Another great episode OTLE! Feeling very grateful my mom taught me to tithe 10% back to God right away with my very first job. I can't get attached to what's not really mine! Everything comes from the Lord including my paycheck! Giving 10% back immediately reminds me of this truth and supports Gods message of love reaching more people. A win, win 😊. It was hard to give back 33 cents of my $3.25 an hour wage when I started working way back in the early 80s but commitment to this practice has given me immense peace in knowing God will always provide and not so coincidentally I've always had what I've needed right on time!

This is so fun to me...a spiritual argument for the built in human trait of Hedonic Adaptation (the great new thing quickly becomes the new normal). I will say, though, that I am willing to adapt to a most more comfortable place. Maslow's Hierarchy is the real deal for sure. My desire for prosperity is, TRULY and most sincerely, a desire for the deep pleasure of being able to solve problems for others and the freedom to pursue spiritual things, rather than struggle with the day to day which is such a terrible grind for so many.

That is so cool. I would like to be able to have wealth and help people. I don't know if I would. My question is how would you feel if you had to lose it all? I met a lovely woman who spent her life helping poor people buy houses, in a sort of financial education program. She was diagnosed with cancer and was sent to us because she was suicidal. Everyone thought she was suicidal because she didn't want to suffer or die. "You don't understand", she said. "I want to commit suicide because cancer treatment is going to cost me my house that I worked so hard for. It's not fair.".....Of course, according to your "Hedonic Adaptation", she probably would adjust to losing her house in time and be just as happy or unhappy as she was when she had it.
@jhod5554 жыл бұрын
@@fancynancylucille Hedonic adaptation is about adapting to good things, rather than bad. the astonishing human resilience most have is about adapting to loss. So who knows? Not all recover well from major loss. Of course, I'm not the person to ask. I would happily die today. ...my perspective is skewed. I don't like it here, and mostly I stay to prevent pain for others.

I'm not big on organized/marketable forms of religion/Christianity, but there are a few things from my younger days in the conventional church atmosphere that have really stuck with me. The phrase that I apply to this topic, from those days, is "God wants you blessed so that you can be a blessing." If I'm not in a position to be a blessing to others, it's for the sake of my own soul that I stay in more humble positions. I comfort myself from lamenting about why "the wicked prosper" by turning my thoughts to more eternal achievements. "He who dies with the most toys still dies." Heh :)

Very interesting the spiritual concept of wealth. Just as Divine Providence delivers her energy over all human beings without discrimination. Also each individual uses it according to his creed and thoughts. It is clear that the illusion of economic, political, social and even religious power is very tempting but also fatal to our hearts. When our hearts only focus on those things like the accumulation of money, power and social status (associated with each other) we slowly drift away from Divine Love and Divine Wisdom. Although all wealth is real and can be spent on more matter, it is only physical, instead what we feel within us, how we use divine light is what we really take to other spiritual dimensions. The message here is to be careful how we use the earthly world, not to get attached to material opportunities and the pleasure of an ego. But to the abundance that Divine Providence offers and the opportunity to cultivate the virtue of Charity for the benefit of the whole.

We all know that scripture, “the love of money is the root of all evil.” The LOVE OF MONEY being the key phrase. Everyone can think of exceptions, but I’ve worked with many wealthy political donors on campaigns, fund raisers and a career in government and the military. It’s been RARE to see these EXCEPTIONS. Even when i reached out nothing about God that was true came to me. I reached for help and guidance and nothing. Even internet search would not show up correctly. It wasn't until I lost it all and spent years studying the Bible, that understanding came. It was so surreal. While in the time of needing help only crap only evil came into my circle. I wish I could describe it better... It felt as I was blinded. As the bible says... Scales over the eyes... And for me, mind

If you want to feel good about yourself, do things for others. Then you have , in the eyes of others, a high rank. This can seem selfish but it is a way of loving self as you obtain happiness because of the good you do. Eventually, you will lose the need to have worldly rank as your self image is at a real high. Plus, you have found a treasure trove of oppertunity to feel even better. This is what I get from what you say. I suggest one ask God to give us this charity to start out on this so beneficial path and to stay in that path. There will be opposition ,but, charity is a gift from God from his Spirit and God will bring us through if we desire help from him. God can fill us with love. Have faith in that.

