It was established well before the draft that Drake Maye was a rough prospect. He has natural talent, size, athleticism, and a strong arm. He lacks several things as well. Accuracy, timing, reading defenses etc. It's up to the Patriots to develop the kid and everyone knew that ahead of time as he is simply not a finished product at this time.

I think a big reason he could be an upgrade to Mac is he won’t have the fear Mac had been playing with ingrained in him yet. Still might happen since they decided to take a Qb first instead of building up a stronger offense, but that’s just the rebuild philosophy i subscribe to the most. Situation is key. CJ Stroud likely would’ve been even better if he came into a really good situation. Drake is just gonna have to fight for his life for a season or two before they can really get good results.

@Mikerophone As a pats fan I think a good QB elevates his teams more than anything. Who was Cooper Kupp before Matthew Stafford stepped in. Also the Texans had literally no weapons when CJ stroud stepped in. Stefan Diggs did not even reach superstar status before he had a viable qb step in like Kirk Cousins. Yeah the pats did Mac no favors with Matt Patricia hiring, but Mac’s noodle arm did our receivers and our offense no favors either. 2. Drake Maye’s situation is not bad. He is playing across a top 5 defense when healthy. Also the patriots really crushed the draft by getting Jalen Polk and Javon Baker and Jaheim Bell as weapons and some new O line players to protect him. Also another good part of Drake Maye’s situation is that the pats coaching staff and front office is brand new so they have the patience to develop Maye since they are not on the hot seat

Going into the draft, I viewed Drake Maye as a boom or bust prospect. As a Patriots fan, I hoped the team would trade down from three to build the rest of the team before taking a quarterback. They needed so much more than just a quarterback. (Mac Jones was made the scapegoat for all the Patriots problems in 2023, but it wasn't all him. No, I'm not saying Mac was blameless, as he made his share of mistakes.) Last season the Patriots had a terrible offensive line and receivers that couldn't separate. Remember that the Patriots signed Jacoby Brissett as a free agent. He will mentor Maye and likely start at QB until Maye is ready. No reason to rush Maye into starting. The offensive line is still a huge question mark, especially since there is no left tackle on the roster. NO, Caedan Wallace (the third-round pick) is not a left tackle.

My personal hope was the Pats would trade back, focus on getting recieivng and offensive line talent, and get Spencer Rattler in a later round. Build a better foundation, start Brissett with an improved roster, and let Rattler marinade for a year or two, and if he doesn't work out, be able to draft a QB in 2025 or 2026 with a better foundation for a young QB then. That said, I like the idea of Maye sitting at first so let him grow into the role, which Mac Jones never got the luxury of.

Mitch Trubisky went #2 in 2017 draft after having a decent junior year (304/447 68.0% 30TD's-6 Int's & 157.9 college QB rating)! Before his junior year he had only 125 pass attempts! Though Maye had 26 starts, it's better than Trubisky's 14 starts in college!

The rumor that the Giants would trade their 2025 first round pick in addition to switching the 6th pick for the 3rd pick in the 2024 pick is baloney. The Giants would have traded for the Pats' third pick if they could steal it. However, the Giants want to win in 2024, and if they did not want to win in 2024 they would not have signed Drew Lock. and they would not have traded for Brian Burns. Only wishful thinkers thought the Giants would have traded high draft picks for an unknown like Drake Maye.

I have never understood why teams spend a high 1st round drart pick on a qb, only to watch them spend all season buried in the grass or injured on the sidelines because their oline absolutely sucked !! How the hell is ANY qb going to be real successful if they are on their back or running for their lives all game, especially a rookie. Then people call them a "bust" At least if Williams sucks in Chicago, no one can say the organization didn't put him in a position to succeed. But I feel bad for some of these guys.

Literally they planned this early on when they signed Brissett and are being patient about Maye and are in no rush to throw him out there unless he’s shown he’s light years better than Brissett in training camp. They want to develop him they want to make him the best he can be before we kill his confidence like Mac like a Zach Wilson. Study reads study progressions nfl game planning continue to perfect his mechanics. He’s 21 years old if they fix the few minor things to improve with him and continue to build this offense which I think they had a great start with this years draft. Polk and Baker are 2 guys that fit his best targets in college they have a great catch radius and if his throws are off they’re able to fight for the ball and bring it in bailing him out. Yeah the line is the big question no doubt on that but if they fall into the top 10 for the draft next year there’s the dude of LSU there’s the dude from Texas they can draft and they’ve got their career left tackle. Patriots have silently done great for a team no one wanted to come to this offseason, brought back their key guys and got guys to build and grow with their QB. It’s up to the new coaching staff to help make him the best he can be and if they succeed he’s gonna have a great career.

