There were no trees on my Philly street, until...

Our serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis) has done very well in its first year! It survived a hot summer, a few Philly snow storms, and is now putting on some good growth in its second spring! It flowered and is producing some fruit, which we hope to share with neighbors.

@@Andrew_the_Arborist Need some higher shrubs around it, interlocking roots, but non-aggressive. Evergreen huckleberry? Blueberry? Hydrangea? Or just SHADE the soil (and trunk where possible). Amelanchier is an UNDERstory tree, in it’s natural wooded habitat. Out here in Seattle these trees are battling a crazy rust-looking/devastating disease. They are native to Appalachia/Allegheny…

Our town of Egg Harbor City has ginko trees in our business district. I can't help remembering my third grade teacher back in the fifties showed us the ginko in the nearby park and explained that it was from a time of the earliest trees on earth.

Is there enough room left for a person in a wheelchair to be able to pass? It seems kind of narrow. Other than that (and consulting with visually impaired and otherwise disabled people), it's awesome. Streets with trees are much cooler in the summer and prettier all year round.

Amelanchiers is such a banger genus. I find these things growing huge on all kinds of soil conditions that almost nothing else survives on. Well, except the fucking buckthorn(cathartica) but I'm not trying to get heated right now so we won't talk about that.

I think they’re generally shorter lived flowers on serviceberries. I notice they don’t stick around for too long!

A little serviceberry? Lol, I don’t think so. In my years as an urban forester, I’ve yet to see a serviceberry even lift up a sidewalk tile, let alone a house foundation. A big oak can barely do that.

Genuine question: why is dogs pee bad for plants? I thought it adds nitrogen to the soil

My understanding is that dog pee is pretty salty, so it changes the salinity of the soil, which can alter how water flows into the roots. I think the nitrogenous compounds can also alter soil pH and cause other issues. If it's once in a while, it probably doesn't have much of an effect, but repeatedly it certainly does!

Here in the eastern US, violets are terrific native plants and support a lot of insects!
