Gordie Howe, is one of the greatest players in hockey history, a man who cheated father time to play in the NHL in five decades, a man who won 4 stanley cup championships, had 23 NHL all-star appearances, won 6 hart trophies and 6 art Ross trophies, as the NHL’s most valuable player and top point-scorer. A man who had 22 consecutive NHL seasons of scoring on at least 23 goals… And whats crazy is that this list of achievements barely scratches the surface on how Mr. Hockey has left an impact on the game we see today.
Born March 31, 1928 in Floral, Saskatchewan as one of nine children, Gordie Howe’s pro hockey career got off on a bad foot. Not for Howe necessarily, but for the New York Rangers and Lester Patrick, who famously told a 14-year-old Howe at their tryout camp in Winnipeg that he “might as well go home” because he’d “never be a hockey player.”

Gordy was one of the nicest man I ever had the honor of meeting. As a fan he stood right next to me when he took his off ice breakers, he never sat down. Alex stood right in front of him and they shared comments and strategies with each other. I also met and enjoined a lunch with Ted, he also was a great person to and an honor to have met. I was able to be at every home game at Olympia for years. Great, Great, Memories. .

the Gordie Howe hat-trick- Goal, assist and a fight. -love the story that after seeing Gordie playing ambidextrous, and fighting, the owner of the Red Wings, who invested in sports venues and promoted boxing, offered him the opportunity to box, telling him he could be a world champion. Gordie said he had to ask his wife, and Colleen said no.

A big reason that Gordie can never be duplicated is that physically, he was something of a freak. He had very short legs. Marty Howe tells a story about answering the phone one day, and it was a tailor from a store who wanted his Dad's measurements. Marty went and measured some of his Dad's pants as instructed by the tailor. The tailor couldn't believe it, and said he'd call back when Marty's Mom was home. He did. Mrs Howe dutifully measured the inseam of her husband's pants just as her son had done, and found it less than 28 inches even though Gordie was six feet tall. Just like her son had reported. That's the average inseam of a man four inches shorter than Gordie. Rest in Peace Mr. Hockey. Thanks for everything.

40 goals @ 40 years old, get outta town. This man's legend gets bigger with every passing day. Mr.Hockey is probably the most appropriate nick name in the history of history. Right up there with Elbows. Larger then Life, like how Babe Ruth, Wilt Chamberlain & Muhammad Ali are remembered. Hero's come & go but Legends live forever. As great as he was on the ice, Howe was even greater to all his fans when they met him in person. It was never about Gordie, it was always about the ones who cheered him on. Class, Grit & Grace what more could you ask for outta a Man? Or a Hockey Player?

I'm a life long fan of Gordie Howe and I'd like to add some commentary. Most teams have an enforcer. Detroit didn't need one. They had Gordie. In era, Gordie was one of the physically biggest men in the league. There is a picture that pops up occasionally online showing Gordie after a game sitting fatigued in his shorts. He is as built as any body builder I have ever seen. The muscle just exude from his body. Gordie was ambidextrous, so you never knew when he was going to pull the trigger on his shot or pass. In the twilight of his career, I watched some young player drive Gordie into the boards. Gordie got up and continued to play. But the next shift when they were both on the ice, Gordie skated up behind him, stuck his stick between his legs, and dumped the young player into his own bench. One handed. Lastly, I attended a celebrity bowling tournament of Detroit sports stars in the early 1980's. Gordie was bowling at a 180+ clip for his games. His opponents were ragging him so he changed to bowling left handed and scored in the middle 200's. The man was just an athlete, maybe as good as there ever was in any sport.

That’s a Crazy Record and Thing to think about it? because you’ll never see another elite player, play ambidextrous in todays game. Howe was the G.O.A.T. of hockey. Had he played as a 20-year-old when Gretzky started his career he would have outscored Gretzky. Ovechkin and Crosby would have been ordinary in comparison. It was a shame that the Wings and the NHL did not find a way for Gordie, Mark, and Marty to play in Detroit. They should not have had to play in Houston. Marty was a really good football player. If he had decided football was his sport he would have been a member of the Hall of Fame. I watched him play on the defensive line. He brutalized the offensive guard across from him. By the end of the first quarter, the guard stopped blocking him.
