It was an unfortunate end to our Moreton Bay trip with Lady Emma. The swing keel winch cable broke, causing a swing through that resulted in a damaged hull.
With absolutely no fibreglass experience, I set out to repair our Ultimate 18 trailer sailer. Failure is just not an option.
Join us as we venture offroad, chasing landscapes painted with rich sunset colours and some beautiful swimming holes.
Get out there and travel Australia, it's amazing.
Also a big thanks to my wife Racheal (AKA - WE SHOOT STUFF PHOTOGRAPHIC SERVICES) and Amelie for there awesome photography. Check out her facebook page or website www.weshootstuff.com.au
Enjoy!

Always something to fix, but we wouldn't change living on a boat ❤❤

Baz you seem to be what a new owner of a trailer sailer is all about. I dont even know if there is any new ones on the market, but they seem to be 30 years old plus, and served a number of very satisfied ownesr in there day. I wonder how many of the sailers had never used the skills of carpentery, glassing, welding, painting the list is endless, but guys like you have keeped thes boats afloat for all those years. It is breath taking to see a hole in the boat like that, for the all round tinkerer like me, you seem fearless, and a credit to the adventures person your are. Plus I would rather you as my doctor, than the one that I have now, your like a sergon with power tools. I dont know why you dont have a million followers on your sight, love your style and contents. Thanks

Thanks James, you flatter me. I mostly just like to understand how things work and save money by fixing things myself, when I can. I generally find with research and patience I can tackle most projects and get a satisfactory result. Most of the time I'm quietly worried I've bitten off more than I can chew but usually patience beats anxiety. I feel like I have a responsibility to this classic trailer sailer to keep her alive for the next generation. And enjoy the journey. Thanks for watching.

Good job on the fibreglass 👍I had been wondering about the beard so I was impressed by your novel solution 😄

Thanks Lady's. The exercise band with the respirator worked really well. I didn't smell any resin or gelcoat at all. Happy sailing.

Mate that looked great at the end. Hard work. Did you use a flowcoat for the finish?

Thanks. The sanding was hard work but overall more just time consuming. Flowcoat for the finish, I'll show that in part 2.

Hi, have you done something similar to me? I'm no expert but happy to try to help.

Sucks when you do all that work and cut a hole in your boat, only to realise it didn't need to be done. I have done similar things on my own projects

That's for sure. I was determined to get a two sided repair though. There's a clue in the part 2 teaser at the end of the video.

These jobs always increase in scope as you dive in. Good thing you bit the bullet and chased it all down to source. You will have peace of mind when you are 5 nautical miles off shore in a blow!

Does your boat have a bilge pump?

Yes it has an 12v bilge pump. I'm also going to get a manual pump as backup now.

As you said at the time, its a tricky repair and it has been. I'm glad I've taken my time though and I'm very happy with the result.