@@offTheLeftEye I think I read in the Koran that it is not up to us to judge what the person will do, as when people say, "Don't give him money. He'll just by beer and drugs with it." Yes, I am the eternal enabler. But if they say they need a sandwich, I don't question it. What they really need is the sense that someone cares about them. Maybe it's like pouring water into a sieve, that their self-esteem is so low that they will never come out of it. But I think unconditional positive regard is essential. I don't have much to give, so I try to stop to chat and say a kind word. Sometimes I get fed up with the struggling folks I know and say an unkind word. Maybe God can turn that for good. Maybe I will pay dearly for my indiscretion. I don't know. A perpetual conundrum for me.

@@fancynancylucille lovely thoughts, thank you so much for sharing that. It's a struggle for us all, but it does seem that even the small kind words really make a difference. I know a stranger's kindness can mean all the world to me, and really affect my day! It's a big deal, even though it seems insignificant! I agree with you, that unconditional positive regard is essential! It's a beautiful sentiment. And we all get frustrated and make mistakes - after all we are NOT God - but we deserve mercy. Sometimes I imagine God looking at us with the patience I (try to have) for my children, knowing we are working hard when we have a long way to go, letting us experience consequences as we learn to navigate this world and each other, but loving us and teaching us better behavior unceasingly, in subtle ways. And I don't think you have to pay dearly. I think wanting to do better, to love, is so powerful and will allow you to be led exactly where you need to be! Thanks for your honest insights. Paragraph 250 says it all. .........It explains why these certain superficial people use God to get what they want. They put on the greatest acts. But most of the time, God is not even in the picture. They seem to have separated themselves from the common way of life most people have to live. On the other hand, if they use their unique gifts to help other unfortunate people in the world , then that would be a good gesture. I suppose being poor and having a lot less than most people has put me in a different light or existence. It’s never easy to struggle but very easy to criticize others who have a lot more of anything. But it has been an experience or lesson for me that I’ll never forget. My daughter, who is 15 and I talk often about what we would do if we won the lottery and extend this same question to others we encounter. I often say to her... "Wouldn't it be great to win the lottery and give it away to charities and to normal everyday working people as a surprise?". To me, that would bring the greatest joy just knowing you are helping those in need or even in some cases, changing lives with the gift! Then we have asked others, "What would YOU do, if you won the lottery?" And a lot of them say they would travel, buy houses, cars, etc. Some say help family members, some say pay off debt and invest. but I keep coming back to spontaneously helping people. How fun would it be to stand outside a thrift store and hand out $100 bills? How amazing would it be to start a non profit to help the homeless or give to animal shelters? It all boils down to motive. Everything boils down to motive. Why do you pray? Is it for yourself or for others? Why do you help others? Is it for appearances or do you truly care? Are you teaching these values to your children? Are you also walking the walk, so to speak? All these things matter in helping others. Fantastic episode. I believe many people wonder about this question and you have helped clarify Swedenborg's message on the topic. Thanks so much! I don't comment often but I watch often and read comments often and just felt moved to comment here. Much love!

While there's nothing wrong with blessings, as in standing outside a thrift store offering $100, please do not underestimate the power of building people up. Challenging people in good ways to grow such that they're developing a means to take care of themselves and their families, and in turn, be a blessing to others and the surrounding community. I enjoy nice things as much as I enjoy giving to others. I feel often times called to give to the "least among us". I had an experience recently with a woman who made a difference in my life. She made a small purchase on my behalf and prayed over me and for me. It was quite the experience. We are called to love our neighbor. Remember there are many ways to love. And many different ways to give. I advocate the idea of teaching a man to fish more than giving him a fish. Nothing wrong with giving a fish to satisfy his immediate hunger, but what about his hunger tomorrow? Build him up. Build up yourself as you build up those you encounter.

