This performance had us completely hooked from start to finish. The energy, the vocals, and that spoken-word section at the end? Total goosebumps! It’s more than just a song…it feels like an emotional journey. We were totally in awe of how powerful the whole thing was, and the way the crowd got into it just made it even better. Totally awestruck!!

"A princess and a panther by my side These are Territories I live for I'd still give my everything to love you more". Nightwish is their own genre and no other band comes close to the level they are at. Never, in the history of music entertainment, have a set of skills and talent collided in such powerful manner. Tuomas is a true genius as a composer and with lyrics.

Enjoyed your reaction! Song of Myself is inspired by the poem of the same name by Walt Whitman. Tuomas is a big fan of his work and wrote the spoken word section in the style of Walt Whitman as a tribute to him. On the album the song is composed of both the musical section and the spoken word section but live the only perform the musical section but display the lines from the spoken word section on the video wall. At the end of the live performance you can see the last line, And there forever remains that change from G to Em, on the big screen. This video was made by a fan by combining the Wacken live performance from the Showtime Storytime DVD with the the spoken word section from the album as a tribute to Ann Waychoff who passed away about 4 years ago. Ann was a big fan of Nightwish and the mother of the Nightwish Army. She started the tradition of welcoming first time reactors with some information about the band, a tradition that Gabrel has nobly continued in her honor after her passing. We are forever grateful to him. Ann was also largely responsible for making the Nightwish Army the welcoming and generally positive space that it is. Many fans have mentioned how she would privately help them with what ever struggles they had in their lives. Song of Myself was her favorite song and so whenever we here it we always remember and honor her.

Thank you for reacting to a real favourite Nightwish song of mine. There are things in this song, notwithstanding the poem at the end, that speak to my soul. Floor’s presence on stage is absolutely dynamic. She commands the stage like few others. I love that she sings a lot in her low register. We all know what an amazing range and when she goes operatic or belts it’s off the charts but listening to her rich lower range is gorgeous. You mentioned Marko’s singing and you’re right that he could a front man in any band. That slide up he does is an added perk in the song. I agree that Emppu really does have a unique sound and style to his playing. Jukka is one of my favourite drummers to watch. He is so dynamic with his playing. And Tuomas? What more can be said. I give the video editor credit for the shot near the end when they’re doing the pyro blasts. The 2nd is timed and filmed brilliantly with what Floor does. I recommend going to that section and watching it again. The poem? Well, because of personal experiences there are so many parts of it that turn my soul inside out and brings me to tears. Sorry I went on quite a lot here but this performance really hits me in many ways! ❤🤟🫶

Tuomas loves the poet Walt Whitman, who wrote Song of Myself - poem in 52 sections. So this song was inspired by that poem. A lot of bands have songs with lyrics that are very secondary to the music. Nightwish never does - the entire message is important. Thanks so much for playing the whole video. Have really been enjoying your reactions.

Love your background visuals. Always fun to spend a Saturday morning with both of you. Emppu plays rhythm along with the drum accents. Tuomas composes these songs in that style. This is a fan created video. The ending poetry in on the record, but not done live. For obvious reasons. This is based on the inspiration for the song. A famous poem from Walt Whitman of the same name from 1858. We could see it on your face Gringa. When the poem started you looked emotional saddened and troubled. Tuomas always makes us think about our experiences in life from the human perspective. Is it a wonder why Nightwish fans are so avid and totally invested in the music and lyrical messages?

"sometimes within, is piano black - piano black, over pristine waters" are you kidding me ? Tuomas is one of the only song writers who can come up with a line like that. This song just reaches out and grabs ya. This song always takes me to the calm moonless nights at sea a 1,000 miles to the nearest land with the Milky Way glistening off the ocean. The same sky Columbus, Magellan, Drake and all the rest used to navigate their way. Humbling doesn't begin to define the sight. Marko and Floor together was magic. If you wanna hear Marko blow your minds, check out "High Hopes" from the End of an Era concert. Also, if you haven't heard Nightwish new song "Lanternlight" check it out. It will take your breath away. Rest In Peace Ann, we all miss you.

