bad day now and then. I gather most of the in-store-only merchandise has to do with promoting the hobby shops, trying to keep them relevant and in business. Remains to be seen whether that is a successful strategy. My guess is it won’t accomplish much. To really make a go of it, the shops need more than “exclusives” gimmicks. And in the meantime, the overall company hurts itself by (1) artificially making it harder for customers to do business with them, and (2) redirecting that business toward a channel that has significantly higher overhead costs (retail vs. online). Unless you can make up the gap on impulse purchases and organic repeat business, those inefficiencies will eventually take their toll on the organization. In case it sounds otherwise, I’ll add that I really do like and respect Horizon Hobby, and certainly wish the best for them. They do at least their share of the innovation in this hobby, and generally put out quality products that can fairly command a premium.
@DFDuck55
@DFDuck55 5 жыл бұрын
Chat Pollman: Does Horizon Hobby really innovate? What products do they design or produce themselves? None as far as I know. They buy from other companies, and buy other companies and "rebrand" them with the Horizon Hobby name. The drone I bought from them was a Blade Chroma, a rebranded Yuneec drone, sold exclusively by Horizon, with a camera made by CGO. Horizon didn't make any part of it. The crawler I bought from them was made by ECX, and sold exclusively by Horizon. They didn't make any part of it. When the 2nd Gen of that crawler came out, still made by ECX not by Horizon, I wanted one, but could never find one because it was "in stores only" and according to their store search no store within the 300 mile search parameter (the max their search goes out) had it, and it was not (is not) available anywhere online. The one good thing I will say about Horizon Hobby is they are really good at keeping replacement parts in stock for the products they sell. I do see the reasoning behind forcing people to physically go to a hobby shop to purchase things. But that doesn't work for me, I don't drive so even going to AMain 20 miles from me is not really do-able, so I buy online. I would prefer to support my local hobby store, but it's cheaper for me to buy out of state, pay more for shipping rather than paying California sales tax. I personally don't see Horizon as innovating anything. They're just a big corporation that buys up other companies and sells their products as their own. My next RC crawler will be a Redcat Everest Gen8 :>

If the pack can last 100 cycles, they might only allow you 40 or 50 cycles. 2. What if the self discharge malfunctions and now you are left with a dead pack. Or worse, heats up enough to cause thermal runaway. 3. They make the batteries and charger talk to each other. Meaning company X will not charge a company V battery and vise versa. Who is to say that it would stop at that because it could also be done to esc aswell making you brand loyal throughout 4. Now that there is an extra wire in the plug, you simply can not solder on what you use. Forcing you to use adaptors. Not a problem if th x60/90 ect become standard. It is cool to see easier technology but there are alot of things that can go wrong or the companies can do to limit your choices or to drain your pocket book even further in a fairly expensive hobby. These are mostly what ifs but something to keep in the back of your mind. When i first started using lipo after getting back into the hobby i was scared. But after a few cycles got comfortable with how to charge and storage charge my lipos.

1. I suppose that tech is available, but I really don't see them doing that, at least not any time within the next few years as one day it could be viewed as a mandatory safety feature? 2. We still think you should always store your batteries safely and that seems like a bigger "what if" than basically all other battery scenarios. 3. Every battery and charger is universal currently ;-) 4. I don't personally see that being a problem. I just bought a few converters like five years ago and still use the same ones. I'll do the same for a few IC3s ;-) Just my opinions. Glad to hear yours as well. Thanks for tuning in!

I just purchased this charger today and I’m so glad I did. It seems pretty easy for someone like me (no good with numbers). And I do have smart batteries. But being new to using RC cars, I still have so many questions that I just can’t find answers for online. But the thing that concern me the most is storage, cause I know those batteries can cause fires if not careful. I do have a charging bag, and an ammo box, but, 1. where in the house should I charge the batteries? Does it have to be outside, and do I have to be sitting right next to it during the charging process. 2. Do brand new batteries need to be charged right away? 3. Can a battery explode even when at storage charge? 4. Where in the house should I store them when traveling or away from home? I heard that in the garage, but you how it can get pretty damn hot in there during the summer. Is it safe to store them inside in air conditioning if they are not being used? Any guidance will be appreciated .

I recommend a Bat-Safe to store and charge LiPos. Don't waste your money on those bags because they just don't work. Search KZbin for "Lipo Fires" and "Bat-Safe" and you will see what I mean. The real danger in LiPos is charging them or letting them get exposed to too much heat. Just sitting at a storage charge at a normal room temperature there is little danger--if there was a serious danger, hobby shops wouldn't store the for sale on the shelf. I keep all 22 of my batteries in four Bat-Safes. The Bat-Safe has an engineered limit as to the amount of energy can be safely stored (222Wh). My fifth Bat-Safe is used exclusively for charging. I keep all of them stored in my house and remain in the same room when charging. I am very confident that since I use the Bat-Safe within its engineered specifications, and fire and soot would be contained. The Bat-Safe retails for about $60. Well worth the investment to be safe and have peace of mind.

Good question! If you dont want to think about bats at all, and just want to bash for fun (sounds like this is you) I'd go with this charger. The Duo basically does what this charger does, except this one is easier for beginners especially and takes a lot of thinking out of the equation for everyone in the hobby. Also, before you go soldering, just buy one or two adapters, or a new XT90 with bullet plugs 😉 That's what I did, for just a few bucks and saved a ton of work. I truly hate soldering because I'm just bad at it, lol. Hope this helps! 👍⚓😃

TheRcSaylors yea but you’d still have to input for NON smart battery’s though wouldn’t you? Or does it read most of nine smarts too. If not woukdnt be much diff. Plenty of how to on the duo seems simple enough. An for $85 instead of 150$. Just don’t know if I’d use the smart battery’s enough. I have a couple batt. brands I use that has treated me very well. But if it auto reads (for most part) non ones than that would be a deciding factor.

Nice charger! Right now I will stick to the Venom charger. Its been a good charger. Now that I finally know how to charge, its simple as reading the numbers and pushing a few buttons. Investing in a good charger as a beginner it is smart to invest in something like that. As with all new tech, I generally like to wait a year before jumping on the band wagon. Even with planes, it generally takes me longer to go after one. If they have bugs, I know it and can adress it because of your video's.
