I watched a reaction from 2 Danish girls (their mother is Korean) told the viewers their mother told them the title ONE LUCKY DAY is a piece of literature/book/novel she learned in her school years. It told a story of a man working hard abroad to save money to cure his dying wife. After some time, he went back home just to realize his wife had died. Parallel with Gi-hun story where he enters the Squid Game to win money for his sick mom, just for him to find his mom's body. If you guys watch back episode 2, the event in the episode foreshadows how the players are gonna die. 1. Sang Woo tried to commit suicide by lying in the bath tub inhaling a carbon poison. In the end he took his own life. 2. Sae Byeok put a knife on the broker's neck and she died with a stab on the neck. 3. Deok Su died falling from a high place just like he jumped over the bridge. 4. Ali died after he put his trust in someone who was supposed to be the one that took care of him just like he trusts the boss where he works. 5. Il Nam died after convincing Gi-hun to continue playing the game.

It's funny you said that the plot twist might "ruin" a rewatch. It definitely changes how you view things, but it also opens your eyes to the manipulation by Oh Il-nam. Instead of feeling sorry for him, you get to feel furious at him instead. And the gganbu scene is still sad, tbh, because Gi-hun's suffering and grief is still real, even if the old man is lying.

I've read on another channel, maybe on an article, that in Korean (maybe Asian) culture, it is respectful to pass a drink to someone by using both hands. When Gi-hun gives Il-nam the water, he uses only one hand, showing how far his respect has fallen for him already.

Even though the old man joined the game, he will never truly feel how everyone else feels playing the game. He was never really in any true danger of losing his life. He never had to feel the desperation of risking one's life to play the game and going back to play the game. He never had to feel the fear of going back to a reality that is unforgiving. He never had to feel the burden of failing your loved ones when you lose in the game or the guilt of winning. That is where the fallacy lies because he will never "feel the same thing".
@Game_Masters
@Game_Masters 2 күн бұрын
Maybe he was dead inside far long ago/ poor ect.. It could be that he had a similar backstory to that poor man that no one was helping before midnight. (in his case no one helped) Edit: The last game is the 7th game and it draws a parallel to Genesis: "God rested on the 7th day". There's also another hint, like the old man saying: "My son has a birthday in 25th of December" (which is the date people celebrate Jesus' birth). The old man technically won the game, because Gi-hun should go out to help the poor man. With all the money in the world, he stands there and bets on the life of that poor man, instead of helping him himself. It's a paradox. You should trust AND shouldn't trust people.

I feel like he was specifically spared for the marbles game. I don’t see how he would have gotten out of Tug of War for example. To an extent, the Dalgona game and the special brawl game too. Another player could have simply killed him before intervention, and I suppose they could have somehow slipped him a new sugarcookie during the Dalgona game if he did fail, but I don’t think he’d do that. I think he was genuinely risking his life, cause as he said himself, although he has so much, he has nothing, and just wants to have fun again. So although it’s commonly agreed that the twist at the end was pretty shit regardless, I’d say he probably just made an exception after becoming Gi-Hun’s gganbu in order to teach him a lesson later. He sort of respects Gi-Hun in a weird way. TLDR; his life was probably actually on the line cause he didn’t care much for living and wanted to have fun, until he made an unexpected friend and wanted to see where he’d go after he (potentially) won, basically.
@kazquala
@kazquala 2 күн бұрын
However I think you’re right about him not feeling like the other players, even if his life really was on the line. He didn’t have a reason to win, he was probably expecting to simply die anyway and was cool with that, meanwhile other players are fighting tooth and nail for the slimmest hope of winning. And even if he did win, he’d just be winning back his own (and his contributors’/partners’) money. You can see in the first couple games that he’s really enjoying himself, he doesn’t fear dying, besides he know he will pass very soon anyway.

The bet was actually about showing Gi-hun that he was no better than anyone else. Gi-hun chose to use that mans life to win a bet and get what he wanted. He could have left at any time and saved the man himself, but he was more interested in gambling to get the information he wanted. Gi-hun lost the argument by choosing to bet in the first place.

@Zorak9595 Here's a very easy way to refute that headcanon Ill-Nam knows Gi-hun is a good person he most likely acknowledges that HE is the exception to his beliefs but could the same be said about OTHER PEOPLE was the point of the game. GI-hun going out to save the guy wouldn't have proved a damn thing in that aspect and if he had gone all the way downstairs and out the building there's a chance Ill-nam would have let himself die faster out of spite and Gi-hun would have gotten NO answers or closure. This headcanon is just people trying to justify their beliefs that Gi-hun is no better than the creators of the games despite the fact that he was someone who had enough compassion for others to be willing to forsake WINNING The game at the last minute to save his friend despite everything he did.

