Nowadays women are doing it for themselves, so the thought of staying in an unhealthy marriage is no longer appealing. We’re also weighing in on a boo who doesn’t know how to budget, plus why keeping your pregnancy a secret from your bosses may work in your favor now that we’re all working from home!

I'm glad Lonnie brought it up. Back then women's only security was being married. It wasn't always about love it was about security. Plus it was more pleasure for the man, how the women felt did not matter it was all about making him feel good. Women who were single were shamed for it aswell. Just sad sad. Now women can choose what they want to deal with and not. I dont really think marriages will ever be as high as they use to be going forward cause now it's about being in a marriage that's based on truth, faithfulness, and actual love for eachother.

Yes! Premarital counseling and marriage counseling are NOT a bad thing at all, I do think they are stigmatized as if people shouldn’t need a third party to help. Seeing a different perspective can be so helpful. Years of marriage counseling still cannot “fix” each other’s issues if both sides are not willing to work through it together though.

Don't listen to these folks making good life choices isn't being lucky it's called being smart. People these days just wanna blame and complain. The only focus on failures, the negatives & people who are feeling the consequences for their bad choices & not listening to found advice. They just wanna complain and expect for happiness to fall into their lap with no effort. Notice ho neither of these guys nor anyone else has ask for your advice on how you and your husband are happy? yup that's how they are they want things, people and money that they don't wanna work for. Lazy good for nothing generation. Even if they get it they wont be able to maintain it, they want some random person to show up in their life and do all the work as if they don't have a life of their own, lazy.

Now ladies .... I love you all. And ... having both sets of grandparents who were married for 70 years each, real love does exist. My grandfather was completely heartbroken when the love of his life died after 70 years. He just gave up. He started having chest pains and we had to take him to the ER. He told the sweet little nurse, "My heart is broken." On the other side of my family, my grandma of 70 years buried my grandfather. She is completely lost with out him. She talks about him all the time and says she is so glad she had a long life with him. Real love does exist.
@kevinroyceho
@kevinroyceho 3 жыл бұрын
Of course real love exists. No one here is denying that... But you have to understand that not everyone is fortunate enough to actually be in a healthy relationship with safety, security, love and respect. And the fact of the matter is, so many human beings (mostly women) have had to endure abusive and traumatic relationships because they had no other choice. There’s nowhere else to go, no one else to support them and no other options for them. This is especially true for immigrant families. All this is another narrative that needs to be discussed and validated!

My grandparents were happily married for 65 years and they're always said their secret is that they were best friends and always acted as a team. For example, they ran a business together in the 50s as equal partners. At the time people would be say things about him 'letting' his wife be in charge of all the money, and he'd immediately admit to failing math and her being the brains of the marriage. I just wanted to mention this as the other side of things. Not every long marriage is an unwanted burden held on to for a lack of choice.

@@melmel7011 I'm not quite able to follow what you're saying. The question was: Why aren't modern day marriages lasting as long as they did back in the day?Though abuse, religious misunderstandings/fears, and financial inadequacy were common factors for some women and men staying married longer back in the day, where is the discussion in which we acknowledge that our generation and the selfish culture we've embraced and romanticized not adhere to basic moral principles such as exercising the beauty of discipline, forgiveness, accountability, and care? The conversation the ladies had was not geared toward establishing well-rounded explanations as to why marriages are failing at an all-time high. As I said before, though Loni did mention that not all longstanding marriages were abusive, the conversation, itself, created this narrative that the majority of marriages lasted longer than today because the women suffered more. They didn't add balance to the fact that people (husband and wives) these days don't even honor their marriage vows because at the root of every decision they make is selfishness and pride which cannot produce a healthy and joyous marriage.

My parents were together 29 years and married for 28 but i know that my mom was not happy for a lot of those years because she didn't feel loved in a way she felt like she deserved. It got to the point where she would meet up once a month with one of her girlfriend's husband cause she felt closer to him and could talk to him about stuff but not my dad. Then the girlfriend's husband passed away but she would still go to that same place once a month after he was gone and would talk with other friends about him. It actually started to become a rumor that my mom and this other man were having an affair even though nothing physical ever happened. I remember asking her once if she wasn't happy why she didn't try to leave my dad and her answer was that she didn't have any money and she didn't have a place to go which to this day i think about that moment a lot. When my mom was about to pass away she was able to let my dad know that she loved him and those would be the last words she would speak in this world cause she left not long after that moment

I love this conversation. I am just 23 and starting to realize the reality of this. You have to put up with some crap I order to stay together & my grandma always tells me “no hay dos glorias juntas” meaning “you can’t have everything in life” people admire marriages that have last 30+ years but like Adrian says it’s true. That’s the reality of things.. you have to balance the scale .... It’s all about constant forgiveness & sacrifice. That or probably stay alone forever. It’s hard to find someone that does not have deep baggage (alcoholism, drugs, sex addiction, porn addiction, verbal/physical abusive, extreme temper, extreme mental illness, can’t hold a job, marriage rape, shutting down and now communicating, workaholics, gamblers, money abuse, extreme jealousy, lazy husbands/no true coparenting, bad mother in law issues, pathological liars), constant social media indefinitely/emotional cheating) I could go in and on ...

