What a treat! Not only got another great video from you, but also got a happy trip down memory lane. Back in November 2019 we were staying in Avirmore for a few days, and one morning woke up to thick fog and I knew Craigellachie was where we needed to go. I took one of my favourite photos from Scotland around the spot you were by at 21:50. We then went to the top of the crag and were treated to a cloud inversion. For a couple of people from the sub-tropical Gold Coast the entire day was such a treat! Thanks for a great video Henry, and I second your plug for Aviemore and it's pubs, and the Cairngorms in general. We also stayed in Braemar and that was also wonderful, though much smaller.

I have to admit the one camera I really love using is my Olympus OM-1 35mm slr. Yep, tis a 1970's film camera and it's a joy to use. I wanted one when I was a kid in the 70's and swore I would own one some day. That day came a few years back and I am not disappointed, it was truly worth the wait. I don't use the built in light meter as I haven't had a battery in it for ages and it's fine, it's a fully mechanical camera. I have an old Gossen Trisix selenium cell light meter that is still accurate half a century after being made and it is definietly a great experience. There's a lot to be said for having a "Batteries Not Included" day out. Just me, my OM-1 and a couple of Zuiko lenses. Bliss!

I loved your comment about the camera taking you back to when you first fell in love with photography, that was my experience too. I switched to Olympus from Canon FF around 4 years ago and it completely reinvigorated my photography. This is not to denigrate any other brand, ultimately it's finding the one that works best for you (and I genuinely believe in this day and age there's no such thing as a bad camera), but the Olympus/OM-System just suited me to a tee. Love the vlog too.

I sold all of my Canon full frame gear 18 months ago and I invested in Olympus and a mixture of Olympus and Panasonic lenses. I did it to reduce the weight and bulk l carried. As a person with mobility and health issues and it is the best move I have made. I still get awards in international exhibitions and sell prints. The quality is great and the EM1 mark 3 and EM5 mark 3 are feature filled and convenient and unobtrusive in busy areas. Lovely images as always and so much inspiration and enthusiasm.

Definitely get that buzz you talk about from my Fuji XPro 1. It's an 11 year old camera that I'll take anywhere, any weather, generally chuck about, and get great pictures from. What's more, after years of abuse, there's nothing that's happened to affect the quality of the pictures. Your point about just treating it as a tool is definitely part of the magic.

Congrats on new camera and thank you for the wonderfull adventure. The first 2 photos i do like the first one a wee bit more, focal distance brings out more detail, however the lighting on the right side and reflection of second image seemed to give a scale of the scene. To answer Your question at 28 min, i have used my phone (Nigel gave me idea) usually on more intimate scenes, it seems to help “focus” on scene/subj.

Yesterday I picked up my OM-5 model from 2015. It’s been sitting in my den all these years. I went bananas over how much fun it is. More simple than the latest gear, it was sheer joy to fool around with its basic features. A great camera. Many times I wonder if people fully use a camera’s capabilities before they jump to a newer model just because it is new.

Hi Henry! Another great video. It's a lovely area there, I know it well. Great to see your transition to mft. I've always enjoyed your videos, irrespective of what camera you were using (the choice of camera is far from the most important element of photography!) but as a mft user for many years I can relate even more to your videos now. (Lumix user myself). Use the same Peak Design clip on my rucksack when walking or cycling, shoot handheld the majority of the time and general just enjoy being out and about in the countryside with my camera with me. And yes, it's great fun! 😊

Just recently got a em5 mark ii ifull spectrum and it is so nice and never go out without it now with a couple of IR filters. Morning Henry! That was a really great video, thanks for taking us on a good tour of that nature reserve, and sharing some really superb images! For me personally, the primary enjoyment is being at a beautiful (and peaceful) location, and the photographs that I try and capture are more to retain a good memory of where I've been and then to share with others. As you say, the camera is just a tool, knowing what elements of a scene to capture is the real challenge.

I am trying to recognize anything in Aviemore from Google Maps that I can identify but no luck. I stayed there in 1977 at a small lodge/pub on the main road owned by a distant relative, Jimmy Ross. Back then the ski facility was very new I believe. Of course being from Canada there had to be a curling team from Canada on the ice that day, but mostly in the bar. I was driving through the highlands staying with several aunts and uncles. Sadly my last time in Scotland and seeing any of them.

I love the OM5. When I got mine, I literally just received it, and headed off on a trip to Japan. Best travel camera as far as I am concerned. Only had the 12-45mm F4 PRO lens with me though, but it was perfect for a lightweight kit. I am now retired but one of my prior consultancy places was with MacDonald Hotels, and I was supposed to visit Avemore through them, but my trip got cancelled. I started out photography with a Nikon D7200, which is funny, because I remember, you had the same camera when I started following the channel. But I could just never really get to love using that camera. It was a brilliant piece of gear, but not intuitive at all for me. Then a couple years later I got myself a Fujifilm X-H1.. and it just got glued to my hand. It taught me to adore the process of taking an image. There's something about these retrostyled cameras that's different. Great video!

