As a Yankees fan I felt so disappointed in Don Zimmer, atleast he apologized LIVE the next day to everybody so good on him. But I never blamed Pedro, just throwing him to the ground and just exiting himself out of that fight before it escalated to fist fighting was the only option he really had there.

Anybody who watched Pedro at his peak, and leading up to his peak KNEW he was different. I started following him in '97, watched him beat Maddux for the Cy in '97, and jumped for joy when he was traded to the Red Sox for the '98 season. He was the reason the Red Sox experienced a spike in popularity and it is a shame they couldn't win a couple more WS during his reign as the top pitcher in baseball. There was nothing like a Pedro day at Fenway.

Personally I always find it wild whenever people talk about "short athletes" because almost always the players are above average in terms of height overall, just short when compared to other athletes. The only "short athlete" in baseball that I can think of who I'd call actually short is Jose Altuve

I was born in 83 so this time period was my wheelhouse for baseball. The best pitching Ive seen in my years watching was the 99 and 00 seasons from Pedro. He was borderline actually unhittable. He had such mound presence too. I wish Yordan Ventura (rip) was still around, he was the closest to Pedro. Obviously not as good of stuff, but similar size and attitude.

To put a visual on how popular he was, Pedro Martinez made his Phillies debut on August 12th 2009. At the time, if you went to Citizens Bank Park you'd notice the most popular "shir-sey's at the time belonged to Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Jimmy Rollins. And outside of maybe Carlos Ruiz, it wasn't even close. I was at his Phillies home debut and there were a few Martinez jerseys here and there. Later in the month, I went to his second Phillies home start and by that point, Pedro Martinez "shir-seys" had taken the top spot over the aforementioned 3......AND IT WASN'T EVEN CLOSE!!! I'm absolutely grateful that I had the opportunity to watch him pitch in person. Even in his final season, Pedro was an absolute thrill and wonder to watch.

I was lucky enough to see him pitch for the Red Sox from 1998 to 2004. He was, without a doubt, one of the best pitchers ever. Tommy Lasorda was an idiot for trading him. But I'm sure glad he did. Then the Sox got him for Carl Pavano and Tony Armas Jr.? That was a steal.

Pedro, Randy Johnson, Clemons, Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Schiling. Competitors just find a way to rise to the top. At his peek, none were better than Pedro.

I don't see how Greg Maddux isn't on the Pitcher Mount Rushmore. You pretty much just created the "Mount Rushmore of Power Pitchers". I'd 100% drop Ryan, he only has a single insane season (And even that was "only" 195 ERA+) and ultimately while Koufax walked so Ryan could run so Johnson could fly, they are all extremely similar pitchers and Ryan was the least ridiculous of them. Which is of course not to insult him, you have to say shit like that if talking about some hypothetical "Top 4 of all time". He was big, but not Mount Rushmore big. Even if we are just talking about influential and not greatness, again, they are all the same comp. Maddux had the longevity you want PLUS he had his '94-'95, which were comparable to Martinez's '99-'00. ...eh, then again, trying to reduce to 4 feels just too overwhelming. Like, do you include Walter Johnson? He was obviously deadball and yet he STILL had an insane 4 seasons of over 200 ERA+, and he also had the longevity. Do you include Cy Young? The game was utterly different back then and yet he was so influential his name is on the award. It's kind of an exercise in futility and just designed for arguments lol

i don't know that the 90s really were "dominated by hitters" across the board. there were some VERY good pitchers through the 90s and early 2000s. some of the best pitchers in history played during this era. if you list the best 20 pitchers of all time, there are AT least 3 guys from the 90s who make that list. 130+ years of baseball and arguably 3 (or 5!) of the best pitchers EVER played in an era where hitters "dominated."

One interesting story from Pedro's book accuses Jeff Wilpon (son of Mets owner, Fred Wilpon) of forcing Pedro to pitch through an injury at the end of the 05 season (An injury the team wanted to shut him down for the year for) so the team could capitalize on ticket sales for a Pedro VS Dontrelle Willis pitching match up. Just further proof that the Wilpons are probably the most inept big market owners in sports history.

Unsolicited conspiracy theory: The 2000 New York Yankees purposely tanked down the stretch (13-18 in Sept/Oct) in order to keep the Red Sox out of the playoffs, since they knew if they faced them they’d have to face Pedro twice, which effectively meant 2 automatic losses for them.