To me, money is not about 'things'... it's about 'security'. I am not rich, but the money I have I keep invested and in the bank. I am told often that I can't take it with me... and that is true. BUT... I have no idea what my needs will be ten years or twenty years down the road and I want to be sure I have the essentials like a roof over my head, food, and medical care. I do not want to depend on government handouts or charity. I'm trying to be responsible for myself, which I think is right to do! I don't care about fancy clothes, jewelry, fancy cars, or if I have better things than the people next door.... but I do love a good prime rib every now and then :) On another note.... 'rich' is a relative term. I thought I was 'middle class' until I journeyed to Asia. That's when I realized that compared to many of those I encountered in Vietnam I was so freaking filthy dripping rich in comparison.

Hi Paul -- Thanks for sharing these reflections and for sharing a bit about your own journey. You are blessed to have a calling of helping others who need help! As for your question, here's a quick answer. Swedenborg does not ascribe to our spirits being in existence before our bodies are. So our arrival on this earth is the beginning of our spirit. How we live on earth is our opportunity to choose the direction of our eternal existence. Every choice we make, either in the direction of goodness (God and other people) or in the direction of evil (harmful behavior stemming from a self-obsessed focus) is building the character of our spirit. So our job here is to bring as much conscious reflection as we can to our daily choices. When we cross over, and the concerns of this earth fall away, we'll be able to have a clear view of our motivations and intentions, and that will lead us to our eternal home. Swedenborg asserts that all humans were created for heaven, but God values our spiritual freedom more than anything else, so we can opt OUT of the Heaven Plan, if that is our true heart's desire. Otherwise, God and the angels are always working with us and for us to have heaven in our minds and hearts and all around us. Thoughts? Thanks for being part of our community!

I wonder when we pass on, how would we look and feel? The same as when we passed (old and tired)? I suppose it’s different for people who pass on in different circumstances and may pass at infancy, some at childhood, some as young adults and some as old age. 🌸🙂❤️
@offTheLeftEye4 жыл бұрын
From all that I have heard, no one feels old and tired when they cross over. People who cross over in old age instantly feel more energy, and then gradually begin to look younger. I've heard stories from people about visitations from their elderly loved ones soon after death, and they have said that instead of 80-something the person looked maybe 60-something, and in radiant good health. So I think there is an instant upgrade, and then a more gradually return to a youthful look.

Even if they openly admit, as a minister, with the title "Reverend", that they care more about social climbing than they do about helping those who are beneath them, whom they judge as "undeserving"!!!!!!!!! Such a person, a minister, does not give money to those who are in need, but lends it to them from his discretionary fund and expects them to pay it back. He makes sure to let them know how undeserving they are, and parades his knowledge of "religions" which amounts to the history of the social workings of Christian denominations and their political relationships. He does not include the Church of the New Jerusalem, of which he has never heard. Yeah, I am resentful. Last time I saw this guy I sang, "In the Garden". He proceeded to do his sermon, turned to me in front of the entire congregation and iterated, "Because Jesus is NOT in the garden!!!!!" Yeah. Right. Unitarian atheist.

A youtuber I followed had his wife leaving him with his small child and she just left one night and took basically half his fortune with her. He explained why it happened and he said money was a prime issue, he had too much of it. To boil it down she had the financial freedom to leave whenever she wanted. If they were a "regular" married couple she would have had to stay BUT they could have worked on their marriage. Also did she really love him for him or his wealth? He eluded to that. He said his parents had to stay together for financial reasons and their marriage was rough at first. With time their love for each other grew and because they didn't have the options to call it quits they nurtured a wonderful loving relationship together. Sometimes not having the freedom to do something is what's saving your soul.

I love swedenborg but sometimes he falls short on why the world is the way it is and how to overcome it. It was great that his wealth allowed him to do the work God set him. But globally, in his lifetime there was terrible living standards for the masses and the rich were a small minority. If you need a lifetime to develop spiritually, it wasn't going to happen on earth. So praying to God was compulsory at the time( you were forced to go to church). But God was allowing poverty so you could be spiritually rich but physically destitute. A few days ago I was told life is about balance. You can receive and it is good to accept out of love. You should give to those who need because you yourself have recieved out of love. But you should never take from someone. Mentally, physically or spiritually. That's all I got and my heart asks why the takers get away with causing a lack in others to the point of causing death and pain. There's no boundary unless God wants US to set a boundary. Any thoughts out their.

