Alf's T-33 stories brought back memories for me. I was a tech in the CAF & had a tour in Baden Germany with most of my time working on the whisper jet. His ride as an Air Cadet in the back seat & encountering an F4 mirrors my own experience on a flight home after repairing a T-33 with a faulty starter panel. We had flown to the German base Memmingen where the aircraft had gone unserviceable with another crew. They flew our aircraft back as I was working on the broken bird. Unable to complete the repair that day we stayed overnight & departed for Baden the next day. On start up the radio inverter decided to crap out & with no parts to repair it, the pilot was able to get permission to fly home low level on emergency UHF radio which ran off the DC electrical system. I had had a few beers too many the night before so wasn't feeling all that great, the pilot was tip top. As we were tooling along at a few hundred feet AGL I caught something going under us out of the corner of my eye. Next thing we know a German F4 pulled up in front of us, having bounced us from behind & flown beneath our aircraft. The pilot Tom came over the intercom calmly saying 'that's what happens when you don't watch your 6'. I nearly crapped myself when I saw that huge beast fill the sky in front of us. After a minute or so with the F4 slightly ahead to our port, Tom decided entertain the invitation & give chase. T-33 vs F4, hehe. The outcome might surprise folks. The T-33 is quite maneuverable at that altitude & try as he might the F4 couldn't shake us off his tail. I was on the 100% button on the oxygen regulator trying not to lose my cookies as Tom threw the old bird around keeping the F4 in his sights. At one point he again hit the intercom to say "brrrrrt", meaning he had a kill. Finally tiring of the game the F4 lit his burners & left us in the dust. Might be worth mentioning at this point that our Canadair built T-birds had a more powerful Rolls Royce Nene 10 engine installed compared to the US Lockheed built aircraft with their Allison jets.

Wow, excellent guest this week. ALF is from my active era, myself 1972-1993 in the USAF. Spent a couple of weeks at Cold Lake with the F-111D's in 1992, but that was after his posting. It was also refreshing on the discussion of avionics (my primary) and familiar systems, all pre GPS. i.e. INS, IFF (Mode IV), ILS and TACAN. Thanks for bringing back memories guys!!!

Fabulous video, loved hearing Dan’s stories and anecdotes especially as Mover pointed out Dan flew in the golden age of Cold War western air power. I whole heartedly support Gonky’s efforts to write his memoirs. Gonky is such a humble low key guy he underestimates and undersells his personal accomplishments and experiences. I would especially love to read about his professional and personal experience living and working in Malaysia as a contract IP.

Cadets in Canada is essentially military scouting. There's Air, Army and Sea Cadets. A friend of mine is an instructor pilot for the cadets as her RCAF Reserves duty. The ones who actually get pilot training start out in some rather pristine vintage gliders. They can eventually once old enough earn a private pilot ticket on a single-engine prop. Which then pays off dividends if they actually join the RCAF. The Canadair built CF-5A and CF-5D had a number of improvements that were later adopted by Northrop proper for production of their version. The nose-gear had a two-position extension. Compressed its just the standard length but extended before take-off it increases the angle of attack and reduced the take-off roll by about 20%. The J85-15s had 4,300 pounds thrust each with afterburner which was some 450 pounds more than the GE J85-5As used on the T-38 and F-5A/B Freedom Fighters. There was also an improved navigation system, and they built 50 swappable noses for the single seat CF-5 which turned them into CF-5(R), replacing the twin 20mm cannons with a quartet of 70mm cameras. Besides the 89 As and 46 Ds built for Canada there was a batch of 75 NF-5As and 30 NF-5Bs built for the Netherlands which were essentially identical spec to the CF ones. Canada was the first export customer for the Hornet and we bought a significant number of 2-seaters in the 138 aircraft order, and with all the updates and live extensions they're now avionics and sensors wise roughly the same as some of the Super Hornets. Ours never updated the engines though so they're still the F404-GE-400s so less thrust than the F404-GE-402s of the actual C/D construction batch. The spotlight was introduced by Canada actually, as was the false canopy painted under fuselage. The wikipedia for the CF-18 lists all the incremental changes and life extensions to the internals. The latest update changes the radar from the APG-73 to the -79 on 36 of the aircraft with the most remaining lifespan which will hopefully tie over the fleet until the initial batch of 16 CF-35A deliveries begin sometime in 2026 (4 aircraft and then 6 more each in 2027 and 2028). The CF-35s will have the drag-chute pod as well as the 'sidekick' rack system to allow 6 AMRAAMs internally instead of only 4 of normal F-35s but they're not adopting the refueling probe of the B/C variant as instead our new A330 MRTT variant will be delivered with a flying boom on the centerline and hose and drogue on the wing pylons.

A lot of perspective with the guest tonight. It would be late for a European guest, but would enjoy their insight. I know you two are fighter guys, but consider trying to bring on some cargo and tanker pilots. Maybe even some old school crew chief who has some chops about them who could tell us about the MX side of things. Congrats on year 2…I think the next step is engaging folks in the future by learning more about all the layers of MIL aviation that make it happen.

Great show with Alf. Here in Australia we have the Air Cadets. Back when I was in them they were called the "Air Training Corps" and run by the RAAF and staffed usually by retired air force guys, one of whom was a Spitfire pilot during WW2 (I'm still friends with his sons today). Our flight as our bit of the ATC was called, was near RAAF Base East Sale in Victoria. So, we had a few opportunities to visit the base and if we were lucky to go up for flights, usually in transport aircraft, one of which was the DC-3. The flight was, and is today, attached to the local aero club, so we had opportunities to go up for joy flights if we were rostered on to help wash aircraft, refuel them and generally help around the club. That side of things was good. Got to do some aerobatics in a Victa Air Tourer (its military equivalent was a CT/4 trainer). Don't know how I didn't throw up. Pilot said that was a good sign, pity about my eyesight, he said. Oh well, that's life, I guess. Of all the kids that I hung out with then, only 2 went on to be pilots, both in GA. Cadets, like any kid leaving school, had to compete to gain entry into the RAAF. I was knocked back due to crap eyesight, couldn't even get in as an enlisted type. And I have another book to read (still waiting on CW's continuing his series of books).

@j0esmith2 ай бұрын
It was the A-16 then the AF-16 and it was trialled with the modified GAU-8, but was found to have a problem with the gun knocking itself off centreline with sustained fire. It was brought up in the early 90s as a possible replacement for the a-10 and we can see how that turned out haha

Gonky's perspective is dead on. This life is temporary, and bigger things are on the other side with Christ. And Mover's take was dead on for the short term. A bad moment doesn't have to turn into a bad life if we step back and see the whole picture. Life is full of new possibilities and new beginnings.
