This episode showcased something that's very real: that you can't shoulder everything alone. Jaune tried to do that to the Paper Pleasers, but didn't have the foresight to see what they really want. All in the pursuit of having some measure of saving people. Ruby has been shouldering a burden ever since the Fall of Beacon. And when her PTSD came to haunt her, she snapped. Bottom line is that I hope these two manage to get better, but I think that's asking too much.

I wouldn't really call it a lack of foresight issue. Jaune's basically gone mad over the years from guilt and solitude, and started projecting his lost friends onto random strangers so he could make a routine of saving them. Keep busy, don't think about what happened. Try to paint over the past with the successes here. Gotta be the great hero, because otherwise he'll have to confront the truth that he's a helpless loser of a man who didn't deserve the trust people put in him. The tree is bad! Literally everything in this alien land is just programmed to like this situation that's clearly actually horrible! The whole world is crazy, not him! He's finally saving people, the hero he wished he was. And clinging to that fragile role was more important to him than even finding a way out of this mess back to his real friends. Our duo of inexperienced yet overburdened leaders really could use some therapy but I doubt they have therapists in the Ever After.

Although considering Ironwood a lot of that training unavailable or he did not pay attention during the diplomacy, illegal orders, political dynamics, civic, and public relations portions as his base want to be dictator nature ignored it. That was my point when I saw this scène: Ruby as always been here for everyone on the team. And when they got lost, there was Always someone else to pick them up: Tai for Yang, Klein for Weiss or Sun for Blake. When it was Ruby's turn to endure, because of the loss of Penny and her plans never fully working since the Leo betrail, her team still had bigger problem to sort than Truly Caring for Ruby. Also, I remarked that Ruby use a very similar form of sarcasm as Qrow when things goes wrong. I don't know if it's intended, but if it is it's quite clever ^^

People are saying her team ignored her, but that's only partially true. Ruby has always been a beacon of light and hope. She was the good in everyone around her, and she got used to being in that position. She didn't talk about how she felt, because she was supposed to be there for everyone else. So even if they did ask her if she was okay, she thought she had to be okay for them. So she would lie, tell them she was okay and not to worry. But now it's gotten to be too much and she exploded. It happens when you've got all your issues inside you, along with everything else you've taken to help others. Sometimes you just miss what's happening right in front of you, and that's kinda what happened with WBY. They didn't push because they couldn't see the cracks that were forming.

Since volume 4 she’s been shouldering a lot, her teammates left her and she had to swallow it up and stay positive searching for a way to fix things, even after the trauma of watching two of her close friends die. Since then she’s only been adding more weight on her shoulders, now that she has lost Penny again, after having her back for a short time, and her plan to escape failed, she feels somewhat responsible. She has shown many times she wasn’t okay, not only this volume but in some of the previous ones too, but every time something bigger was at stake, and either she had to swallow and act like she was okay, or her friends shrug it off thinking “there’s no time for that, she’ll be fine”. Add to that that while being the youngest (apart from Oscar) she’s the one who always picked everyone up, and the one everyone asked to find a way to fix things. She is tired of people asking her for solutions, even more when she doesn’t have one. The line from episode 2 left pretty clear she wasn’t okay “Let’s stop pretending we know what we are doing”. In volume 4 while they were separated and they didn’t have to worry about saving the world, because they didn’t know about Salem, they all had someone to help them over their stuff: Yang had Tai, Weiss had Klein, Blake had Sun. But when it was Ruby’s turn there was always something bigger going on and there was no time for her, everyone just thought “she’ll be fine”. There’s just a point where it was too much, and now she isn’t precisely in the mood to cry over paper stars that wanted to die, or to cheer her sister for figuring out her feelings. Jaune is also not okay, he’s been alone for many years, and even if he had a lot of time to sort out his mind after Penny’s death and everything that happened, he couldn’t, and because of it he started losing his mind and had to find something he could protect to cope with the situation.

Ruby was already on the verge of breaking before the climax of Vol 8. With Ironwood going mad from the Salem revelation, Penny going haywire, and the city being invaded by Grimm, it's a wonder she didn't have a full on panic attack. This episode showcased something I think I've only seen infrequently. Coping over trauma. Where the individual will try to have a sense of control to hide the pain that happened to them in the past. Saving the Paper Pleaser and knowing how things will turn out if Jaune followed all the things needed to save them. Well most of us have no breaking point. But way more think they have no breaking point but they do. No breaking point people are normally left out of stories they not good to keep the drama going and someone who can't break is so different from the norm others can't connect to the character. Roughly 20 percent of population can't be depressed even if sent to Nazi death camps even that did not break them which is major reason they lived as they were made trustees as they could work harder than the rest.

Why do I feel like from the past following volumes, Yang lacked giving attention to her own sister, but to Blake instead? In times when Yang or Blake is in danger, they're the ones who were there for each other only. And when Yang fell first from the portal realm, Blake was the one affected the most and hugged her agressively afterwards when they meet in the ever after. It's like Yang or Ruby or both of them ignored the fact they were sisters and that their connection became distanced.

It wasn’t just because they ignored Ruby, or that she kept it all buried inside. It was also because of Jaune, and how they were so quick to address and comfort him, and while he’s had it about as bad as Ruby, if not worse, he was way out of line to blame her for what happened. Aside from her teammates, Jaune was arguably her closest confident as a fellow leader who’s been just as traumatized, and her first real friend at Beacon. Then he went and threw everything at her face when none of it was her fault. That was the final straw that broke the camel’s back.

Not PTSD if Steven had the he would have never recovered as you can never fight again with that total permanent disability. Trauma, emotional scars, large number of other more accurate terms can be used. PTSD is unrecoverable trauma permanent brain changes only a minority can ever get PTSD.

You know, some people have said that Ruby snapping at the others is justified because they’ve been ignoring her when she needed emotional support. But I’ve started thinking that maybe Ruby’s been bottling up her emotions so much that Weiss, Blake, and Yang genuinely had no idea how much she was suffering internally until she finally exploded… I seem to recall the others asking Ruby if she was okay and her responding with “It’s alright” or “I’m fine” earlier in the Volume.

No, it wasn’t I’m fine, she tended to change the topic like the first episode, or walk off in the second episode, but there were signs, her looking down, not really talking much, and others. Yang asked her 4 times, the first one was brushed aside, the second didn’t fully, the third, brushed aside by Blake, the fourth interrupted. Weiss tried to talk to her about Penny, but not only was Ruby not willing and not ready to talk about it, but people have pointed out how Weiss unintentionally put pressure on Ruby, making her feel like she couldn’t open up to Weiss as she talked about Atlas, which while Weiss isn’t wrong for doing this, it should’ve been the other way around. It also didn’t help that Weiss snapped at her in episodes 5 and 7.
