After watching so many other famous anime and nothing left to watch except from One Piece, so I decided to start watching it. It was so frustrating at the start because my expectation was the same with other anime. I expected to see fight after fight after fight without thinking too much about the story like other anime did. But I slowly fall in love with One Piece because it is funny, ambitious, sad, and also massive world building, exciting adventure, beautiful friendship, interesting powers, and many plot twists, historical theme, mysterious things and so many other great things. I used to love the bloody action anime/movies with non-stop fights but One Piece is the exceptional and number one favourite anime for me now and ever.

As a filmschool graduate and amateur comic artist I often think about how great making "A new One Piece would be", but I constantly think about a lot of these points. I think the only way to make it work would be basically "fool people" into it as a work around. In a similar fashion to how series like Dungeon Meshi masks themselves as silly comedies and then start dropping a bigger storyline around it. And even then, no one has really come close to doing it in the scale One Piece does; Replicating those conditions for it to happen without workarounds it's something that will likely not happen in a long time. Great video Morj.

Could this be done by introducing a vague original goal for the main characters and once the reality of the world starts to appear, clarifying their dream to be completely and utterly absurd in scale? One Piece is a type of slow pace manga that didn't make every chapter has hype scene during their early journey. But most author these day had to rush writing their story because modern reader these day don't like reading slow pace shonen manga. Even My Hero Academia author is struggled to continue maintain the quality of his story while receiving complain from the reader. Only Oda has freedom to do that because One Piece were start written during around 25-30 years ago, where internet didn't even a thing yet.

When i studied literature and we had the topic of legends and epics i thought about one piece. The classical works a products of their time. But what i value the most about one piece is that we start the journey when luffy was a nobody who had just a dream. No narrator explained to us what great deads the protagonist did to accuire his reputation as a legendary warrior. No, we the reader witnessed from the begining how it all started, how a guy in a barrel was brave enough to declare war to the whole gouverment, when he was a nobody. How he fought the great marine ford war that would change the coming century. How he liberated the countries. And it is all believeable, because we were there. At the highest and the lowest points of the protagonist. And the world does not simply exist to serve the protagonist but lives and breathes without him. If you an og fan, when you really followed the story of luffy and his crew from the begining, without getting spoiled, the format of weekly releasing (eventhough it comes at a cost of health) means we are on this unknown, everevolving journey together with them. Back in the day the epics and legends were not simply made by one person, the authors as we know them today just simply wrote down what was before told orally and passed on by people from generation to generation with new additions to the story and i think that the weekly release mirrors somehow this tradition in that the story is not finished but gets with every week a new layer of narration, our theories feed even more into it week for week. It is hard to find out what will be our "modern" literature canon. One piece definitly deserves a place there. My wish is it that instituations finally recognize manga and anime as an form of art that has its value. I cannot believe how often i heard my professors complain how there is an lack of stories in a specific department yet they ignore any recomantations of modern media.

The author, SIU, apparently even had 20 books worth of material written before starting the series. Naturally, there's an insane amount of planning, world building, and character building. One piece lasted this long because oda was firstmost primarily focused on pure adventure. Specifically luffy’s adventure. That’l structure is easily found in children’s Saturday morning cartoons (i know they don’t do that anymore). Where the story/plot isn’t meant to be taken seriously but to enjoy the ride. While oda does this he can easily build the world. Because remember that one piece was supposed to just be the yonko and that’s it. Then he added schibukai to lengthen it and im sure he added more to lengthen the adventure. So technically his manga would’ve been as short as the other shonen mangas out there.
@Desmond_Video_Discussions5 ай бұрын
"im sure he added more to lengthen the adventure" another example was the supernova. he made them all up completely on the spot as a suggestion from his editor. the week they appeared in a chapter is the same week he came up with the ideas for them. that means Bonnie, Law, Kidd, Biege, Killer, Hawkins, etc, all of them and all the important arcs they follow and influence, were also spontaneous additions

i mean its really really crazy how this story has been going for more than a quarter-century and STILL every new arc people say "this is peak". which is fair - ever since reading/watching it in the mid/late 2000s, water 7 has always been my nr 1 favourite arc. always. but now, finally, almost 20 years later, egghead finally toppled w7 as my favourite arc.

