The beauty of Subaru is that he's not just some self-insert MC who is given a ton of generic 'cool' traits, has very few character flaws and quirks, and has no personality beyond being generically 'nice'. Subaru is a flawed character, and more importantly, his flaws aren't used as gags, but have legitimate impact on the story in different ways. On one hand, he's willing to literally die for the people he cares about, and goes through immense suffering simply to help others. He's extremely tenacious, and won't give up just because things are hard. He's funny and witty, in a way that makes him a lot of friends and allies, even out of people who are supposed to be his rivals. On the other hand, he's stubborn to a fault, and that combined with his pride causes him to butt heads with others (especially in earlier arcs), and he absolutely loathes himself. He also has a bunch of quirks, such as being a fiend for mayonnaise, narrating his own thoughts, calling other people strange nicknames that nobody else understands, cuts himself, and has a hobby of occasionally cross-dressing. His good, bad, and strange traits aren't contradictory, they're all manifestations of who he is as a person. He's stubborn because he cares, he's willing to die for others because he hates himself, he keeps dying for others because he's stubborn, he makes friends easily because he's an interesting person who cares about others, but part of what makes him interesting is that he has so many strange personality quirks which readers may not like about him. He's an actual person; a 'real' character- not some cardboard cutout of a person that's got all the good things that surveys and marketing says that readers like. And that's a very rare thing (especially these days), which is what makes Subaru so great.

This is what make subaru’s story so good to me, despite all the suffering, at it’s core, it’s really hopeful. It’s not a story about despair. Rather, it’s a story about how a man whose only ability is not giving up, finds hope even after being cornered from all sides. A redemption story done right. No matter how many times the story beats subaru down, there will always be that light at the end of the tunnel.

Ngl, after watching so many ReZero videos, this felt like only recap with little else and didn't do it for me lol 😅 sorry for being harsh, I just feel tiny bit clickbaited 🙃 I didn't get the feeling you understood/explained any aspect of ReZero particulary profoundly, though granted with so little time to cover 52+ dense episodes, it could have been just the problem of the format. You at least understand the story better than 99% of the react channels 😄 so respect for that, please continue with your ReZero coverage that's always appreciated, anyway I really recommend NearlyOnRed's 3 hour video, Reactionists WHDAAA fanfic or Vyazov23's Watching Arc 4 in The Theater of Despair fanfic for anyone who wants to delve deeper into the story, they really understand the story on next level and made me realize things I didn't notice before about Subaru and various other aspects of the story, fascinating content. (Skip ahead to WHDAAA fic part with the Subaru/Emilia argument to see what I mean more quickly, never before have I seen that scene explained in a better way)

True immortality is 100% a curse and it's not even a question. It doesn't stop pain or injury, it simply prevents you from dying. (Subaru by extension does not have immortality, but time reversal and rebirth. He still dies, he just starts again.) True immortals will end up alone, frozen for eternity by the heat death of the universe. They may lose limbs, or even their entire bodies, imagine falling into a shredder but whatever largest part of you remains intact is capable of thinking and feeling everything, the loss of all your senses, of your body, and yet you persist in thought alone, trapped within whatever space is called Consciousness. And even if you are one of the lucky ones to also have invulnerability, what about your loved ones? You still end up alone. And you can not ever change that inevitability, no matter how much you try. Being alone, with nothing to ever again do or feel or taste or see. That is the fate of every true immortal.
@HappilyMundane2 күн бұрын
I chose rebirth instead of reincarnation because reincarnation typically does not include the transfer of one's memories, and simply their soul (look at Buddhist beliefs for that, some even suggest we are all the same person reincarnated over and over again until we finally attain enlightenment, but I am yet to have the memories of any of your lives save for Jim Bob the Caveman)
@HappilyMundane2 күн бұрын
"Revival" is probably more apt though in the case of Subaru.
