Gold is not an "investment" it is money and nothing else. Everything else is credit. Anyone saves gold in the expectation that they will never need to exchange it for real goods but if they do need to exchange their gold it will be in a world where no paper or fiat currencies exist.

Txu jay… Alasdair Macleod is always an informative and knowledgeable speaker. His content is disturbing.. and sadly he’s been on message for years! But he’s message us very clear.. and he isn’t a lone voice! To a comment that you made in the interview jay.. can an I respectfully suggest that you fact check your comments. America is no longer the most powerful country in the world militarily .. years of neglect and over confidence in their “might” plus total exhaustion of their production base has pushed them well down the ladder. Might I suggest as a “go too” for a quick overview .. and interviews of extremely well versed people to watch Judging Freedom with Judge Andrew Napoletana. Very informative.. and really adds more perspective to a Alasdair’s commentary. Cheers sue

McLeod is among the smartest of the advocates for dealing with terrorism from a position of weakness but the way to have to learn Russian was the position of weakness. I get that you have the dubious onus of ensuring that you aren't fighting terrorism with terrorism but it is doable. Weimar Germany never had the reserve currency. Assuming the worst is likely to continue to be a way to underperform. Still you hedge for the worst.

Your guest got it wrong. No one is going back to a gold standard. What is coming is a dual currency system: national currencies for domestic transactions and international trade with gold for the settlement of international trade imbalances only.

Would like yo point out to Alasdair that in 1970s when Treasury ran the BoE, there was no division between bank and state ie no independence of the Bank of England. That changed as it had to, as two different functions but you can't blame Treasury in hindsight for performing Treasury functions, not monetary functions.

I don’t know if the United States goes to the gold standard or not, if we do Then I get gold. Right now it is more of a wealth insurance that doesn’t pay anything. I am not a wealthy person and so I am careful with what I invest in. I put my time and money into assets that provide cash flow and that go up in value. Going to a gold standard would force spend thrift politicians to balance a budget. And that would be a good thing. Course we would have to curtail the giving of billions to countries like we do. As for BRICS …I really don’t care. My thinking is fine let them do their own currency. talk the walk, then walk the talk. It would be interesting to see how it goes.
