Dogs have different growls and barks for different things, lm sure most people realise this, but especially if you own one, and moreso if you take the time to observe your dog's behaviour closely, so that when you go to places like a forest, especially alone, where even THEIR imaginations can sometimes run wild, you can tell just by the sounds they make, and their body language, the degree of danger, or if they're just excited by what they THINK they're seeing and hearing. I never ignored any dog lve had, they are so much more than just your companion, they are a security alarm, a warning "device", and most definitely a life saver if you "read" them right. I live in the UK. Some 45+ years ago, we used to have a German Shepherd call Prince (RIP). A truly fantastic dog. He would never hurt a fly. However... One night, 11pm'ish, Prince was restless and doing exactly what this cattle dog was doing. Grumbles and "bluff Boofs". So my dad let him out into our fairly large back garden. A few seconds later, we heard growling, barking and then screaming. Human male screams. So dad and my older brother and I went out with torches (Flashlights!). Prince came bounding up to us, tail wagging and with someones ripped coat in his mouth. The police did find a bloke walking alone the road 30 mins later. Looking very shaken. Torn jeans. Shivering. Not wearing a coat. And it was -5C that night 8-))... Funny thing is, no one ever came back for their coat!! 8-\\...

It’s gotta be a sound, not a movement. I believe this because the dog looked away, like it was done hearing the specific sound and then snapped back to look again. It was a specific sound from that direction. And if you couldn’t see anything with the naked eye, chances are it was probably far away. As far as far could be. Might have been a gunshot, like I said the dog looked away and then looked back , like whatever it was focused on had ended and then suddenly reappeared , like a quick sound.

We owned a dog many years back, it was a cross from a very vicious street dog and a german sheeperd. We raise the pup the natural way ( as in a street dog ) no leash, cage and all. The pup grew big, sociable and gentle and I never heard it growl or bark. One night, a friend of my brother peeps through the open window and Rambo ( the dog's name ) attacked him without warning. It's just fortunate for that guy that Rambo listened to my dad's command to stop. We sold the dog the next day. I still remember this vicious dog together with our neighbors dogs looked so intently in the woods, lowered their tails and cowardly retreat back to each home.

A human can hear sounds with pitches between 20Hz and 20,000Hz. However, the average dog can hear pitches between 40Hz and 45,000Hz. This is the reason why a dog can hear a pitch that’s too high for human ears to detect. In general a dogs hearing ability is 4 or 5 times more powerful than a humans. A dog’s ear is made up of three parts. The outer part of a dog’s ear consists of the pinna which is the part that amplifies sound and transfers it to the ear canal. Then there’s the middle part of a dog’s ear that consists of three small bones, the eardrum and the Eustachian tube. The Eustachian tube connects the middle part of the ear to the back of a dog’s nose. Finally, there is the inner ear that has the cochlea which is the hearing organ and the vestibular system. There are about 18 muscles that control the direction and movement of a dog’s outer ear. This allows dogs to change the shape of their ears to capture sound. To put all this into some context, i dog can hear sounds we cant upto a mile away, they will also have a good idea as to what the potential danger is to themselves and owners. I have no doubt that the dog in this video was sensing danger, probably from a wild animal and was warning the owner without giving his/her position away to the danger outside. It is true that dogs do have a sixth sense. A few years ago I camped out in a large forest in the UK with my Belgian Malinois, she did the exact same thing as this dog did and stayed awake all night looking in the direction of the danger. We dont have the same kind of wild animals as USA which kinda of made me more nervous as to what she was warning me about. She never left my side.

I would have fired a few warning shots from the window. I've grouse hunted the trails of the MN northwoods in the last 15 yrs and there's been a few times the dogs stopped, ears perk up, and start walking backwards. That's when I start walking backwards too. One "creature" ran away from us where all I could see was the straight line it made through the tree that bent or broke. Could have been a bear. I saw one creature jumped from an aspen tree some 50yds away. It was black, had long arms and legs and the manner in which it jumped to the ground resembled a spider monkey. When the dogs didn't give chase, I just pretended I didn't see it and kept on the trail. Could have been a wolverine but it was pretty high up in the tree when it jumped.

I had something on the stove for dinner but I did stick my head out if the camper for a peek. Didn't see or hear anything. Smart dogs you got there. I was bushwacking in the woods with my dog once (not this one but another wild cattle dog type) and she stopped. I kept going and about ten steps later almost landed on a huge bull moose lying on a mat of evergreen bows. Thing jumped up and took off in a gallop. Happened in the blink of an eye.

Did ya ever go out in those woods to see what it is that dog is alerting on?

I did go out and look. About ten minutes after I shot this video, and after I had my dinner, which was cooking at the time. I left my dog in the camper. The black flies were as thick as I've ever seen them, too much for her. Anyway, nothing. Saw nothing. Heard nothing. Slept through the night.

That looks like a Heeler, I hv one, he’s my best friend. I definitely would not allow my dog out by itself what so ever. My Heeler is very possessive abs wound attack a bigfoot I believe to protect me. Please protect your girl at all times she’s telling you

Yes, mine too. My red was a rescue from a very bad situation. She didn't know anything other than heeling and protecting me. Bonded like you wouldn't believe. And knew nothing of danger to herself. The only two things I could get her to stop doing were heeling and protecting me.
