Explanation : A year is actually 365 days and 6 hours. Every 4 years they add an extra day to make up for it.

Earth makes a full orbit around the sun every 365 AND 6 hours. After 4 years there's a full extra day because we don't count these 6 hours in normal years. But in leap years, we add that extra day to February.

If you wanna get even deeper into this rabbit hole: A leap day only happens every 4 years, except for every century, with the exception of every 400 years! This means the year 2000 was an extra special leap year where normally we would remove that leap day! He won't get another leap year like that until 2400.
