I agree with Chapman, there is a possible tipping point approaching in the weeks or months ahead when a meltdown becomes a cascading breakdown in military and civilian infrastructure and logistics. The lack of resistance against Ukrainian forces in Kursk may be precursor of upcoming events. With the removal of vehicle bridges, it is only matter of time before transmission towers, gas pipelines, and rail bridges/links are destroyed and Belgorod drifts out of Moscow's orbit. For residents of these regions (Kursk and Belgorod) the current artificial border between these oblasts and Ukraine will be open as it was in soviet days. Putin's assumption of national pride for the Russian motherland is dead.

This tracks with what Konstantin from Inside Russia has said before. He's a power plant engineer by trade, and he's predicted the collapse of the Russian power grid due to sanctions and drone strikes for quite a while now. This might be the first major domino.

@gregash7683 21 күн бұрын
@@zibbitybibbitybop Smart guy, Konstantin. I've subscribed and supported him for years. His has insights that others completely miss, because his knows the culture, keeps contact with insiders, and thinks outside of the box. Much of Russia's resources are not new. The rely on soviet left-overs and bandage their problems instead of making proper repairs and replacements. The power grid is a prime example. Before nations states emerged from the old Soviet Union, their power grid crossed new boundaries and non-essential maintenance was ignored. Currently, the Baltics are cutting their ties to the soviet grid and reconnecting to the European power grid. It is an issue of voltage reliability and hertz stability.

Similar to Stalin when he purged his commanders and generals. Russia has always been more concerned about blind obedience from it's military than competence. In that respect, Russia has succeeded in building a military that is totally incompetent. Centuries ago there was Vlad the Impaler in Wallachia, and now Russia has Vlad the Failure.

They seem to be loyal to putin, though, in spite of all their other faults. Putin's assassins are usually sent after people who are deemed disloyal to the tsar, not the incompetents. Kremlin political intrigues are comparable to a bulldog fight under a rug. An outsider only hears the growling, and when he sees the bones fly out from beneath it is obvious who won. ~ Winston Churchill We've already seen Putin playing musical chairs with his council somewhat. I'm not sure putting the FSB in charge of the combat troops in Kursk makes sense, but then, why should it? You'd expect Putin to pull more resources from Donbas to fight in Kursk, but so far it doesn't appear he's doing so. Perhaps he's caught in the "sunk cost fallacy," and expects his investment in the east is too important to give up on, relative to protecting Russian territory in the Kursk oblast. Another consideration is that the quality of Russian logistic capabilities is very low. Moving troops, trucks, big guns, etc., from Donbas to Kursk is a daunting task. It's hundreds of kilometers over less than optimum roads.

The “sunk cost fallacy” explanation is certainly plausible-it is a common error people make. But I wonder whether it explains this particular puzzle. Could it be that the Kremlin believes the incursion into Kursk serves its purposes somehow, perhaps with recruitment? Could it be that shifting forces to defend Kursk is now beyond Russian capacity, i.e., your second consideration?

Time for training, making mistakes, letting the enemy make mistakes by overstretching themselves, gathering overwhelming numbers, etc. we think in terms of months, at most. What if Putin doesn't care about losing a sliver of territory and doubles down on the Donbass while Ukraine's best units are in Kursk? We keep expecting Putin to care for his people like a democratically elected westerner.

@jonathanvilario5402 21 күн бұрын
The thing is Putin is already pushing into Donbass at max capacity, they can't double it because there are no troops left to double. It's a lose-lose situation, he either continues doing the same thing, or withdraws to try and retake Kursk.

If he doesn’t stop Ukraine‘s advances, it will not stay a sliver and even endanger his Kharkiv offensive. So he has to react strong enough to stop Ukraine from just advancing at a currently way faster pace than any of the Russian offensives do. As Putin doesn’t have a second army in his bunker, he will have to decide where he does allocate scarce resources. So bottom line: If Putin decides to ignore Ukraine’s offensive, he will simply lose all of Russia. Doubling down on the Donbass is impossible as he doesn’t have a second army hidden away somewhere.

Kharkiv wasn't a Russian loss. It was a sensible withdrawal. The winter was approaching, there is one bridge and they were surrounded. They would have been cut off during winter, especially if the bridge was compromised. Ukraine didn't force any retreat or withdrawal. It was a sensible decision. Media narrative and biases over and over.

How does changing the personnel get at the root of the problem? Everyone is corrupt. Any change is same for same. Additionally, the caution against changing horses in mid stream is clearly not a Russian proverb and if it does exist, it’s neglected common sense.

Stalin did a purge then paid for it during WWII or The Great Patriotic War. Second, a coach can only with with good players. A good coach can take mediocre players and make them better but…is the Russian military capable of supplying even mediocre solders?

Anyone in the Russian officer corps who might have been even somewhat effective at the tactical level was purged long ago. In that, Vladimir Putin is like Donald Trump, both feel the need to surround themselves with loyal fools. It's interesting that both characters are taking their inevitable downward plunge at about the same time. Who hits the ground first?