Just for context in the state of human thought processes. If wo/man’s purpose of their earthly sojourn is to discover and verify the divine within self. Then without a permanent state of randomicity in human affairs then there would be no reason to search for God. And therefore no reason for the soul to take it’s Journey. Therefore, human spiritual evolution would be in stasis. Therefore, randomicity is an essential for spiritual growth. It causes the questioning like is God compassionate and interventionist or aloof and omniscient. Even with my own students I will not give them the answer when it is plainly obvious to me. There is a inherent value in the process of discovery. These states of greed, envy and social rank are the first hurdles to overcome in your personal spiritual evolution; and like Job your metal will tested. One of the final steps is giving up your personal dependence and addiction to external pleasure. The wise will always come to the inevitable conclusion that pleasure (whether it be physical, emotional or mental) is a incidental state of existence not the purpose of it. I hope what I am saying is helpful and understandable.

It all depends on where we are on the scale of maturity. If we're on the low end, then we want what is, in the end, harmful to us and others. Small children want candy and potato chips available all the time. Pain, on the other hand, leads us to ponder and reflect on life, which leads us to a higher level. Are you familiar with Benny Hinn the very successful Evangelist of the Prosperity Gospel which preaches that if you just give lots of money to "God", then you'll get ten times that amount back from God. Well, he's changed his tune and says that was all bad and not Christian. But that's sort of the extreme of wanting wealth and position in life as a gift from God because God wants you to be rich. Baha'u'llah says just the opposite: O Son of Man ! My calamity is My providence, outwardly it is fire and vengeance, but inwardly it is light and mercy. Hasten thereunto that thou mayest become an eternal light and an immortal spirit. This is My command unto thee , do thou observe it. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Thou lookest upon them that are dear unto Thee with the eyes of Thy loving-kindness, and sendest down for them only that which will profit them through Thy grace and Thy gifts. ~ Bahá’u’lláh ~

Swedenborg does say it's alright to enjoy material pleasures - but we need to have balance about what we hold as most important in our lives. Check out this short clip, "What Did Swedenborg Say About Money?" kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4aoeWealMZpmM0

This is a pretzel indeed. Which comes first, worship of self, then accumulation of riches and hoarding it? Or accumulation of riches, then becoming selfish, then hoarding? I think of those multi-billionaires who could with one donation they would not even feel, ease horrific suffering, like Bangladesh's wretched water situation, where children are drinking filthy, excrement contaminated water. And yet they don't. There are studies that acquiring wealth changes the brain to diminish empathy. So I think, were the Lord to gift me with wealth, would I become someone else and end up hoarding it too? And how do selfish people manage to amass such wealth? What is the way they acquire it? Why and how are they given such extreme power over resources that are withheld from suffering humanity? It's all very backwards it seems.

@@RobbieTullos I hear you. And to be clear, that part of us that gets immersed in selfishness is the lower self (which is all we would be without opening up to God). We also all have a higher self that is where God's unselfish love dwells inside us, and at the times we open up to that, then, that love is in charge!

I certainly don't envy the rich and powerful; they all seem quite miserable even from my vantage point. But it is extremely unfortunate that they can inflict the kinds of evils they can on everyone else. That isn't God's fault, but it's a hell of a thing.

Trust on God built on the basis of experience with Him in reality. Believe on God based on heoretical views will shake with time. Humans are too weak to experience God if He Himself does not show Him to His creatures. But God never show Himself to people who have opposite qualities to Him. People who have lust, anger, greed, ego and materialistic attackers are not worthy of His experience. Once a person has God experience, that creature become abundance in everyone. Rich people are rich because they work hard nothing comes without effort in this material plane. Moreover, material wealth has no value in front of God. , it's temporary perishable including our body, planets etc. Eth beyond materialistically is permanent that is God and our spirit. Some people in temples are much more wicked than rich people. Do you think they deserve wealth of any kind with such malice heart
@offTheLeftEye5 жыл бұрын
I hear your concerns. Sometimes people just DO have wealth, through no work of their own, through inheritance or what-have-you. Sometimes people with ill will have wealth. I think the point is that sometimes these types can accomplish useful things in the world, even if their motives aren't pure. But of course we can never know everything that's in someone else's heart! God alone is working on that level with every single one of us.