If you look extremely closely you can see that the old man was never in any danger. In game 1 he was never highlighted by the doll's targeting (green for safe red for dead). In game 2 they would have just not shot him even if he messed up the pattern. In game 3 his shackles to the rope didn't have locks on them. And as we seen in game 4 he was never shot and decided to stop playing since the glass bridge would be too big of a risk.

What I find very interesting is that in the hospital scene; Il Nam has Gi-Hun become the very thing he despises. Gi-Hun is a wealthy VIP friend of Il Nam's watching one of Il Nam's games unfold and is betting on the outcome of the Game. Like the VIP's there was nothing stopping Gi-Hun from using his wealth to help the homeless man; he could have called for a taxi to pick up the homeless man; he could have went out and brought the homeless man into the hospital; bought the homeless man food and even got him a place to stay like a hotel room for the night. At that moment Gi-Hun is just as guilty as the VIP's that were watching and betting on him playing. Imagine being that homeless man knowing Gi-Hun a wealthy billionaire (in Korean funds) was watching you freeze to death for hours; doing nothing to help or assist you; all while betting on whether or not someone would save you or that you'd simply freeze to death. Gi-Hun got so caught up in getting revenge on Il Nam; that he overlooked the fact there was nothing stopping him from saving the homeless man and winning the bet; but instead he for that moment was a wealthy VIP betting on an outcome of one of The Host's games.
@ScorpioSW
@ScorpioSW Күн бұрын
I see it differently and think it's more that Gi-Hun mentally doesn't have that money, it's blocked by his guilt and the effects the games had on him. In his mind that money is not accessible which is why he has been living the way he has the past year and he still sees himself as being unable to help anyone, including the drunk on the street. All he can do is hope Il Nam loses and someone helps him. Seeing that happen and realizing there is light at the end of the tunnel is what snaps him out of it and he then realizes he can do good with the money.
@kamatz83
@kamatz83 Күн бұрын
@@ScorpioSW Even if that's true, he could have tell Il-nam to F himself and go help the guy himself. The bet was that SOMEONE had to help the man, it never stated that it couldn't be either of them. GiHun may think in his head that he's a good man but her mom's illness got worse and worse because of him stealing from her to bet and forcing his mom to work long hours on her feet. What little effort he does at the end doesn't change it was his fault. Same with his daughter, even after the "light at the end of the tunnel" moment, he ditches her again. Rich or poor he is who he is, a gambler too focused on himself.
@nfdsouza
@nfdsouza Күн бұрын
@@ScorpioSW This! Gi-Hun had been broken during the games and for the last year since he "won". He was barely functional. Everything he cared about had been stripped from him, including his faith in humanity. Although he had billions of won in his bank account, it was mentally inaccessible to him. In his mind, he wasn't a wealthy VIP, but saw himself as a powerless victim in a cruel, inhumane world. Moreover, this game/bet with Il-nam about the fate of the drunk/homeless person was really bringing to a head Gi-Hun's perception of the nature of humanity, and whether there was any good left in people. Does *anyone* out there care? The questions Il-nam asked him about his belief in humanity were as important for Gi-Hun to have answered as his questions about Il-nam's role in the games and reasons for establishing and playing in them. Gi-Hun couldn't go and help the drunk man himself... he needed his faith that there was some goodness in humanity restored before he felt empowered to take an interest in life, living, helping others (Cheol and Sang-Woo's mother), and ultimately deciding to take on the Front Man and the "Squid" organization.

You guys made it to the end!! I loved the reaction. The players were preyed on and exploited because of their financial hardships. The real villains were the old man and the other VIPs who used that hardship as a game to be played. People hate Sangwoo, but he played the way it was supposed to be played and to help his mother. He truly regretted and felt guilt for disappointing her. The old man was the one who manipulated everyone, knowing he wasn't in any real danger. Gihun is a gambler. And, he went back to that, just on a bigger scale. So, HE abandoned his daughter, yet again to gamble.

I think a lot of people watching (including me) have trouble understanding how the squid game works, which makes the end fight a bit confusing when Gi-hun doesn't kill Sang-woo and instead walks away. He's walking towards the little wedge area that the attacking team are supposed to reach in order to win the game. That's why the guard lifts the gun to kill Sang-woo - as soon as Gi-hun steps into that area, he wins the game, and Sang-woo is eliminated.

It was a crazy ride watching it again through your eyes. Thanks for making such entertaining reactions. Kinda sad it's finished but hope you will react to Season#2 🤞. Thanks and keep smiling👍🙂🇨🇦

Can't wait to watch you react to season 2! I loved it and even more after rewatches. I love how we never realise that Squid Game is actually not the name of the whole 6 games, but only of one of them (Red light, green light - Dalgona - Tug of war - Marbles - Bridge - Squid Game). They also never call it like that, the games are just referred to as "the game" or "the games" by the characters, the frontman, even the VIPs ("the games in Korea are always the best"). The whole tv show is named Squid Game, because the 6th one is the most important for the show: we see Gi-hun and Sang-woo play it as kids at the start, they say that the loser "dies" and the winner has the best feeling in the world, and here at the end, we see them again, playing this game as adults, but the death is real and the winner has the worst feeling in the world.

