I agree that this is amazing guitar sound. So unique. love this band! The girls rock, Fred is so lucky to have found them. What a group of talent. No music since has ever sounded like this. Cant get enough!

Agreed! Ricky Wilson was extraordinary. A few of my friends and I are thinking very hard about putting a surf band together, and the only way I'm on board is if we can incorporate the B-52's in our playlist!!

Fred was making some poems before the band formed, he said a few of them became B-52s songs.

The Van Allen Belt.....they knew you can't get beyond it. The B-52s always sang in coded Truth. Always.

We may never see another band that can compare to B52s They are one of a kind lyric vocals and guitar the drumming too. 🌙

Thank you for posting this song. The video you made is a PERFECT match for the lyrics! I've always felt it's one of their finest, even though it doesn't get a lot of recognition. The B-52's excel at getting that otherworldly vibe down, probably because they themselves have always been kind of otherworldly! I especially like the keyboard/vocal riffing at the end of the song- VERY spacy and haunting!

I am proud to boast that I can sing all these words by heart, all these decades later. I also know what the Van Allen Belt is, which I can remember being discussed at the start of the Space Age in the early 1960s.

Yes I was 16 in '79 when this first came out , the following year when I was 17 , the were my favourite band along with Devo and 'Talking Heads' and I got the B52's on vinyl, this song and Rock Lobster; Planet Claire, are still favourites. Not so keen on Devo and Talking Heads anymore but B52's will always remain my first new wave band I loved (there are many more!) good memories :)

Only one of many opinions, I know, but sadly Fred's vocals don't do this otherwise awesome song justice, and his voice's sound mix doesn't help either. Just those guitars alone!! But I do like how he pronounces "Uranus" the proper way, as opposed to those 'politically correct' people with their "You-rah-nus" or "You're-in-us" :-P ;-)
@NYCOPERAFAN2 жыл бұрын
His vocals here are no different than on any of their other songs. It's a special kind of "speak-sing" quality that is his distinctive trademark balanced against the women's beautiful harmonies. This combination is exactly what defines their sound and is irresistible to their fans.
