Time to replace the standing rigging on Lady Emma, our Ultimate 18 trailer sailer. With no rigging experience, I enlisted the help of Sparcrafters in Melbourne to reproduce the rigging. Then it's up to me to re-install everything and tune the rigging. And no boat job is complete without a test sail.
Get out there and travel Australia, it's amazing.
Also a big thanks to my wife Racheal (AKA - WE SHOOT STUFF PHOTOGRAPHIC SERVICES). Check out her facebook page or website www.weshootstuff.com.au
Enjoy!

You nailed that one Barry. Great work, I wish I had taken the time to learn from experts as I’ve made many mistakes. One thing I have done is using self amalgamating tape on the spreaders. It lasts a lot longer and looks nice and tidy.

Thanks Chris. Self amalgamating tape is a great idea, I'll have to buy some.

Yes, straight line of pull. With sail up the top of the mast is being pulled forward so the line of the "capping shrouds" pulls back or aft. The lowers stop mast pump. Tension wise as long as it's not sloppy on the Lee shroud when sailing you should be fine.

Thanks for that, I appreciate your input. It makes sense. I'm really happy with how Lady Emma is sailing with the new rigging.

Just replaced the upper shrouds only on my 7/8 rig Clubman 8 which had quite a lot of mast bend and seemingly an awful lot of tension in the rigg before I started messing with it. A bit of weather helm too so now I have changed everything and I'm setting it up in the yard I have noticed that pulling down on the uppers and hence the 4 stay bends the rigg but the lowers control the extent to which the middle of the mast can go forward and hence the bend.. the backstay does nothing on my boat except flatten the main as the mast above the forestay is super thin. When I first put it up all the mast bend was gone which I thought might be a good thing but then I became worried that in certain situations or stresses the mask might bend backwards and therefore snap because the lowers can't control inversion backwards. Is there therefore a safe amount of must bend that must be in there and hence a limit to how much the outers can be tensioned to firm up the forestay day and the lowers similarly tensioned to straighten?

I'm definitely not a rigging expert. I would suggest seeing if you can find rigging specs online for your boat. Trailer sailer place forum is also a great resource as well as trailer sailer cruising Australia on Facebook.

Hi Baz and crew, sorry I cant give you any advice, I am in the same place as you with your boat, only a year behind, and with a Farr 6000, with most of the maintenance you have compleated, yet to do. I have serched the youtube for some one like your self, that shows steep by steep how you go about doing things, on a Farr6000, but sadly there is not. Wether you know what your doing or not, its great to see you doing, and there us so many tips to pick up. How much in the ball park did the set of rigging cost. Thanks for your time to post a nother well presented video.

Hi James, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I'm finding that watching videos and reading about other similar boats gives some great general information and help a lot even if its not specific to your boat. Learning by doing is great, I think. The new rigging cost us about $1300 for the six stays. I'm glad we spent the money and had it done right, given it's so important to the safety of the boat and crew. Enjoy your Farr6000. They look like a nice boat.

Hey Folks, have you considered joining a Yacht Club like Geelong Trailable Yacht Club we have a few Ultimate 18’s there and it would help with your rig tuning . Also what better way to get your skills up with a group of like minded people who can assist and provide assistance on the water. We have options for cruising and racing. Westerly’s can be difficult at Geelong if you’re new to Sailing. With your shrouds measure them to confirm their lengths from each side. Looks like you have done pretty well. Last comment is look into the Ultimate Association they have a large knowledge base for your yacht. Hopefully will see you on the water. Regards Shaun.

Hi Shaun. Joining Geelong Trailable Yacht Club is definitely something I would like to do but at the moment a busy work and family life make it difficult to get the most out of the membership. Thanks for the tip on measuring the shrouds. We are members of the Ultimate Association and have made to a few social gatherings but have yet to make it to a cruise. I did take Lady Emma to Lake Eppalock for the Bendigo Classic before Christmas, so keep a lookout for that video very soon. If you see us on the water be sure to say hi. I always love chatting to other trailer sailors. Enjoy your sailing.

The jib sheet was pulling tension onto the stanchion. Are you sending it through the right block?

Thanks, that's a good point. It is the right block but maybe I should be running the sheet inside that stanchion.
