I always just chalked it up to him having fun and not really taking it that serious. While he is still having fun (at least I hope he is) with these levels, it's a much more serious type of play. We see this side of him when he is trying to route out levels for the Green Demon challenge as well.

It’s such a strange mentality to go into making a level deciding that you’re not going to beat it yourself. I would assume most people think that there level is fun/interesting, so why not play it through it the one time that is needed to actually upload it? Putting dev. stars/keys means you either thought your own level was bad or was too hard to be fun, and in both of those cases you don’t upload your difficult, unfun levels to the world.

Because people who make Mario Maker levels are total assholes and/or Timmies who are like 7 years old and are bad at Mario but think their level is really good but can't beat it. Usually, it's just total assholes though who KNOW all this, and then turn their comments to "must beat the level" so they never have to feel bad for it.

How I see it is that these kinds of people derive a sense of satisfaction from a secret only really known to them that gives them an edge over the people that play it. Rather than being sadistic or an asshole I feel like it's an attempt at giving them powers that nobody else will have, kind of like their own little godmode or shortcut cheats.

It's people who suck too much to play challenging levels yet want to make challenging BS levels. Sometimes you'll get levels like a BS boss rush where the dev throws, like, 50 Bowsers at you, and those are effectively troll levels, but others have too much effort put into them to just be throwaway troll levels. They wanna be, like, the next kaizo - make the next best near-impossible challenge level - but they don't have the experience to know from a glance if a level is possible for a human nor do they have the skill or patience to test if it actually is possible.

I'll say at least the thing they changed in MM2 is you have to beat your level from the start and then again from every checkpoint (which resets red coins), which can get tiresome in certain level set-ups like the key one. So technically you have to beat the level at least once then more times on top of that. I think it's shitty when creators do that but in my experience it's aggravating to design your level around a check point and not being able to use that in your upload of it.

Gonna go out on a limb and say the dev star was originally put there to make the clear check possible from the checkpoint. Even with the eventual hidden key I wouldn't be surprised if that obstacle was actually impossible going backwards (ie without the reset door to make the timing possible/more forgiving). I suspect eventually the level creator just gave up on the clear check in general and the star is an artifact from when they were trying to be legit. ...Or they're just a poos. That fire bar obstacle just seems waaaay too trivial compared to some of the other tricks to require a star.

I actually find it somewhat clever though. "Hide" a dev star somewhere easily accessible so people think there is another hidden star in your level so they waste time hunting for a hidden dev path. I'd still keep it passable but keeping people on a dev path hunt seems like a clever way to make players spend more time running around

Simple do you know about the swimming precision trick in SMBWU where you don't hold either of the run buttons but you hold the jump button to drift underwater and then use the other jump button to move in more straight lines which lets you go between spikes more easily and allow you to go very slightly faster by going more in a straight line? It was in one of Thabeast721's tip of the day videos.