@@offTheLeftEye wealth or anything materialistic or physical is temporary. Humans cannot raise to supreme conscious level. If you will see from His level, whole cosmos is passing away or perishable. May be we do not think so. For Him materialistic things are no more than grains of sands. For Him morals, spirit growth is important that is permanent. Moreover if anyone get anything in inheritance, do you not think that it's destiny or past good karma to be born in such family? Evils who have money also destroy after sometime. History tells us that how powerful emperors fell down so low and die. Many poor get richer in few days times. If someone hurt many people in past lives if he was not able to pay for pain suffering, that man will come back to go through all that suffering. We are living in highly organised system that is not visible to us due to our own physical mental limitation. Many poor people do hard work but exploited. Their exploiter are creating new karmas for next life while victim will be paid off next time. @@eyeopeningtruth7518 Yes, I completely agree that worldly wealth and material possessions are very temporary, and they do not matter in the end. So, they are only temporary tools that we can use for good or for evil. And yes, how we choose to use things on earth affects our spirits, and our connection with God. For God, it is the good virtues of the spirit that matter. Thank you so much for sharing this perspective here!

I need to know that an actual Heaven exists, one where everything is perfect, because this world is beyond horrible. Aging is beyond horrible, and we suffer in these mortal bodies. Why would God create an imperfect world, for a perfect one to come? It just doesn't make sense at all.
@offTheLeftEye5 жыл бұрын
Hello, Vicky! I hear you, this physical existence, and dealing with physical bodies, can be very challenging. Yes, Swedenborg witnessed that an actual heaven exists, where we will not have to deal with these kinds of struggles any more. The physical world was originally created in a state of harmony, without suffering, but that original harmony became corrupted as humanity gradually made more and more choices that were selfish and greedy. So, today, we deal with the fallout of that in all the challenges of physical life! Here is a short clip about why we need to start out in a physical body in order to have a foundation for an eternal individual identity: "Whats the Point of Having a Physical Body?" kzbin.info/www/bejne/gonNaYRoi9qDnNU

Yes, Penny -- Swedenborg writes, "We are engaged in true worship when we are devoted to love and caring -- that is, when we are devoted to doing what is good in our daily lives." Does that ring true for you?
@fancynancylucille4 жыл бұрын
Doesn't the Old Testament sort of teach this? I often notice that such people as these that I meet in Churches are usually more oriented to the Old Testament and a superficial interpretations of, say, the 23rd Psalm. Is it the book of Micah that has that verse about opening a window in heaven to send down wealth? They go to church every Sunday and teach Sunday school, then something bad happens and they literally flip God the bird and give up on religion. Fine. Well, I don't blame them. The "God" they worshipped let them down. I'm usually fine with my simple life with few possessions and a love for internal things. But then I am ashamed of myself in front of my more successful relatives. It looks like they are more moral. Maybe they are. It looks like they work harder. Maybe they do. But I was literally diagnosed by an employment specialist as not having a profit motive. And he wouldn't help me get a job, because he said he could not in good conscience send me out to any of his clients! Go figure! In addition to Swedenborg, I am quite enamoured at the moment of the writings of Maurice Nicoll, who says that "life" itself is not the "goal". He says that the Gospels are about something else entirely, not about advancing yourself in this life. But they sure can be helpful if you want to overcome something like alcoholism. ON THE OTHER HAND, (and I have been trying to get you guys to explore this for me), Swedenborg himself was HIGHLY successful in the world, he had a lot of respect, knew a lot of famous people, and had kind of a lot of money. (Just not "filthy" rich!?) And I am sure lots of people thought he was a very nice kook.
@offTheLeftEye4 жыл бұрын
I resonate with not having a profit motive! If you play the comparison game (deadly for me), it can sometimes be embarrassing. I know a little of Nicoll's work -- wonder what he says about the Gospels helping with addiction? So what is it you're trying to explore about Swedenborg and his earthly status? Maybe the Lord needed someone for the job who had a trustworthy reputation, good connections, and enough financial security to be able to do the job without pay. What do you come up with when you explore it for yourself?
