"Wait, so I HAVEN'T seen this one?" Nope. The one you described seeing was Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. That's the version of The Shining that Stephen King himself hates because it doesn't portray Jack as a sympathetic character, so King made this mini-series to be the better version, which resulted in it being the boring version because of how much in detail it went into stuff that no one cared about

True this one is boring but at least he was able to get his main character to be sympathetic something that Kubrick (no offense) failed to do.

In the original Shining, Kubrick made Nicholson and Duvell redo and redo their scene where Jack torments his wife; supposedly 127 times because Duvell didn't have the right emotional response for Kubrick's perfectionist vision. The take that was kept was when Duvell had a mental breakdown in the famous "Here's Johnny" scene. Ironically a similar thing happened in the Dark Knight with Heath Ledger's Joker where Joker kidnapped a Batman impersonator and was filming himself torturing him to death. The actor playing the faux-Batman's screams were genuine because Ledger was so maniacal and never broke character that the actor was convinced Ledger was actually going to hurt him.

Difference is Ledger was character acting while Kubrick was blatantly breaking a lot of ethical boundaries for a film director and constantly berating Duvell himself. Kubrick may have been a genius, but he was remarkably abusive towards actresses working on his films. Not in a predatory Joss Whedon way don't get me wrong, but he still did a lot of things that would probably have rightfully gotten him in actual trouble with guilds and unions these days.

This miniseries is the best example of showing how Stephen King is a good writer, but he's not a good _screenwriter._ It's like he seemed to forget that movies have visuals that say just as much as the dialogue, so you can/need to cut down on the filler for a short running time.

This is something I keep having to remind myself whenever I consider adapting the Gilbert & Sullivan operas to film, as the thing about stage plays is that they're roughly halfway when it comes to visual vs. verbal storytelling. Since you actually *see* the actors perform on stage, with sets and costuming, that automatically makes it more of a visual medium than something like a novel, but at the same time there's only so much visual storytelling that can be done on a stage the size of a small to medium-sized apartment, so much of the story is still carried out through character interactions and dialogue (and songs, if it's an opera/musical), to an extent that's typically not acceptable on film, so adapting a play to film usually involves expanding on the visual elements.

Honestly, if the original book is just like the movie, I don't see how that's compelling, regardless of the medium. They just keep discussing various issues and the pacing it terrible.

@ThePreciseClimber the book was actually carried primarily through internal dialogue and flashbacks. That’s what made it a difficult book to adapt faithfully

@@robertrothberg3003 Eh. Anime does internal dialogue and flashbacks all the time. :P
@robertrothberg3003
@robertrothberg3003 9 ай бұрын
@ThePreciseClimber3003 Not sure what you mean. Are you saying that’s not a good excuse for the quality of this mini-series. If so, I will amend my statement. It is very difficult to adapt a book like this into a typical cinematic style. Anime is very unique in that it provides the internal dialogue of characters. I don’t think that attribute carries over well to other styles. Honestly, I think the shining would have been better as a season long mini-series with several episodes. I also think Kubrick made the right decision to leave out the hedge animals and to switch out jack’s roque mallet for an axe.

There's a song called 'Aient we got fun" that was playing in the last part. He said, "I don't care if it doesn't make any sense. It's still scary." In the picture. It is a reference to the other Shining movie ending where Jack is in a picture celebrating with ghost people in the 1950s.

This a mini-series, NOT a movie. A mini-series was a TV series, but shorter usually 5-6 one hour episodes. Minus commercial they were usually 4-5 hours log.

I know a good ammount of people that actually like the miniseries ("over the movie?!" NEVER have I ever said that) cause... it's word for word straight out from the book. That IS impressive, especially in a world that asks constantly to big production's adaptations to be much more near the source material. This is an example of what to do, but not the perfect example on HOW to. Also, it is good we have a good rendition of Jack Torrance. Jack Nicholson is good, but... most (if not every) Stephen King's stories are based off his life experience. Yes, there was a time he was in time out from alchool and isolated from the world and YES took in consideration of hugging his family with sharp objects. So, put like this... if you, the author, see a character based of yourself being... nothing like yourself... you would be pissed and try to put a fix on it: this was Stephen's way to fix the Shining. Good ening: Shining has a sequel that recently got an adaptation (Dr. Sleep) which was decided to be direct follow up of the movie version. Dr. Sleep's movie take advantage of Kubrik's "wrongdoings" (to King's eyes) and fixes them into the new movie. With that, Stephen officially forgives Kubrik's movie and is happy that Dr. Sleep's changes semi-improved on it (like Dick being a ghost since he died in the movie, but not in the book; the hotel still standing in the movie so that now is Danny the one to burn it down with himself like his father did in the Shining book...). Happy endings for everyone (well, a part from the dead guys in the fictions).

Mike Flanagan really does seem to have an affinity for bringing the best out of King's work in recent years. And just being a great director in general. Honestly I still say they should've given him Superman (Flanagan has expressed interest in adapting the character). I love Gunn, and I think Gunn can run the DC Universe well, but for Superman specifically I would've preferred a more sincere and sentimentalist director, and Flanagan's great with that kind of emotion.

Stephen King stayed at a hotel, got drunk probably, and had a horrifying vivid nightmare about inanimate objects coming to life to try and kill him. The hotel he stayed at now rents that same room for about $300 a night, and has been named the "Most Haunted Hotel in America". It's the Stanley Hotel, in Colorado. Can't remember which city. Someone else probably knows it.

I agree the original Kubrick version is much better and superior, while I can see what King meant by him not liking that version and fixing it with this one and also while I can understand that some ideas could work (could’ve/could being key words) and also granted I’ve definitely seen worse movies while most of King’s bad movies/miniseries are crap but unintentionally hilarious which I probably why I kinda go soft on the man (well granted there’s another reason I go easy on him if not praise and defend him but I won’t mention it here for controversy reasons with another famous author who’s name I won’t mention) plus I have a good time with the unintentionally hilarious King crap, but sometimes like this where I see where he was going with in fixing one of his works he wasn’t pleased with, that doesn’t mean I (or we) have to like the finished product King and the crew came up with.

Derob... Derob.... (Bored). : ) The mini series had a few moments but was drawn out way too much to be worth watching imo. The Kubrick version was much better paced, but still a slow boil. It is superior especially for the acting. Then you have the book where weird as heck creepy stuff happens. Sometimes even at random. The kind of weird that makes its way in a Super Mario sunshine game.
