At my parents house we used to burn brush fires every year with huge bonfires with no push back from our surrounding neighbors. Until one year where someone did happen to let us know that the smoke was bothersome and was wafting through their windows. We have since reduced the size to deal w/ that, but at the time we never once cared what the effect was on anyone else around us. In seeking our "happiness" or our "goals" we were indifferent asto who it effected. Kenneth was absolutely right on this point.

19:32 It does make a difference, other kids will mock them and if they believe Santa will reward good kids with toys, what about the poor? Who get few or no toys? You are damaging your kid’s ability to feel empathy.
@kimsland9999 күн бұрын
Actually belief itself is not a disorder. We believe in lots of things and then find out they were false. Fairies, leprechauns, Santa, gods! It's when those beliefs harm themselves or others. For instance generally any theistic belief is harmful. Thus harm must be the issue, not belief. For instance informing someone their belief is harmful and they continue to do it! Is belief in fairies harmful? I'd say no for people (kids) still to learn sceptism. However if fairy belief causes harm, then clearly that harm should be stopped. It's an equivocation fallacy to say: God belief (generally always bad ) causes harm THEREFORE belief in Santa is wrong. When no harm for those kids or others is coming from it (as long as they eventually learn their belief was false). Is it lying? Oddly not all lies are harmful to yourself and others. Lying is not punishable under good intentions. It's only the harm that it may cause themselves or others.
@Nocturnalux9 күн бұрын
@ The belief in the idea that good kids get rewarded with toys is harmful in itself. Do you know what kids don’t believe in Santa? Poor ones. I was not poor growing up but some of my friends were and I was very aware they wouldn’t get gifts, regardless of how well they behaved. Same went for some rich snobs at school who always swum in gifts despite being really mean to everyone. Santa is capitalism 101 and started out telling kids this version of prosperity gospel for children is not great, to put it mildly.
@kimsland9999 күн бұрын
@@Nocturnaluxyou raised 2 arguments. 1. Poor kids (again) thus the belief must be harmful? 2. Capitalisation, buying gifts, it's a rort. If poor kids are believing Santa will come, then that is a harmful belief, not because of the belief itself but because of the harm it brings. If other kids receive presents they are not harming other kids, just as if the poor kid won lotto, they are not hurting the other kids. As the presents (!) Aren't harmful (generally) nor the belief, it's only when that false belief causes harm. False beliefs! False beliefs are not harmful on their own, it's only when or if harm comes from it. What about sceptism? Endeavouring to remove (or question really) false beliefs is not harmful. Although any harm it's presently causing must be stopped. Capitalisation The reason why a day is set aside (other than doing everyday or no days) is to make it a psychologically special day to hope for. If we have resources available, then good idea to use them. As long as it doesn't cause harm.
@kimsland9999 күн бұрын
@@NocturnaluxI have so many conversations with my psychologist daughter. (Appeal to authority). Years ago I said to her, Clearly theists false beliefs are a disorder! It's like unbelievable! She answered: Religious beliefs are not a disorder. Nor is believing in an imaginary 10 foot rabbit. It's the poor reasoning or harmful actions that may come from that. There is nothing to recover from as it's not an illness. After a few weeks of conversations, I finally saw reason. Belief is not a disorder, true or false. You can want to believe in as many true things, but if you don't and no harm is coming ever., then no issue. Wanting to believe in as many true things and as little false things - is a personal viewpoint. If others prefer false things (without harm) then all good.
@TheSnoeedog9 күн бұрын
@@Nocturnalux naturally yours is the only anecdote that matters and is absolutely indicative of the state of affairs in general. We'll just add that to the litany of fallacies you're bringing to the table here.....as a child I can understand being oblivious to the fallacy, but as an adult, laying it down to be so confidently wrong is really curious..... * I was very aware they wouldn’t get gifts, regardless of how well they behaved. Same went for some rich snobs at school who always swum in gifts despite being really mean to everyone.* "Same went for some rich snobs...." is incoherent when the example presented is the opposite, NOT THE SAME. I mean, I don't wanna nut-pick, but you haven't even established that being mean = being bad. I'm mean to bigots. I go out of my way to make sure they feel unwelcome, uncomfortable and worthless, as human-adjacent, ill-tempered, misshapen, inbred, miscreant failures in parenting. Is that bad? Just because you have internalized a sense that the poor are bad, don't go try and blaming it on the myth of santa claus. You're a classist. Own it. @RTSOB19 күн бұрын
It's not helpful to promote any narrative, true or false, if the sole objective is to create a positive vibe. And if the one roadblock to that goal is malice, you're entering a briar patch. It's not difficult to find historical examples where malice is employed to ostensibly create a positive result. If enough people buy into that mindset, reality becomes almost secondary and the distinction between true and false (ie: good and bad) becomes critically important.

The only reason it is an option to tell the kid Santa isn't real is because they lies were told already. Odds are as a parent you were part of the lie if not the origin.
