I also didn’t appreciate the dramatization of something like this... people are not smiling when protesting , people aren’t cheering like this is a concert, people are not walking to the police giving them Pepsi’s... now if we look at the many examples of unity this past summer with Black Lives Matter and the many people who were attempting to just simply get the police to peacefully march with them and TRULY show we are all on the same team... people were on their knees , some were crying , other were angry , and many wer praying , lieutenants talked to the people to let them “ we stand with you “ , some were honoring George Floyd , policemen and citizens holding black lives matter signs and walking the citizens... now THAT is what this commercial needed to show! Not a glitz and glamorized version...

Honestly Pepsi wouldn’t have been dragged if they got rid of this commercial altogether and instead had people from all over send in instances of racism (blatant or subtle) that they’ve dealt with and showed videos of people to represent them with their quotes on the cans or a quote bubble next to them holding the can. I feel like the only one not offended by the commercial (as a woman of color) because I can understand that the commercial is not supposed to be a reflection of what is expected to go down in REAL LIFE. If you see a commercial with a talking goat with a Southern U.S. accent, you're not going to lose your mind and say it's wrong to associate goats with Southerners because you know that's not happening. Also, what gave away this protest being about racism? I really can't see it. I don't know. I feel like nowadays people choose to get offended so easily. Pepsi was lightheartedly trying to show that Pepsi can bring peace. It's exaggerated but it's a cute message.

Basically, even though the ad had people from different backgrounds, the ad is ultimately selling a product, in this case it’s a can of soda. The type of product that Pepsi is selling is so different and irrelevant from the issue of fighting for equal rights and protesting. The reason many people got offended is because the ad didn’t capture the spirit of protesting, it was like a hollow shell. It had all the essential “characters” such as protesters and police officers but it attributed ending racial tensions and resolving racism to soda. And for people who have personally experienced inequality and/or going to a protest, it’s so much more intense in real life, and it’s almost insulting to imply drinking soda will fix the serious issue of social/racial inequity. In my personal opinion, if they really wanted to incorporate the importance of protesting they should’ve just agreed to donate a certain amount of money from each purchase of Pepsi to BLM or another social justice oriented movement of their choice. Cause another problem people had with the ad is the ethical issue of trying to profit off of the spirit of protesting. Unless the corporation is actively advocating for these issues, what’s the real motive behind using the idea of protests to advertise a soda? The ad makes Pepsi appear to be trying to generate more revenue through the IMAGE of protesting rather than truly ADVOCATING for equal rights.
@LaFolleItalienne4 жыл бұрын
Also lived in Italy and now Belgium, but I think it has to do with the tension and police violence that’s present in the states. Especially in the huge protests that have been going on for so long.