Pretty obvious with marriage these days vs. the past: today we *choose* to marry for love vs. in the past we married for function...it's changes in societal expectations (including religion), function/benefit of marriage, and women's rights (ie. legal rights) to work and, furthermore, to choose to divorce. A more realistic view of this topic would be to compare women filing vs. men filing for divorce then vs. now.

Our grandmas didn't pretend that perfect was a possibility. They accepted their relationships, positive and negative. I never saw my grandparents relationship as anything other than perfectly happy. The truth is there was infidelity, and alcoholism, but they overcame their troubles and stayed together. Long marriages don't mean perfect, but they don't mean miserable either. Relationships are messy. We give up much too quickly on all relationships today compared to those before us.

My great-grandmother is from Indonesia, was married and had 2 kids. Her husband and daughter died in an accident because of the heavy rain. She went to the Netherlands by boat with her son (at that time Indonesia was a colony from the Netherlands). She got married to someone who lived in the Netherlands while she was on the boat (i.e. never seen this man before, no picture nothing, only a name). Unfortunately women weren't allowed to work or at least didn't make enough to support a family, so she had no choice but to marry someone she didn't know. When she and her son arrived in the Netherlands they found out he was horrible, abusive, a narcissist, anything bad you name it (there was a reason he wasn't yet married....). After knowing what she's been through and my grandfather (her son) has been through I made a promise to myself to NEVER settle for anything I don't deserve. We're blessed to live in a time where we can choose who we marry, we can choose we don't even want to get married. I'm so happy I'm a young adult in the 21st century.

One of the main reasons for me is that people now want to be in the "honeymoon phase" (aka "having butterflies") all the time. I would blame Hollywood and romantic books. When this phase ends, people have no idea what happened. Majority of divorces nowadays are no-fault divorces, reasons being "we grew apart", "don't know what happened", "I wanted more"... My parents are married for 45+ years (both were virgins on their wedding). Are they "in love"? Do they get butterflies? NO! Do they LOVE each other? Do they trust respect and trust each other? Are they faithful to each other? Are they giving their 100% to their marriage and family? YES!! This is marriage for me, more about trust commitment, compromise than adrenaline rush in your vains.

Lasting Love ------------ I think the difference between marriages now and marriages back then is that back then a lot of marriages both partners knew how to hold out and fight for when it’s worth it and keep pushing to stay loyal to somebody that they vowed under God that they would be married to this person through thick and thin and sickness and health... whereas now women are finding the courage to maintain their independence and now have more access to just bounce whereas women felt like they had to stay back then ! Zoom Baby Boom --------------- I mean I don’t really understand how being pregnant would affect you if you’re working from home anyway... I can understand the reasoning for not wanting to tell your boss but like I just find it crazy that we have women even pre Covid that would be nervous to tell their bosses they’re pregnant Deck the Halls ------------- I think it’s ok to decorate at least week before thanksgiving just because it sets the tone of the holidays being here!!! Ehh. Couples back then would cheat on each other ALL the time, if anything it was easier to cheat back then and NOT get caught. I think part of the reason for more marriages back then is because it was such a serious thing and divorce was very frowned upon, so couples would just stay in loveless even sexless marriages and keep their lovers on the side. The women didn’t leave because where was there to go? And the men, well it was cheaper to keep her.. I mean who’s gonna take care of the kids?

I hate how healthy marriages aren't being talked about or even highlighted. Could it be that when we take accountability for ourselves this generation takes it as being judgemental because you're forced to look at yourselves and be better? Or it's looked at as unachievable? Marriage is honorable and a spiritual commitment before God. You can still be independent financially and be committed to the marriage. I'm sorry to the youth that only see and hear this side of marriage that people continue to show. Pride, lack of self control, unforgiveness, not knowing your roles in the union has a lot to do with the discard of marriages today. Although some of what they're saying is true marriage was taken seriously then. Basically not producing the fruits of the spirit is why it fails.

I once heard someone say, “A man is as only as faithful as his options.” I’m not sure if I completely agree with it it really depends on the man himself though.