What exactly has Jerod Mayo done as a coach to say that he has done a good job? If you don't want to label Drake May as a bust because he hasn't played a game, the same should go the same for Jerod Mayo. He hasn't coached a single game in the NFL. However, the fact remains the mistake Pats made prior to the draft. You didn't NEED to get rid of Mac Jones and get back peanuts when you still had him on a rookie deal. You could have traded all those picks that Vikings had to rebuild your team, while still have Mac Jones at QB. Perhaps get a stud OL and WR. Or drafted Marvin Harrison Jr., a can't miss WR. If Mac Jones still doesn't pan out, you would get another high pick to get your QB of the future. What can't miss qualities does Drake May have? Mac Jones has a better ceiling as a rookie than Drake May has, even if Mac was a rookie. Now, Mac already has 2 years experience in reading NFL defense and film study. You will need to start over with Drake May. Only problem Mac has is that he has lost confidence in his OL, which you could have solved by drafting 2 solid OL in a talented depth class. Once you drafted Drake May, just who are the players you surrounded him with? Any WRs or RBs that scare you? Any top 5 players at their position? It will probably be the same type of WRs that can't get separation.

NE fan/resident here. My opinion and hopes are that they dont rush him in. I'm ok with them starting Jacoby Brisette for the whole season or two. Unless Maye, Polk, and Baker just light it up the whole preseason against 1st team reps with some crazy chemistry. Then let him sit and take itvall in.

Too soon to tell. Give the young guy mid-way through his 2nd season. Even rookies who have success in year one, usually it takes 2 consecutive seasons to be viewed as a good QB. Defenses always adjust. QBs have to continuously adjust too.

Yet Penix was deemed a great prospect NFL ready but because had 3 major injuries. He isn't nor will he better than Maye. But he had a ton of game experience under his belt, accurate, strong arm and can read defenses. These pundits and scouts are so biased. It should come down to game film and what the players have done. Period.

Any time that a franchise bypasses a haul of draft picks to settle on one particular player, you have to be concerned, because that is literally putting all your eggs in one basket. Having said that, it is always going to be 50/50 at BEST whether a highly drafted prospect pans out. If Maye is a "competent" NFL QB, and nothing more this is still a bad pick. If he turns into an incompetent washout, it is a horrendously bad pick for leaving 3 Number One picks on the table to draft him. Unless Maye turns into a top 10 (or top 5) NFL QB, this is lose/lose and lose again for the Patriots.

Mayo is tempering the expectations. Better play it safe. He might want to keep Maye the whole year on the bench. What better way than keep saying, he is not ready and there is a lot to work on. Everyone would know that there is truth behind that and will help managing the push when we will be 2-11 to change Brissett to Maye.

As a patriots fan I’m not concerned(yet). Like u said the guy hasn’t even been a patriot for a month and this is coming from someone who would’ve rather had MHJ but i think it’s way to early to call him a bust and definitely to early to say we made the wrong decision, the guy hasn’t even played in preseason yet😂😂😂😂. I won’t even be mad if he doesn’t start until after like week 10, the patriots aren’t gonna be good again this year so it would be better for him to sit behind Brissett as he’s already been here and it’ll give more time for Maye to improve which he obviously needs and i speak for every pats fan when i say we don’t want Drake Maye to get Mac Jonesd. I don’t need him to be CJ Stroud or Tom Brady, just be above average and put the right ppl around him to be a contending team in the next 3-5 years don’t rush him out there.

As a pats fan I'm not worried, the patriots aren't going to be a winning team this season, Jacoby is gonna be the starter so maye can develop. As long as AVP stays as the oc for the pats for at least 3 seasons then drake maye should be a great qb and get the pats back to contention

You're reading too far into this, Mike. If the team loves Drake, but Jarod says there's more to work on, then we got the right QB. The expectation in New England is very high when it comes to getting a spot on the 53. I feel like this was a good"..he has lots to work on.." before August rolls around. I feel like Maye will be ready for the the impending up and down season. Prediction: 10-7 with a wild card against Buffalo if NE can stay healthy. This will not be the same team we've season over the last 3 seasons.

Few quarterbacks are successful with poor offensive lines.and crappy receivers. I remember watching the Giants of the 1960s who were a classic example of this. Fran Tarkington was running for his life with almost no one who could catch the ball and hold on to it. The only exceptions being Joe Morrison and Aaron Thomas , who passed away this week.

Jacoby Brissett likely will be the starter, with Drake Maye sitting for a year to develop the skills to be a starter. (Mahomes and Love sat behind starters their first year in the NFL, and it definitely paid off.) Maye was always a prospect that would need to work on his fundamentals, starting with his messy footwork. Clemson, Florida State and Miami are the ACC schools with good, respected football programs. UNC, along with Duke, are basketball powerhouse programs.