I’d say in terms of scale, the only other manga that’s close to One Piece is HxH. The Dark Continent was really leading up to be an epic saga.
@thedoctor35285 ай бұрын
Potential and realizing that potential are two different things. This is like if we considered One Pieces scale to be huge just by hearing if the grand line and never exploring it

All that we now need is an actual storyline that takes place on the Dark Continent and fleshes it out a lot. Going by the current pace that should only take 50 years.

'Epic' doesn't just mean big, and it isn't comedy compatible (explicitly defined as dignified). Having 1000 chapters of accumulation doesn't make the worldbuilding uniquely deep. FMA is more densely packed with interconnected layers. Pacing is kind of an arbitrary frame of reference when 1 day is 200 chapters.

I would love for Morj to do a version of this video that's strictly for people who have never watched One Piece (for us who want to introduce more people to the series!). I feel like this is the perfect time to get on board with so much happening for the series and with us still not knowing what the One Piece is. Once that Pandora's Box is opened I feel like almost nobody will be able to watch again without it being spoiled so a video like this with no spoilers that captures the same energy would be awesome!

Im currently at chapter 230 of One Piece and I love it. The setting is phenomenal, devil fruit abilities are really unique, and that level of consistency and worldbuilding is insane. Every new crewmate is my favorite above the last. Reading something like Jjk is nauseating bc the pace is way too fast. Reading One Piece is something I can digest and can’t wait to catch up on.

You can easily use TV tropes to break down One Piece as a: Ocean Punk, Adventure-friendly, action, gunpowder fantasy with a "wooden ships and iron men" backdrop, with enough "anachronism stew" and bathos surreal humor. Knowing all that, saying there will never be another epic like One Piece is both correct and false, there won't be a story EXACTLY, like One Piece, because every "world-builder" and creator have their own flare and tastes, that not everybody will blatanly rip-off each other (unless Tolkein), but there are enough creative storytellers out there that the future of storytelling is not as predictable as most say it is

I feel like Toriko was the 1st manga to try to replicate One Piece's style. There's some obvious influence there: One Piece = GOD ingredient, New World = Gourmet World, Roger = Acacia, Golden Age of Piracy = Gourmet Age. Also, Oda adding more and more characters isn't always a good thing. It sometimes leads to overstuffed arcs where there's a lack of focus and a lot of meandaring.
@j3nki5415 ай бұрын
Imo only true in Wano where he rushed to the ending and some plot lines weren't fully realized. Otherwise he manages his massive cast quite well. Reading week to week it can feel pretty awful, since it becomes so difficult to remember them all and stuff, but on reread stuff usually functions really well. The smaller cast that we're having on Egghead rn feels a lot better week to week tho.
@rezoannur23335 ай бұрын
@@j3nki541 It's still a problem in arcs like Punk Hazard, Dressrosa and even WCI. What did the Yeti Cool Brothers add? Oda introducing numerous children of Big Mom in the end when most are inconsequential and will never get proper development.

one manga i felt had the potential to go far was “hunters guild: red hood”, but of course, a couple chapters in they axed it and forced the ending to come far too prematurely with nearly no setup. it really was a shame because while i read it i felt “this adventure could last forever”

I read that one weekly at the time. I definitely got the opposite impression. After that first explosive chapter, it just didn't have the juice to sustain a longform narrative. Hence it's cancellation

How did joyboy lost the war and how will luffy's going to win.... Here's a theory what makes the difference between luffy and joyboy?.... their powers are probably the same and the only difference that we could speculate their crew or allies. When the void century war happened there could be a stage when joyboy's allies must take a decision and may be they make a decision against joyboy (probably they tricked by imu or someone from 20 kingdoms) and that leads to joyboy's loss.they probably lacks of loyalty or belief towards joyboy or ancient kingdom.And after joyboy's loss they realised that they had been tricked and wronged joyboy.Maybe because of that zunisha and the giant robot apologising to joyboy. And like mihawk said the greatest strength of luffy is make people around him his allies.We all know the loyalty of luffy's crew.They all believe in him.like the void century war the decision making stage would repeat in the luffy vs world government war and luffy's allies will believe luffy unlike joyboy and make decision in favour of luffy.And that will lead to their victory.

If One Piece ends up good, I believe the only way a story like this will be ever published is if Oda himself endorses it. Like the autor reched Oda and explained his ideas and then Oda himself convinces the Magazines to have patietence.
