Good move from Dell to try something fresh in this nische category. For years you could get one out of the Dell Latitude 2-in-1 line which was basically a Surface Pro clone (I'm still using a Dell Latitude 5290 2-in-1 because it's very easy to open and replace/ clean stuff). I also love my Surface Go 2 because of the fanless design and the size. The XPS would be my choice but without the integrated kickstand and a flat back it's a no-go. Is it possible to use it flat on adesk without wobbling from site to site?

Some people prefer fanless. The SP9 fans runs non-stop like a jet engine using multiple chrome tabs+Excel/Word. I work late evening so I'll take quiet/peace over slightly better power/loud fan noise. I had both and kept the XPS. I got a mini itx custom desktop with three 120mm fan and the SP9 fan sometimes runs louder than my desktop for basic task! 😂

It's hard to choose between the two as Dell is comparatively cheaper than the Microsoft. Here in Malaysia, the Core i5 16/256 for XPS is €120 less than the Surface, and that's with bundled keyboard and stylus. If I add up the separate Surface keyboard and Slim Pen together, that cost even more money. So in terms of value, I take the Dell. However, the Surface has a much more powerful CPU and higher TDP than the XPS. So in terms of performance, the Surface wins. It is a real bummer that neither tablet has a headphone jack, so a USB-C hub is the only solution.
@NotebookcheckReviews Жыл бұрын
Agreed, but I ask myself, do you really need "more" performance in such a device? I was using the XPS 13 for my "daily" task (E-Mails, KZbin Comments, Scripting, KZbin/Netflix etc.), and it is more than powerful enough for this. The only thing that bothered me was that is didn't have a kickstand.

…a USB-C DAC costs £10 at Amazon and is split (can charge as well) and can just stay attached to your headphone jack. No jack is not even worth mentioning in 2023.

The only reason why the Surface has more powerful CPU is DDR5 RAM support. The CPU in the Dell XPS 2-in-1 is only available in LPDDR form. Also, both CPU have similar performance except for higher iGPU speed and PCIe Express lane, that's it. Personally, I get the Dell or the ARM 5G version of Surface Pro 9.

OK, without actual thinkng I felt the surface webcam to be much better quality in this sample :D somehow the dell's way too reddish and not as balanced but it's true that there are more details especially in the background. and mic sound much thinner but is also clearer at the same time. Also I found the keyboard of the surface pro more plesant than most laptop keyboards :D

They are both good, especially compared to what is out there. For me, personally, the surface was a little too warm. It is crazy how good these keyboards are. For me, the XPS has the edge since it lays flat on the desk. That makes it feel a lot more "solid." But again, they are both excellent.

Question: did you ever use a Lenovo Thinkpad 2? I always looked for something similar. I had one and the only downside was the weak processor. The Bluetooth keyboard was amazing and still works. Hi there NBC, mad respect from India, here the i5 and the i7 models are separated by a whopping premium of $500, although I am not a very power hungry user, or a content creator, just a researcher....still when I do research, I can have in excess of 20 tabs open and a few excel, word and Pdfs open... I have an Xbox and hence gaming is not a need at all with this device....I still rock a MacBook Pro i5 8th Gen with Touch Bar, which seems to be failing on me anytime soon, it has gotten sluggish especially after the latest Ventura Update, I am done with Macs and I always wanted a surface for the longest time I remember.....although getting an M1 or an M2 makes a lot of sense, I am asking you honestly, If I were to switch to a Surface, would this be a good year to do so...? I am eyeing the i5 12th intel model with the keyboard and pen that costs roughly $1800....Please Advise!

Hi Alex, I like the video and the very detailed comparison on the website. Can you please test the i7 CPU version of the Dell against the i7 CPU version of the Surface, it does not seem "fair" to compare the Microsoft i7 version of the Surface to a i5 Dell. Perhaps it was not availible at the time of the video? Like I said, I like the video. Keep up the good work.
@NotebookcheckReviews Жыл бұрын
Hi there, you are right. From a CPU performance point of view, its not fair. But I thought it was still a viable comparison since you get quite the benefits from the Dell since it has the weaker CPU (battery live, passive design for example). And the argument can be made if you need more CPU power in such a device anyways. But you are also right in the assumption that we just haven't been able to get the i7 as a review sample! :)

Sigh no AMD CPUs basically mean I'm probably going to get a Starlabs StarLite Linux tablet; despite coming with a fan-less lower-end Intel Alder Lake CPU, it is currently less than $800 with a keyboard cover and a 1 TB SSD, which is a M.2 2280 form factor, 16 GB standard across all configurations, and it still has a headphone jack and even a micro HDMI port (not amazing but at least you can connect a display when both USB-C ports are taken). That being said, there is no Thunderbolt at all, and the lower-end CPU isn't amazing, but it does mean it is fanless and likely even more efficient on battery life. And honestly; do you really need to edit 4k videos on a 12 inch tablet? Not to mention, you can get the Starlab Starlite 5 with Windows for about $100 extra (it comes standard with a Linux distro, like Ubuntu, Fedora, or Kubuntu, or you can get no OS pre-installed for no extra cost), and for those geeky users like me, it comes with Coreboot firmware, meaning it is the best privacy focused tablet you can currently get, if that matters to you. While it's currently not shipping yet (it is a preorder after all), if you want a "desktop OS" tablet under $1000, the Starlabs StarLite 5 is probably your best option, unless you are able to get a 16 GB of RAM Surface Pro 8 on sale for under $1000, which is tough.

The top and bottom bezel that are thicker than the side bezels annoy me so much on such a powerful and modern machine. I just can't understand why they didn't change that. The bezel on the Dell for example is not that thin, but at least it's evenly distributed. Looks way cleaner.

I really love matte screens on smartphones like on the older sony xperia z3. for me the colours on glossy screens look to unnatural and oversaturated which irritates and disattracts me by a lot ^^ also the reason I prefer IPS over OLED - combined with microLED backlighting and as less reflections as possible, this could be the optimal solution for a lot of people. The XPS design is why these Windows tablets have failed and never reached MS target numbers. Windows tablets are effectively de facto laptops without the attached keyboards as few people wanting a tablet only will pay for a Windows one. So it must be a good laptop, the “lap” being the crucial point, and the XPS is a disaster for the user. It really is not worth looking beyond that; the Surface is an easy winner. However, the caveat is that most people should not buy this form factor on Windows. I would never buy a Windows tablet, full stop, but a 360 would give you some flexibility if you need tablet use occasionally, and be far better as an actual laptop than the SP9.
