Every time I watch these old musicals, I am amazed that how much hard work they put into them.

i am too and they loved it every minute of it to use Mickey Rooney as an example he did over 200 movies i'm not really even sure the number and as many hrs and how many movies he put out when he was younger he loved every second of it and wished he could do more i have no doubt that you will find a lot of the talent who did movies like this felt the same way. you don't see that many people wish they hadn't done a musical unless they couldn't sing and tried or if the film was bad like say the film Cats for example.

It is true that most professional actors in those days had training in dance and voice (including singing). I believe it is still true. Times SEEM to have changed because song and dance are not as common an element in today's entertainment productions as they were "back then." So we don't see as many actors singing and dancing. But that doesn't mean they can't. There have always been plenty of actors with considerable song and dance skill and talent that we never get to see or hear. So yes, most professional actors have more song and dance ability than the average person, and more than you will get to see. And yes, there have always been plenty of actors who never showed their song and dance skills even if they had then. (When did you ever see dancing or hear singing from Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor, Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, etc., etc., etc.? Selective memory has fooled you again.

For the past days, have been so bored. Told myself to just watched a comedy movie so i got my cellphone and openned KZbin. I accidentally saw a movie entitled Gentleman prefer blonde, Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell movie in the 50's. So i watched it. Mygosh! I was in awe. Marilyn Monroe is so stunning and beautiful, very feminine and graceful. And she is a great performer and a talented actress and singer.....I can't get enough of her so i searched about her. Too bad she left this world at a young age and she died alone 😢 Wherever you are Marilyn Monroe, you are very special and an amazing woman.

Other good Marilyn Monroe movies are "How to Marry a Millionaire", "The Seven Year Itch" and "Niagara". Also search for "Something's Got to Give" which is a pieced together short film of scenes she did for the last movie she worked on before she died. It was never completed, but if you want to see the entire movie and compare it with Marilyn's scenes, the movie was made with Doris Day and called "Move Over Darling". All of these movies are comedies, except "Niagara".

No one could produce a fluffy movie musical like this today even if they had all the money in the world. The splashy settings, costumes and luminary stars all in one movie... it is beyond today's wildest imagination or even replication. This used to be the Saturday TV matinee on channel 12 for years... shown without wide screen, I still loved it. Each star was THE BEST in their category. Thank you for posting this high quality print in rich full color.

@gyuuyomi. These artists gave their all to show business, and we are able to enjoy it all today! It was a tough life, but they did go all out with their art, plus the great costumes and sets. When I see what is being done today, putting operas in modern dress, sets which are banal at best, if there are any at all. I'm sure that's not what the composers had in mind. In anyone doesn't appreciate opera or ballet, I don't think lowering the standards will bring the audiences rushing in. I loved the way they used to produce them, with superb sets, costumes and wonderful performances. I'm glad so much was preserved for us to still enjoy now.

In many old musicals the songs were pre recoded in a sound studio with an orchestra/musicians and then the actor/singers would lip sync them during the actual filming … even when the actor actually sang. I believe it was done for technical reasons to insure better sound quality.

So multi talented. There are few actors or singers today who could have handled the expectations of the old movies... Lady Gaga, Jennifer Hudson, Bradley Cooper, Kevin Costner.. What a beautiful set, what a magnificent choreography, absolutely mesmerizing! She sang "Show Business" in the show it was written for, "Annie Get Your Gun." This would have been an even better movie if a completely new score had been written for it. I remember seeing it when it came out. I was twelve in '54.

Betty Hutton sang it better in Annie Get Your Gun, imo. Merman's voice is just too loud and gratingly harsh.
@garypesci746
@garypesci746 2 ай бұрын
@@DreamingDarlin Ethel Merman was in the original Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway. She did a lot a Broadway musicals and had to have a loud voice since they didn't use microphone headsets the way they do now, which they have to use now because singers today are not as good and can't project loud enough for an entire theater audience to hear them.
