Keith I really respect your knowledge and skills, well done. I had to buy a tool grinder recently and looked at all available and ended up spending the extra to buy a US made Baldor grinder and shipping to Australia. Had to specially order a 240V one to suit our power supply.

I can not believe you just went through what I went through on my tool grinder, I too made nuts, and sleeves to get mine running somewhat true. The tables needed work on mine also , .... I screwed with mine for two days to get the dam thing to work and get the correct wheels dressed .... It seems everything I get I have to go all through it to get it to function

I watched this a while back. So recently, a guy was selling one that was barely used really cheap because he hated it so much. I snaged it, did the same things you did to it, now I have a pretty good good carbide tool grinder!

What brand / model is it?

Ya, I free float the tail stock, even lubing the ways just before use. You keep one hand on the tail stock, guiding it in and out even though the travel is automatic after the ingagement, you are one with it, and the other hand is one with the clutch, FWD & REV or your power. You become tuned and as the tap enters and exits you will become smooth and confident, like a manual screw machine...

Keith, I've been working on making a slow speed grinder and had similar problems. You have shown some things that i have yet to check. Great video. I think i need to add a rear spacer and then take a good look at the nut I have. Hang in there with the shop :)

Some lathes can change out gears and have metric capablities, most lathe's that have that feature, usually incorperate the metric feed rates in the gear box notes or reference plates...
@billdlv12 жыл бұрын
Keith I'm surprised you did not cut the threads on your lathe :) that would have been a neat trick. The manufacturer should have sourced a better nut, and a Bellevue washer. But, they probably saved some $ and that means more money in their pocket I guess. We have 2 wood lathes in the shop, both are supposed to have 1.-1/4 X 8 thread on the spindles. The faceplate from one won't fit on the other. They are made overseas, but are sold by a big name and were not cheap.....

I have a 3" grinder from HF that just hums so nice without a wheel. They have gotten better in secondary assembly, but I still have issues with the wheels and always have to grind them and true, balance and get to run circularly. I end up with 2.8 - 2.9" wheels lol

Well, I don't have metric thread capablities on any of my lathes. Have you taken peedee wires and or thread gages to check matched pitch, if to close to see a difference, blue the threads, for contact interference, may be the root or crown of the threads, you may have to set the face plate up in a lathe to skim cut the threads to suit...

i have one of those tools from the seventy's/eighties too !!!! ha ha ha ,...and a nice tool it is !!!!!

Keith yeah my next step is to measure the threads I knew they had wires for it but did not know what they where called. I will have to read up on it. We've got to buy more faceplates anyhow we don't have enough. When they come in we will have to see if the fit. Then I'll be able to machine one and not be down on equipment availability. Yeah I figured you don't have metric on your lathe we don't either. Is that "just" a gear change?

the thread is too coarse. A single lead coarse thread will always apply the pressure after torquing in an uneven manner. Fine threads do also but less dramatically. That's why parker pens ( back in the say when they really cared) made multiple lead screw caps on their expensive pens

You need to take a trip to china and teach these boys the meaning of runout and square. Im a total noob and I can tell that this machine was maee either by a drunk or someone that left his glasses home

the chinese operate a 1-2-3 crew, best crew is day workers that are extremely good parts and assemblers, 2nd shift is the mediocre, and 3rd shift is the garbage. why some of there stuff is excellent and other stuff is complete garbage.

In my experience, out of all the inadequacies with Chinese parts and machines, their nuts, bolts, and threads are the most atrocious examples of poor machining.

You can true a nut by screwing it on a bolt with a jam nut underneath leaving the bad nut proud and the jam nut synced with the bolt head to hold the bolt true and the threads of the bad nut in line with the shaft. Then turn both ends of the crooked nut. New nut is better, though. Looks like the Chinese use up all their reject parts on the Americans, yes?
