Very nice numbers for a drought year! Wish I could say mine was anywhere near that. Can’t wait to see the cotton/soybeans.

Nice job finishing up corn harvest. Today (October 7) in Iowa, i am halfway done with corn. I finished soybeans last Tuesday. Whats surprising all of us around here this fall is how dry the corn is. Much of it is coming out at 13-15 %. Crazy year but the yields for both crops have been average to a little above average.

I'm sure your soil health journey will help you with compaction over time . Last year, I ran an inline ripper over some sandy areas of the field that seemed to help this season, but this fall, I checked with the penitrometer and the soils tight already. This is my third year of multi species covers.

Seed consultants and Augusta seed are strong companies. Hybrid 85 is probably the most resonable ive seen. That ripper with the cover crops will be a winning combination. Open her up and fill it with root structure after.

seed companies labs, paperwork, and test plots are perfect world scenarios, some of them even run drip lines in their test plots to show full potential of the seed but that once again a perfect world they aren’t stressing it. so in all reality 300 plus dollar bag of seed is really worth 100 bucks because in real world it’s worthless, salespeople can talk up their seed all they want but its junk.

How has your yield been so far this fall 2024? Initiatives including waving (canceling) property taxes for farmers that own less than 1,000 acres should be put in place; this would decrease inputs and there fore help with their overhead. This must be instituted as small farmers (defined as anything less than 1,000 acres totals) will be struggling this year to turn a profit, most corn farmers are looking a $1.00 per acre loss this year, extremely tragic. How are you fairing / projected to fair after all inputs? Curious what your net profit per acre will be this year. Thank you for what you do!! -October 13, 2024

With the soil structure you have if I was farming your land I would come in and heavy disc it then come through with bottom plows then in the spring disc it again and every five years it starts over again you have a good soil structure but it needs to break down underneath the ground roots don’t do anything on top of the ground
@griggsfarmsllc
@griggsfarmsllc 3 ай бұрын
That would absolutely destroy my soil structure and organic matter I’ve built over the years. Not to mention send tons of topsoil into the Mississippi River

Be careful there. If you trim back the trees for the landlord they might increase the rents since the property is incrementally more valuable.

It drives me nuts also that as soon as yiu get a hybrid figured out, they discontinue it. Im going through that right now with Kruger 11-60. Have you ever planted DeKalb 59-82? Its been my best for 4 years in a row. Im not sure if that hybrid works in your territory or not.
@griggsfarmsllc
@griggsfarmsllc 3 ай бұрын
59-82 is what I was cutting the first couple of corn harvest videos. First year trying it. It yielded great in the bottoms but suffered a lot from drought on the hills. Tough to get a good read on it. There’s plenty of varieties that yield great on the good soil, but very few have much top end AND are reliable on tough ground. Pioneer 0912 was the last one I could trust on thin ground
@case1020
@case1020 3 ай бұрын
@@griggsfarmsllc I know what you mean. The last hybrid I had that worked well on all soils and in dry conditions was DK 62-97. Of course they canned that after everyone figured out where it worked lol.

Why couldn’t you plant the seed you are harvesting now? Is it a GMO thing?

Because it is a hybrid it won’t pollinate correctly. Need male and female plants. Also it’s illegal due to being GMO
