ONE THING!!! With RC Cars, the low voltage cutoff is RIGHT before the cell is about to drop to 3.0-3.2v usually, (per cell ofc) so you guys still ALWAYS want to use one of these because not doing so will 1: Have a chance of harming your bat or ECU and 2: not put it at storage having you to charge it afterwards if you're not gonna use it. Put one on anyways, it will save the life of your car, and it will save your lipos in the long run. Happy bashing

yes saylors, but the ones with open prongs always get bent by the know it all rc. so knowing this the device with a shielded connector like most chargers have will help most plug in. plus that eliminates shorts and fires. you can buy them from tekin, lrp, spectrum, dynamite horizon.

Don't know how you'd think a video that has pro tips about a hobby we have in common would be boring to anyone in the hobby. Anyone lacking the patience to learn something about what they're interested in, well, they won't be around very long anyway. I think some of your viewers might have progressed beyond the very beginner stage and might like some videos about improving skills. It seems to me that you're so focused on what to buy first that you don't follow up with how to actually fly (in the case of aircraft). Care, maintenance, repair, if someone gets into r.c., those can be very useful. Better than a recommendation about the newest beginner camera drone. Ultimately, it's up to you and the audience you want to attract, and if you want to retain an audience that find the latest cheap drone is not what they're interested in now. Some of us have made a purchase. I have a Bugs3. I bought it as a first quad to learn to fly. I intend to buy a commercial grade, probably not quad, maybe a 6 blade uav. Can fly with a failed motor. Lose a 100 dollar uav, ouch. Lose a few thousand dollar one, well, that's why I want to learn all I can before making that commitment. I am interested in this cheap tool. I'll order it via your link. I hope that will help you. I will also compare the voltage readings with my Fluke meter. 2 bucks, can fly as an alarm, much more convenient to use, yeah, I'm sold. It better work well in the context of what it costs, and I think it will. I'll buy two five packs and I'll expect at least one to be completely unreliable. That cheap, no problem. But I'm learning, and I hope you'll expand into more advanced topics. Stretch your wings, and flap them!

Those things are freaking loud! Don't fool with them late at night if you have roomates! Having them come running because they think a smoke alarm has gone off is *not fun*! But, yes, I bought a bunch when someplace, I forget where, had them on sale for 5 for $5 USD. Great devices.

10:25 If you want to make your batteries last much longer (total lifetime, not use time per charge), never ever charge individual cells above 4.15 V. Also, the lifetime will also improve if you never go below 3.6 V but if you always stay within 3.6 V and 4.15 V to make cells last longer, the Wh per charge you can get from the battery is obviously going to be lower. You get maybe 80% out if you stay within those voltages.

I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago along with a AeroScout RTF plane and four extra smart batteries. I've been connecting the lipo alarm to the battery before I install it in the plane to check the readings. So far, I haven't flown the plane long enough to have the alarm sound (I've set it at 3.40). It is nice to be able to check the readings on the alarm when I'm finished flying. So far, I've been down to the 3.60 level. I bought the AeroScout RTF after viewing a couple of your videos on it and I've been thrilled with it so far!!!

Yeah we used to use stone knives too. You got guys that refuse to learn needed skills so they rest on "we used to do it back in......." Same with "smart chargers" for dumb people, some don't know and don't want to know what the values of the battery means. This comes from an attitude of just wanting to have fun and not doing anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. I think it can also be used to locate a lost plane if you shut off the transmitter it beeps.

@cedricdb
@cedricdb 4 жыл бұрын
He didn't say the title was not true, he said it's clickbait. Sure, it might theoretically be possible to 'save me THOUSANDS', but I'm sure you know very well that's pretty unlikely. In my opinion, this claim along with the caps is a little cringy, like you're underestimating the intelligence of your audience. Many other rc channels don't use this kind of clickbait and are very successful. You said you'd change the title if he could explain even a fraction of a way it's not true, here you go. This is part of the current title: "$2 Tool Will Save YOU THOUSANDS! " Using "will" implies that if I were to buy this tool, I'm 100% guaranteed to save a couple thousand dollars. That's completely false. The only case in which this could save me one or two lipos is if I don't have any battery telemetry or OSD voltage readout and if I don't keep track of flight time or don't notice the voltage sag while flying. And even then this wouldn't have saved my a couple thousand dollars because I think no one would actually keep on buying new batteries without beginning to wonder why they're all breaking.

Great video, guys! Perhaps Professor Saylor could expand a bit from the basics, and explain WHY the LiPo alarm is needed...WHY is 3.8v the “magic number”...why don’t we simply run a LiPo dead, like we did with NiCad’s and NiMH’s...why don’t we store LiPo’s at FULL voltage? Also, you left-out another benefit of running LiPo alarms in aircraft: if you crash and/or lose your aircraft, voltage drop will eventually trigger the alarm, which should help you locate your aircraft. 👍🏼

I use these in my RC boats, so I have half a chance of hearing Lipo voltage before they get stranded in the middle of the water. I soldered an LED to one of the buzzer connections for a visual too. Great & informative.

When I'm done flying I always wait for my battery to cool down and when it is cool I recharge it and store it. Is that a good idea to store my batteries fully charged?

First off I find your channel very exciting. I been flowing both channels for about a year. Your information that you pass along help people like me feel more comfortable in the RC world. I’m thinking about getting the Redcat Gen 8 Rock Crawler. I love to see more gliders if possible love the family style show keep up the good work. Hope to be a future Patreon by November.

Great information! I do have one question if your battery is just a little high for storage how would you recommend discharging the battery to get it to optimal storage voltage? Thanks

I have been out of RC flying for over 20 years. WOW how things have changed. And I flew all gas engine planes at that time. Now just getting back into it (3D printing planes) and all the new electric planes is totally new to me. Thus, all this new battery usage is new to me. THANK YOU so much for saving me some money and keeping me and my family safer!!!! Your info is fantastic!!! Greg

Are they good for like bashers? Do trucks like arrma have cutoffs in the esc or would one of these be good for them too?

They work with ground vehicles, sure. If the ESC has a LiPo mode (either permanent or set via a jumper pin), that mode will have a cutoff. Check the manual for instructions and to see which LiPo batteries will work (e.g. “compatible with 2S-3S batteries”). Beware of ESCs that are not LiPo-compatible or are configured in NiCd/NiMH mode. That usually means either no cutoff or one programmed at a voltage that is unsafe for LiPo’s. Provided there are no other issues (e.g. LiPo voltage exceeding what the electronics can take), you can use an alarm to advise you when to voluntarily quit, but you are doing so at your own risk.

I'm mostly a car guy so do u need an alarm for crawling or bashing I could also see this good for my boat so I dont have to swim lol

Aircraft and boats benefit the most since they need a “limp home” capability that can result in excessively discharging the LiPo battery. If set appropriately, the alarm gives enough advance warning to safely allow a less hurried return. The fact that you can set a known trigger voltage is a decided advantage over the typically unknown trigger point of the vehicle’s built-in “alarm” (throttle cut, pulsing throttle, etc.). For ground vehicles, the consequences of a sudden, hard cutoff are (in most cases) minimal, so the alarm is more of a luxury accessory. (Your car won’t fall out of the sky or get stranded in the middle of the lake if it suddenly shuts down.) With an alarm, you still get the benefits of advance warning and a known trigger voltage. Also, the ability to do an at-a-glance check of the charge state (looking at the voltage readout), for estimating remaining runtime, is convenient. Great question!
