Their knot based language is based off of a real writing system from ancient South American cultures. It makes sense too since you can wear them and they'll tell people your name, status, etc. The craziest thing is people have tried to study and decipher the language but none could until a professor mentions it and one of his students just goes full Abed Nadir and deciphers it over a couple weeks. He compared the knots to Spanish documents of what's basically census data, and it aligned perfectly with the knots. And the kid wasn't even majoring in that field. Yes! Was just going to leave this comment, so thank you for beating me to it. To add to what you said, knotted rope was especially valuable to the Incans because of their vast trade network. The Incan road network has often been called more impressive than the Roman roads, given the fact that it was constructed almost entirely inside the Andes mountains, and spanned a comparable distance. Also due to the mountains, the wheel was never widely used for transportation. Instead runners would travel the roads for days at a time (slower traders used llamas and alpacas to transport goods). Point being - if you were running on the longest, most difficult trade network in the ancient world, you didn’t want to be carrying a whole book with you. Much better to tie a rope to your pack.

I bought this game more than a year ago in EA, and I have over 230 hours, almost all of it alongside my sister. We hop on a video call, get on the same server, and we'll wander for several hours. It's 99% peaceful and calming, I love the artwork and music. You can explore, scavenge and forage, you can take goods from one city to another to try to turn profit. The lore is more than just history, there's hints of politics and intrigue that's over your foreigner head, but it's also an entire culture about knots and tea and lost magic. We love to take a minute on our Travels and sit and make tea. But there are also hidden corners and undergrounds, these screens that are absolute gems in the world, that can be intense or make you feel like you stumbled upon something incredibly secret and special. The Underbelly is one of the most amazing, mysterious places I've ever found in a game, and we spent days trekking and mapping it. It makes me hopeful for what the devs plan to add to the rest of the game. Yes, it's EA, occasionally there's something buggy or silly, trees taking up space and not fading, minor bugs with inventory, but it's not prolific, and there is so much interesting and unique and positive, and it's just so cozy to slip into every few months when there's a new patch. I am so excited to see Splat cover this.

@@GameTimeWhy Yes, it is online only, you play on their servers, which are max 7 players at a time. So you might see other people very occasionally but a lot of times they're even hard to spot as a player unless you get an emote. There's about 3 dozen picture emotes in game and that's the only way to communicate without outside tools. But I know required online is difficult for some people, I do not know if they ever plan on an offline mode. 🤷

@@GameTimeWhy That's fair. I feel like I've gotten my money's worth with 230 hours. I am hopeful that there will be more content and more adventures to come. I think multiplayer is a unique facet of the game even though it's actually antithesis of MMO. To me, calling it a "Tiny MMO" is a terrible misnomer and so maybe your totally right, it doesn't need to be online on their servers and they should "fix" that. I would be very sad if suddenly the servers were gone and I couldn't play at all, but that's life sometimes. Sometimes the journey ends and you can't go back. I bought the game to try to support the devs and make the journey last.

One man's boring is another man's serenity. This game is absolutely gorgeous, has intriguing lore going for it, always seems to have some secret thing happening somewhere, and is definitely a fascinating play - I grabbed and played it nonstop for a few weeks when it first dropped, took a bunch of screenshots (which I generally never do.) Kind of reminds me of The Longing (another extremely niche, fascinating game.) I should pick it up again, see what's new. I believe the devs commented that there's some events that are limited time only, before the big city that's quarantined opens up again which is supposed to be around 1.0, if I remember right? Might be worth mentioning.

I am a backer of this game, the art direction convinced me they had a great vision. I have 158 hours in this game split across 3 characters. Now I wait for a full release, the first play through of this game is truly enjoyable. Take this game slow, this is a game about travel, brewing tea, and making sense of the clues you pick up along the way.

As someone who dabbles with watercolor, this game is amazingly beautiful. I really like how the inventory and icons have the kind of slightly washed out or muted color palette with a watercolor look, but then the gameworld/foreground/background itself is more like oil or acrylic paint. Really nice sense of coloration, layering, and texture. The colors may not be super vibrant in most cases, but that's okay to have a more muted palette since the instances where something does have some vibrancy just makes it pop or stand out all the more. I like the idea/concept of the game. Might have to look into this one in the future.

this game is right up my alley, it's interesting to see someone who doesn't vibe that much with its peculiarities play it, cause most of the stuff splattercat isnt fond of is what attracts me, the esoteric stuff, the real time day/night cycle, the slow walking around that beautifull world, being surprised by events, I love that stuff, It really gives a sense of actually traveling. It's not for people who suffer from FOMO, you just gotta let go and enjoy the ride. Like many say, it isn't for everyone, but if its for you, oh boy will you love it I would be disapointed to see them streamline these mechanics because this game fills a niche that doesn't have a wide selection, closest to this I can find is Kenshi and Outward and even those are entirely different beasts. Thats the joy of indie games, there is something out there for everyone

The tying of knots as a way of conveying meaning is really interesting. It immediately made me thing of 'See' The TV series with Jason Mamoa where everyone in the world is blind, and thus, tying knots is how they pass messages along, provide 'signage' and such. I think this is just quite beautiful and the world needs more works of " brave" creativity like this. Art is what is at the outskirts of the known. Its purpose is this: to enlarge and expand our collective field of view and I think this is just what the narrative of this game embodies: to travel and find out. I’m just glad the devs are still working on it. I remember they were having funding issues and had to cut a lot of the team. I’ll have to reinstall. When I played the boat travel was buggy and there was someone I was supposed to meet at night in the gambling den I could never find and I couldn’t make a profitable trade to save my life lol.

