The toilet paper splitting might be because at some point you only grabbed one of the ply's, so by pulling both ply's the next time, you are the one un-doing the paper. So a potential fix to this is to grab the outer ply and make one full trip around. This may help re-match the ply's so that they stay together.

chiming in on the California roll thing...I think there's only one way to make a true California roll. it's crab, avocado, cucumber and cream cheese. anywhere I've been in the Midwest it's made this way. I was in Mexico and that's how they served it as well