Great video Henry with some cracking images. We always use Aviemore as a stop off for an night or 2 on our Scottish roadtrips. Around Loch Garten and Loch Eilein not far from the town is pretty good too. Regarding the enjoyment of photography....absolutely! it doesn't matter what tool i am using for the job, i just live and breath it, it gets the excitement and creative juices flowing whether out in the wilderness or overcoming challenges in the studio. Thats why i specialise and shoot across a wide variety of genres and not to restricted myself as a professional photographer/ retoucher in to shoot one aspect of the industry. Looking forward to the next one.

You certainly looked like you were fully enjoying the time with new gear and i know what you mean by feeling child like with something different and the pleasure it gives. Impressed with the hand held "running water" shot and how sharp it seemed to be and always fascinated how you manage capture your hand held panoramas. Really nice images Henry. I remember going back to a Fuji bridge camera from a DSLR around 2010. The reason for doing so was that I'd just got a new dog and couldn't handle all the heavy gear as well. I found myself automatically 'helping' the bridge camera do what a DSLR would have wanted and as a result stopped worrying about whether or not it could take the shot. Meanwhile the dog got taken to new places and so did the much lighter weight camera. I didn't give up on DSLRs as their image quality always had a higher potential, and with a certain lens the filters could be shared. New cameras get you out and about more and that's probably the best reason to get one.

I love all of Scotland for exploring and finding surprise photo locations. However, for me, it's only late October through to Easter. The insects are just too bloodthirsty vicious buggers the rest of the year. When it comes to Aviemore, it's also a good central spot for visiting distilleries - a must for me in Scotland. Some of those places are also very photogenic in a surprising and very different way.

I agree wholeheartedly with you, photography is much more fun these days, because the camera lets me take the shots I want, with an absolute minimum of fuss and bother. As a fellow sucker for running water, one of my favourite places is the Linn of Dee, outside Braemar. It's easy to get to, and equally easy to lose an hour just watching and listening to the water 🙂

I have a used OM E-M5 with a pancake lens as my car camera for those opportunities when I don't have my main camera. Great cameras. I have 3 olympus cameras including a modified for IR E-M10. Great video, lovely shots.

My favourite ever camera was a Fuji bridge camera, went from that to Sony and just couldn’t get on with it at all so traded it in and have gone back to Fuji with the X-T5. Early days as not used it much but think it’s going to be fun again. It’s brilliant (and inspirational) to see a pro photographer using what would be classed by some as a non pro camera and getting such enjoyment and great results from it 👍

The feeling you have with your new camera is similar to what I had when I had an IR converted Nikon D50... it wasn't the kind of IR that was totally B&W but let in a small amount of green once the red and blue channels were swapped in post processing. Almost point and shoot instant masterpieces!!! I mistakenly sold it on for a newer IR converted Nikon D5300 but there is something about the CMOS sensor and IR that didn't quite work for me (although having live view IR was useful) , and the 5300 broke on me recently so I now have a CCD Nikon D80 IR camera and the type of IR is suited better to B&W in camera conversion so it forces me to think a bit harder about the composition... really cheap to get hold of and fun to use.

Many thanks for sharing this with us Henry. It never ceases to amaze me just how stunning your photos are. Can I ask how the OM-5 & 12-200 F4 lens worked as a combination? Take care, stay safe and keep adventuring.

I last visited the Cairngorms back in the late 90's, when I was working at various whisky distilleries by day, and cycling the Speyside Way in the evening and at the weekend. I recorded my adventures on a brand-new Kodak DC 215, a mighty 1Mb beast! I published the photos on my long-since-extinct cycling website and, TBH, the photos looked pretty good. Would love to make a return trip with more modern camera gear (and a modern, lightweight bike) but, alas, life seems to forever get in the way. It was great to re-live those old days through your eyes - another fantastic video. Well done!

Loved this one Henry, very exacting on your thought processes for composition, very helpful. Beautiful area, your right it is good for the soul. When I go out in those beautiful places I have trouble capturing what I am seeing convincingly. It's videos like this that really help with the process of framing the shot. Thank you so much.

I agree a camera is a personal item. We all agree that it’s the photographer, not the camera. But, if I had one camera and one lens, I love the Nikon Z7 with the 24-120 lens. A light weight package for simple hiking.

Hi Henry loving the results from the first shoot with the OM system. I’ve found I’m taking my camera out with me more now than I ever did before. I’ve re-found my enthusiasm again for my photography. Just treated myself to 5he new 180-600mm lens for my Z7II . Absolutely love it. Keep up the good work mate. Graham

Nice Henri, loved the long shots of the trees and reflections. You should post them upside down once in a while to keep your audience guessing what's wrong ;-) I recently switched from Canon 6D Mk II to Sony A7R4. Lost some weight and size, gained dynamic range, low-light performance, megapixels, frames per second and I can use 3rd party lenses compared to Canon RF system.

The enjoyment comes from my lens’, I use a Canon EOS R, but my lens’ are made by Lensbaby… They are amazing…. They are built for the creatives… LOL They are not what a landscape photographer carries, not that they can’t be used for landscape photography but more for the street, portraits, etc…. And yes, I know the feeling of being excited when you view the back of your camera and it blows your mind from seeing the end result of a simple photo.

Glad to see your first experience with the OM-5 was good. I love my E-M1 Mark III. The lighter gear has been very freeing.
Photographers really shouldn’t do this…