Looks interesting. I like the slower pace actually. Seems more realistic. It's not like a lot of the other RPG 's where you have multiple open quests going at once. I feel it does need to be played in small snippets and you're not really meant to experience everything that is happening in the world because you are not the main character. You're a new member of a culture learning how to fit in and thrive.

Funny. Knotted threads is how the incas comuunicated and kept track of things, that was their entire 'written' language. It is very intresting and we still don't fully understand it even if it was used up until the 1800s

The Incan Empire used a system very similar to what is described as the written language for land management and taxation... not sure if the layman was able to understand/do it but it is so cool to see someone make a system like this. I’ve had this game on my wish list for a long time and couldn’t remember exactly why, so I’m really happy that you did a video on its splat. And since you did now I know why I put it on there.: this is exactly the kind of game I love and never can find. not everybody wants action and fighting and violence and nerve-racking graphics. Some of us want something to unwind with calm down with get immersed in enjoy beautiful scenery that makes us feel like we’re out in nature and just be peaceful but at the same time use our brains. Book of Travels has potential but the lack of chat really screwed it. It’s a game that is clearly meant for roleplaying, but instead it forces you to play a mute. There’s also not nearly enough emote cards to communicate with other. I should add that there is also no friends list, so if you meet someone in-game and have fun, there is actually no way to keep in contact with them. You just spam the broken heart emote and go your separate ways. It’s not just depressing, it’s frustrating! Just a massive oversight to make an “MMO” that you can’t meet people in. That’s the whole point of the genre and why this lovely game can’t gain new players or retain old ones.

This reminds me of another play through I watched of a game that is very similar. It puts more of an emphasis on exploring and travel while using a similar system of using context clues from interactions and such to assign little quests and lore building. Sadly I don't remember the name but it was really kool. For anyone who might know it was a had a rogue-like element to it as well and has a cartoony isometric top-down view of the areas. You start your quest by getting a staff and the enemy is like a rival empire that is trying to destroy it but elemental deities are protecting the homeland from invasion by stopping them from advancing. There was also a neat culture system where towns with different races and such had different cultures and system for diplomacy where how you were treated would differ depending on how they viewed your actions. Things like that would persist with the rogue-like element of the game where if you died you'd have a new character but they were called to the staff as well. Would love to remember what the name of the game was called.

Love this game. It's so nice to have something like this dive into every so often. I think the devs have set themselves a massive task to populate the world with enough stuff to make exploring and revisiting places interesting long term. But I am absolutely here to watch them have a red hot go. We need to let people push the boundaries and make something niche and interesting because the thing itself is worth making. Like the gameplay I think the game itself is as much about the journey as the destination. The other day they added some upstairs rooms to buildings that have been in the game since launch. I've always wanted to see what was up there every time I came into town. And now I can. There is no reason to go there, there is no important crafting tables or quest NPCs. But now that part of the world feels a little more real. It's this sort of thing that keeps me coming back. The enormous potential for immersion in this game. I hope they are able to keep working on it for as long as they want to and fully realise what they are trying to do. I disagree that the player is a merchant. Most rpgs have you collecting bags and bags of stuff to then sell in town for a profit. The main difference in this one is because everything is barter, your "money" is more visible and important than it is in other games.

I am an early backer with 184 hours of playtime to date. Played a bit on EA release, but it had quite a few serious bugs. Then started playing it again this spring and couldn't get enough. There's a lot to be said about this game, but the most important is that it requires quite a slow paced approach. You need to take it all in, read the dialogue attentively, make notes and, most importantly, explore. There's a wiki and a good official discord, but try not to spoil everything for yourself. One thing I dislike a bit is that in-game events and vendor appearances are time-gated, and the in-game time corresponds with real-time. Meaning that some events take place, say, on Tuesday during daytime, and if you have a demanding job, it's very easy to miss a lot in this game. That caused me some frustration. But I will definitely come back after the next update or two (a recent one added quite a lot), to sink a few dozens of hours into it :)

Oh no. Time gated so closely, not even over like 2 weeks? This for raises the very important question, what timezone are we talking about? I suppose they don't rotate their events between all the time zones of the world, right? Your comment immediately made me feel like it's all about the US, because (no offence) only Americans would complain about something being "during daytime" without even mentioning _whose_ daytime we're talking about.

@@Nitidus They have US East and West, EU and Asia servers. And no, I'm in Europe on EU server. Events are on weekly rotation, some have random chances of spawning.

OfA lot to cozy, calming games don’t thematically call to me, but hanging out in this world seems super immersive. Intentionally slow gameplay is an interesting idea.

I haven’t played this game yet but it’s reminding me a lot of a game called Eastshade, where you go around the world painting pictures of what you see (but there are quests and a storyline too). One of the best games I have ever played and highly recommend!

Its not “anti”, rather a true RPG. As it should be. Rather then mindless hack&slash&cast with character improvement which warped the term RolePlaying to something else.

I'm not sure I'm seeing an RPG here in the sense that your ability to play a character is severely limited by the options of things you can do, ways to interact with the world, and choice. I'm onboard with the criticism of tropey cRPGs, just not sure this is the correct/most valuable alternative.

Thanks - a very interesting game. I have mixed feelings watching this though. It’s beautiful! I love the art style. Also, the pace and trading focus really really appeal to me. But the characters are so small, they’re lost against the neutral backgrounds. And the menu icons are too faint and tiny. So it’s the opposite of an accessible game. …..It’s ironic - you need the eyesight of the young to see it without getting eye fatigue, but the pace of the game probably won’t appeal to youth. Being a bit older, I’d buy it in a heartbeat if they address the vision issues. ……(I realize artistically they’re trying to give the landscape a monumental scale, but it still needs to be playable.)
