A little detail they didn't mention in the graveyard: there's no grave for Laura, which re-contextualizes her "Why should I?" in the hospital, if you don't already know the story or mechanics of Silent Hill.
@Xunkun2 жыл бұрын
And her "Huh, are you blind or something?" line-- well, given she walked from South Vale, on a path that has a gaping chasm if James tries-- it's clear we never see _her_ game world. But that line I took to mean there's someone/thing actively protecting her, that James, and therefore us the player, cannot see that would otherwise be in the shot.
@punishedbrak42552 жыл бұрын
@@Xunkun It's been my long standing theory that Laura's not a little girl at all. She's an adult/young adult, but she's actually *innocent,* contrary to everyone else we see in SH2 save for Mary. I've been in a lot of Hospitals, ICUs, and too many Cancer Centers; they don't keep children and adults around each other the way everyone seems to assume they do in order for Laura and Mary to have had any kind of friendship develop in the Treatment Center/Hospital. Mary had a "debilitating disease" - how would she have even met a random little girl in treatment? James doesn't remember her, either; it could be that James never met her, or simply had no care for her, as he was ignoring Mary's situation because of the Misery it brought him. I think that he's only Perceiving her as a little kid; something he's not familiar with but that he has an innate sense to try to protect, however misguided it may be through SHs distorted lens. It's the only thing that's ever made sense to me with the line "Huh? Are you blind or somethin?" After James asks why a *little girl* was on her own in the middle of town. It makes sense to me while fitting with the thematics of the game; it's also just as possible there's other people around, too, who aren't trapped in the personal Misery that SH solidifies and leads you to confront; Laura is half-in and half-out of her own depressing experiences and reflections due to her illness and her connections with Mary and James, but she's not lived enough/is old enough to have any real "Demons" or personal issues. That's why she can be seen by James in his world, but cannot see what he sees. That's really why SH2 stands as such a classic even to this day; it's ambiguous, but impactful; it never feels "artsy" for pretensions sake or "complex" for complexities sake. It's truly open to interpretation while still being a legitimately impactful and powerful Story.

I've seen a lot of people rag on Angela for being “too weird” and so on, but she's easily the most sympathetic character in the story imo. She killed the man who tormented her, and the whole situation broke her spirit. It's some of the most fucked up subject matter I've seen in a video game, but the trauma parents give their children is something that's touched a lot of people's lives and it's powerful to see it explored in such a raw way. Yet, the game never goes too far despite how bleak the whole plotline is.

Probably just made an educated guess about the fact he's in the nightmare world with her, implying he's guilty of doing something too. She guesses wrong in the conversation after all, assuming James had a secret lover and he left Mary to die alone. Eddie is pictured as a "dumb" character and he figures it out so its not a stretch Angela does as well. Only one still in deep denial is James himself.

For anyone wondering why some of the bosses are easy in SH2, he is playing on Normal; the bosses change drastically on Hard, even Eddie. Hard mode is still generally a 'cakewalk' for the majority of the game in comparison to the other three (1, 3, 4) SH games, but the special scripted events such as the hospital hallways and some of the bosses are a lot different than what Normal gives you.

My feelings on Eddie are more mixed than I anticipated. On the one hand, Mr. Dombrowski was wrong to kill people based on the slightest of provocations (imagined *or* real) and he absolutely should have been locked away. On the other hand, the man only reached that point after many years of mental deterioration caused by regular torment...and I'd wager a fair amount of that suffering was brought on by thoughtless comments/actions in addition to conscious bullying; in the end, we created our own monster. Still, I feel as though some of Eddie's lines are unexpectedly funny and I can't tell if those deliveries in particular were deliberate (perhaps as a ways of deflating some of the attendant tension?) or if the voice actor unintentionally went a bit _too_ far and the overemphasis wasn't picked up at the time of recording.

i remember seeing a comment on 1 of the previous videos abt how, bc of what the enemies represent, James goes the entire game basically just killing women. The one time we see him react to it in the first enemy encounter (with the Lying Figure in the alley) is the cutscene after you kill them: James is purely disgusted. Because what he sees is a monster. the one time he feels genuinely remorseful for stamping out life? when he kill Eddie - a man. he even remarks, crestfallen, "a *human being*" bc all he's seen thus far are monsters. but why is that all he's seen? well, bc thats how he sees women. a big part of the reasoning that led to the decision he made that landed him here has to do not just w his relationship to a certain woman, but his view of all women (this is reflected explicitly w the design of the nurses & Maria's presence). that particular line is ESPECIALLY chilling when you think about it in the context of the Maria ending. its really funny ppl do all these articles n essays about how to have more "progressive" games that critique regressive ideologies; we now have a bunch of games take whatever the is subject as a mallet to the player & lose them completely in the process. yet 2 decades ago we have what is by far the most subtle yet most damning take down of misogyny i've ever seen in a game, it still hasn't been topped. they just don't make em like this no more man.
@slifer8752 жыл бұрын
cute comment but it falls apart the momment you realise james gave no fucks about killing the daddy monster, who he saw as a monster despite being male.
@27TheMunchkin2 жыл бұрын
@@slifer875 The daddy monster is technically male AND female - the model is of a man "embracing" a woman. The model in in the hotel is different but still hold true to the theme, since its a man smothering a woman death.

- It's been my long standing head-theory that Laura's not a little girl at all. (James's emphasis, not mine, on "little girl") It makes sense to me while fitting with the thematics of the game; it's also just as possible there's other people around, too, who aren't trapped in the personal Misery that SH solidifies and leads you to confront; Laura is half-in and half-out of her own depressing experiences and reflections due to her illness and her connections with Mary and James, but she's not lived enough/is old enough to have any real "Demons" or personal issues.

It's always so infuriating watching SH2 LP's where the people always assume it's the order of the crimes, not which one was innocent. It's right there if you actually pay attention to the text that you read. The arsonist wasn't found, the sheriff just took in a stranger, just because he didn't know him.