R.I.P Ann Waychoff mother of the Nightwish Army. June 28th, 2020 This is your song. If you ever have to explain the Groove in Metal to someone - play this tune. Until the Breakdown hits you with a 10 ton hammer it is all fun and games. But then the slow chugging monster with the machine gun riffing takes over. And for every Metal Head this lights up the day. Awesome….Imho one of the best songs ever. Sometimes the sky is piano black…. Emppu's rhythm style : very, very percussive. Heavy on the palm mute and gate (you know it's muted because he can/does let it ring out and sustain when it's needed...e.g. the little bits of feedback/sustain in the mid-section here) I think the EQ'ing on his guitar us just as interesting... both Nightwish and Ayreon carve out a big sonic space between about 300 and 800 Hx for the vocalist(s). I personally think it's one way they make the live shows so 'listenable'. By not boosting the mids in the guitar, it become much easier to hear the vocals. Also notice how Tuomas' keyboards are often emphasizing the upper notes. Not Nearly so mush chord-grabbing in the C3-G4 range (where a lot of the vocals occur)...Looking at Ayreon for a similar example, listen to what the band does when Floor pops onto the stage during her brief bit in 'Everyone Dies'... EVERYONE pulls back a bit and opens up that mid-vocal frequency band. And the result is that glorious, dominating vocal presence. Anyway.. It's 6 AM Do you know where your Inner Arrangement Nerd is? - - I do... he just woke up in my third cuppa coffee. Take Care, youngsters.

Marko the bassist really also is a great singer; he had been the leadsinger of the metal band Tarot for a long time. His duets with Floor are gorgeous. If you want to listen especially to his voice watch "High Hopes" (Helsinki 2005, tribute to Pink Floyd), "While your lips are still red" (Wembley 2015) or "The Islander" (Tampere 2015). Or if you like it really heavy "Master Passion Greed" (no live performance). Unfortunately he left Nightwish 2021 for personal reasons. He is still missed (especially by Floor) although Troy does his best to take over at least some of his singing parts (backvocals).

Song of Myself is part of the concept album / film music Imaginaerum. The daughter of the main character has become estranged from her father because he didn't tell her everything he should have told her. When he gets dementia, he starts writing it all down. This becomes a work of art that he calls Song of Myself. The creation of Song of Myself is a race against oblivion and death. In the end, he loses and wins at the same time. It is inspired by the poem of the same name by Walt Whitman. It was only played live on this tour and the quotes were shortened. The quotes are from Song of Myself and are spoken by the band members and the actors in the film. There is more Disney on the current album. Tuomas has perfectly fused band and orchestra: Nightwish - An Ocean Of Strange Islands (OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO)

That music brings to my mind a vision of a Valkyrie and a squad of vikings, and the vikings all have machine guns they are using as musical instruments. Just da da da dah! And then ethereal vocals, then open fire again.

????? - I have never heard that ending! Are all other reactors just skipping it? Anyhow, I am not a poetry guy. Much far from that. But some poetry do hit me - and this did. Maybe the preparation by Nightwish helped some. But the poetry was a collection of short poems (or at least so it felt) that all had something profound and unexpected to say. I am in another mood now.

This song is a tribute to the poem in 52 chapters, One for every week of the year, " Song of myself " by Walt Whitman 1819-1892.(one of the co-founders of US poetry). The 7th line of the song is ""Of mermaids, of Whitman's and the Ride""". The extended official studio version of this song has, at the end, a poem as a tribute to Whitman and his style **so it only seems that it is a collection of poems** ,made by Tuomas, There are video's with and without the poem, on the blue ray " Showtime-storytime " the song is without the poem ,so it depends on what the reactor takes.

The quality of this Nightwish *Wacken 2013* performance can compare with The Warning's recordings at *Teatro Metropolitan* in 2022 and at the *PEPSI Center* the year after. You can practically chose any song from these three shows and get TOP QUALITY.

Probably the heaviest and angriest song, both musically and lyrically, I would say is "Master Pasion Greed" from the album "Dark Passion Play". That song is said to channel the anger that the band felt about Tarja's husband at the time (not confirmed by the band though). There is no music video or live recording of this song as it has never been played live, and never will be. - This is a fan made vide of the song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJzMk2Oaft-cjs0&pp=ygUebmlnaHR3aXNoIG1hc3RlciBwYXNzaW9uIGdyZWVk - This is a lyric video of the song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnyWeWptpZWpqM0 And here's the lyrics: www.nightwish.com/songs/master-passion-greed

@TJandTheGringa you should react to Wings of Darkness from 1986 and then if you want the 20th Anniversary of the song. His solo stuff and side projects.