It's true that Squid Game is the name of the final game that decides the winner, but the organizers also refer to the records from the annual games as "Squid Archives" as seen on the binders in their records room.

51:00 - why would Il-Nam know the games beforehand? he wanted to experience it, not cheat it through, you don't get the emotions if you know what will be the game and others don't. Also need to point out - someone did frame by frame analysis, and Oh Il-Nam was marked green on "green light red light", as if he was whitelisted somehow. And when there were fights between contestants during night time, Oh Il-Nam stopped it. He didn't have a pager or a phone or some means of communication, he climbed up and started to scream, and the frontman obviously knew who he is so he intervened. Of course at first watch you don't pay attention, you think that he is just an old guy and organizers decided to stop from empathy, but on second watch/when you remember - you realize that he used his influence to stop the mayhem.

Squid game is taking people who are homeless, jobless and desperate in life. And the benefit of what their doing is to give money for the winner of the game and change their lives and they even have to sign the agreement from the start not knowing their organs can be donated for the people in needs.

I really like the writing and it has quite some parallels with the work of fellow South Korean Bong Joon-ho. It works on the superficial literal story, a man struggling with life offered a chance out. On a TV narrative level it keeps each character's arc and plot developments interesting. On the social commentary level, it puts a harsh lens on how we organize our society and in particular capitalism. On the philosophical level the choice to use children's games is brilliant imo. Because we are all raised to conform to society we are born in, we accept that the way things are is how things should be. By reducing life and death to a result of a kid's game, it is no different from the systems we built over our history: religion, laws, economics, politics. All these are lines in the sand with rules that we all agree on. Many rules make sense and benefit everyone. But some rules only benefit the few (the rich). Because we believe in the game, we accept the most unjust loopholes and that there are winners and losers. Many believe that for them to win/succeed, others must lose/fail. It puts faces on the victims/losers of such systems, makes it work on all scales of the story and meta commentary. Not everyone will see or want to see those layers. But I am very impressed with the result. Not only compelling characters, story and setup, but also a very real message.

The first time I watched the finale, I didn't like the Il-Nam twist, at all. But after rewatches I've come to appreciate it--it doesn't really change his character, because he never really lied. Gi-Hun gave him that childhood feeling he really wanted. And, I love the parallel: Il-Nam AND Sang-Woo both reminisce on the fun they had as children right before dying--which closes the gap, that Il-Nam mentioned, that no matter how rich or poor, after awhile, you become just as sad as any other person. I still think there's some problems with giving that role to Il-Nam, but narratively I've come to appreciate it (especially now that it's not the "ending" of the show; seeing where it goes and all).

One piece of miscellaneous information in passing: If it is to summarize the negative aspects of the social culture of the three East Asian countries, Japan would be 'Meiwaku', China would be 'Guanshi', and Korea would be 'Ojirap'. 'Ojirap' has the meaning of excessively doing good deeds to others and invading other people's personal space, and in Korea, there is a perception that the more ojirap you are, the less you can actually take care of your own life. As you know,Homer Simpson is a character that satirizes middle-aged American men. Likewise, Seong Ki-hoon seems to be characterizing what Koreans implicitly think of as Koreans themselves.

I'm like you guys, I didn't watch GoT or TWD or Breaking Bad when it first came out because of the same reason. The hype. With The Walking Dead, it was mainly because I wasn't into zombies; with Breaking Bad it was me thinking, "really, now they're making tv shows about making drugs"; and GoT was just because... lol All it took, tho, was watching the first episode of each of them, and I was hooked. I learned my leasson, and joined the hype for Squid Games. BTW...I was furious to find out about #1, Il Nam. I cried my eyes out for that old man. Screw him! 🤣 Edited: Yes, watch S2. It's good.

Do you guys remember when the lughts were iff, it was "bedtime " and people were taking each other out, the old man started hollering and screaming something, i forget what. The lights immediately came on and they put a stop to the mayhem. That was one thing I found odd. When the players got sent home and the old man kept popped up, sorta odd. When they didn't show his death i thought it was weird but I thought it was because....he wS old😂😂. Anyway, even with the odd things that stood out to me, I NEVER thought old dude was a plant. Oh Il'nam didn't say both rich and poor and bored, he said rich and poor have no fun in their lives. The rich is because they're bored. The poor is because they're struggling so much the stress crushes any hope for fun. It's a terrible comparison. It's a nonsense comparison. But it's also the same kind of comparison we hear from rich people who think they're in the same position as people in abject poverty because they might have to give up one of their many houses etc. It's a complete disconnect from any meaningful view of reality. That's what makes it good (IMO) it's a completely crap reason that indicates they don't even see how messed up they are and don't see the poor as really being people. It's social commentary.
