The character development in this anime is unmatched and we learn so much about the world through the characters too, which I don't really see in other shows.

Frieren is a Shōnen actually, but it’s definitely a Shōnen of different flavor. This mage exam reminds me of both the Hunter and Chūnin exams, but I think this one won’t be as harrowing as the other two 😅😅.

It is not a show about a young boy, nor is the target audience young boys, nor is the story focused around fighting, brotherhood, or getting stronger to achieve your dreams. This is not an action oriented story, even if action is a part of it. Those are all qualifying traits of the Shonen genre, and this has none of them.
